Our place faces east, so we get these awe-inspiring sunrises and depending on the clouds, backsplash reflections of sundown on the buildings facing west toward us.

It's quite beautiful actually - these huge glass structures looking like deep-orange pillars.

Part of what I love about those moments is how fleeting they are. Makes me appreciate them that much more.

On occasion, I do seen Venus in the early morning. Great way to start the day, especially if the moon's visible and still hanging around.
    ...
Speaking of Sunrises... we are taking an April road trip to Phoenix to catch Eddie Vedder's gig and are planning it so we get to see a desert Sunrise. I love the sun rise in the desert.
Also... think about McCready's UFO gig at the Galaxy (see how it ties to the Universe topic?) Theater in Santa Ana. There are booths there that are first come first serve, if your back keeps you from standing.

Cos, I can't even sit IN a car for the time it'd take to drive there. But that's now; I hope then/later is better.

    The Phoenix trip sounds badass.

For some reason going back 67 years i've ALWAYS spelt it that way even I know better. To me it just looks kooler so I use it as my location on all my music sites. :D

Still beautiful though and out here in the country in S Fl the nights are dark but the skies always light up.

Wait - it IS Sombrero with two r's? And your location still spells it otherwise?

If so - and again - I fucking love that

Also, skies lighting up reminds me of the Van Halen song.

At sunset (the Sun setting in the Pacific, not the Boulevard), look westward. The bright 'star' is Venus, the lesser bright star, Jupiter.
With an average pair of binoculars, you can make out four of Jupiter's moons under moderately dark skies. I was doing some viewing last night, but the moonlight was causing problems.

Also, Mars can be seen in the early evening to the SW. It's hanging to the left of the full moon.

i use of light year is fantastic and mindboggling

    1 light year
    2

    3 light years
    4

like that... and very far and deep away

like an ant herd walking to the moon and back or something
maybe ants walking to the sun and back

    Space... the final frontier!

    Fascinating!

I also Like what Edward O. Wilson said about the other frontier: the minuscule. I don't have his statistics in front of me but he's pointed out that we've only identified a small percentage of the very tiny life forms on earth and have a lot to learn about them and from them.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

This is a picture taken from a spacecraft orbiting Mars of the new Mars Rover parachuting down to the surface. Pretty cool stuff! It's amazing what human ingenuity and $2.5B can do. :ugeek:

Now the two-year search for life begins ...

Side Note. M31 (Andromeda) is on a path to collide with the Milky Way, destroying both galaxies in the process. Don't worry, it won't happen until 4 billion years from now ... almost 2 billion years after Earth is inhabitable.

We watched an episode of Through the Wormhole this weekend, about parallel lives and deja vu, which spurred such a good conversation between my guy and me (we were either slightly or very high at the time  ).

It just gets the brain going. It feels so good - nutritious, almost - to think about these things that are beyond the regular courses of our consideration.

I also love how it puts the trivial in perspective, in its place.

    Never have yet, dammit.

I haven't had much success with meteor showers either, I either forget or it's cloudy here. I love "the wormhole" series, I haven't seen the one on parallel lives and deja vu! Must look that one up... thanks!
