Just to keep everyone updated on the killings that happen in Chicago on a daily basis that the media does not talk about .

1st quarter
up 60 percent in the first three months of 2012

Totals
120 dead & 500 wounded

Latest shootings as of last night
Mother and one year daughter shot while sleeping. 1 year old in the head.

    wow ... i consider to toronto to be a similar sized market ... we had 45 homicides last year ... and our record is like 85 i think ... that's crazy ...

    in fairness to chicago, in 2010 they only ranked 18th in murder per capita for cities over 250,000

    if so, what is the problem?
    what is the solution?

    these questions aren't meant to bait ... just wondering why chicago has more homicides than toronto by such a large number despite being similar sized markets ...

    gang violence. If you can figure out how to crack that nut you will have done mankind a great service. My contention would be eliminate the pricey black market on drugs. Puts more parents back home, gets rid of much of the incentive to operate a street gang. who knows otherwise...there are simply pockets of gang culture that are more violent than others...interesting phenomenon...

    actually ... i hit a denny's in that area one time on the way back from a road trip ... interesting is probably the most diplomatic word ... :shock:

    i think gang violence is related to social infrastructure ... here in ontario ... we had minimal gang violence up until the conservatives started cutting all the social programs ... consequences were that after school programs for youth were cut ... single parents had to work more hours to make ends meet ...etc ... then we started putting money back into the social safety net and gang violence has subsided again ... although the police won't officially say it to be the case - many officers believe after school programs for youth and better community involvement has made a difference ...

    Yes, Chicago is in the top 3 or if not the top for gun violence in a major US city. Yet, Chicago has one the most strict guns laws in the country. You cannot even own a hand gun in the city of Chicago.

    There are two sides of the city (South & West sides) that 90% of the violence comes from. These areas have poverty and major gang violence.

    Solutions:
    it all starts at home. 72% of african American homes are fatherless. What comes from fatherless homes?
    * 63 percent of youth suicides are from fatherless homes
    * 90 percent of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes
    * 85 percent of all children who show behavior disorders come from fatherless homes
    * 80 percent of rapists with anger problems come from fatherless homes
    * 71 percent of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes
    * 75 percent of all adolescent patients in chemical-abuse centers come from fatherless homes
    * 85 percent of all youths in prison come from fatherless homes
    Everyone just goes through the motions that it is what it is. Some people will blame education & guns which do play a roll but where are the parents telling the kids that getting an education and not picking up a gun is the smart choice.
    No one likes to talk about it but it's the truth. The churches don't like to talk about it & the news doesn't mention it.

    The reason I started this thread was because of the Trayvon Martin story. The country is so into this story and wanting justice with a case that has many gray areas. People are getting killed daily in this city from babies to grown men but we as a nation just want to create a race story when this barley happens anymore. We could focus our energy on more important issues like early pregnancy, being a parent, educating people and taking responsibility as a community to not turn your cheek to these issues.
