no there isn't. i read the article. 2 were sexual assaults, 1 was just an attack. by all accounts they were unrelated. it is still the big city and just becos it's gentrified doesn't mean you should toss your common sense out the window.

oh fuck it, who am i kidding. you're all right.

i would like to publicly apologize for being a horrible sexist pig and for blaming victims of rape for their plight. i strongly encourage all young women to walk alone as much as they want after drinking as much as they can stomach. do not worry. if someone attacks you, it is not your fault and there was absolutely nothing you could have done to prevent it.

    enjoy chicago.

Gee who wants to vote for the biggest ASS on the board?

So a woman getting drunk gives a guy a right to attack her if she's alone in a city late at night?

    Loser!

you sexist bastard... you just assume a woman is helpless and needs your protection on her way home?

No, I also prefer any guy friends to take a cab if they are drunk. However, I personally prefer to date women, so that is who I am out drinking with the majority of time. I am sorry if you only hang out with dudes.

i read the article. it's "early this morning".... journalistic code for after the bars closed.
I have walked home from bars in my neighborhood while not drunk. It IS possible to spend an evening in a bar and not get trashed ... although if a woman is drunk, I don't see what that has to do with anything. I live in what sounds like a similar area .... it's urban, with a good bit of night life, but considered very safe. I've walked around it for over 30 years without incident, and if I found myself in a similar neighborhood in another city I might do the same, so I thought that the warning was helpful. I don't understand the hostility.

Lawguy, thanks for the heads up. I never drink, but I was planning to go see if I could hear the music from outside the Vic. (with my daughter) I still want to, but not sure we will.

You guys should be fine in front of the Vic, just make sure you cab it home or back to the hotel. the Vic is on a very busy intersection. Someone would have to be the worst criminal in the world to attck there. The attacks have been happening on the residential side streets for the most part.

I am more offended as a guy that you think there are so many of us out there assaulting women. Again, I prefer women to always have an escort or take a cab. But walking a few blocks at night is not such a horrible thing. Is it ok for a guy to walk home drunk? An armed robber could always come up behind you!!!!!!

he could and you'd lose your wallet. not quite as bad as getting sodomized by a stranger. it's a sad fact that the overwhelming majority of victims of sexual assault are women. in a big city, women should be careful. i wish it weren't the case, but it is.

jesus, when did the world become so pc it encourages rank stupidity?

My guess is between 1999 and 2003. At least, that's when the PC legions started taking over in my area.

if you are a woman and make a habit of wandering around big cities late at night alone while drunk, you're a fucking idiot.

Just so you know, one of the girls got out of the cab, and between her walk from the cab to her apt, she was attacked. So, she's not a fucking idiot as you say.

This one happened about 1/4 mile from my apt, and not in a million years would I think this would happen.

the hostility comes from me offering a bit of regular, albeit blunt, common sense and instantly being accused of saying women deserve to be raped.

You could very easily be sodomized by an armed robber.

Yes, woman are the majority of victims. But how often do sexual assualts happen in that neighborhood? And how often are sexual assaults random and not a date rape type occurance? I am sorry, but they do not just roll up the sidewalks at dark. Just because someone walks home from a bar does not mean they are drunk, nor does it mean they are being stupid. You can be as careful as hell and still be a vicitm of crime.

i knew before junior high that i shouldnt walk in big cities alone at night and i should always keep a careful eye on my surroundings. this isn't quantum physics.

I am sorry you got mugged twice. I am even more sorry that you feel that you can't venture out in to the world past a certain point. That is a shitty outlook on life and humanity. But that works for you. I have been mugged once, but I still go out. I dont think I am inviting muggers just because I choose to be out.

What do you do in the winter when it gets dark at like 4pm. Do you have to be home by that point?

know your environment and act accordingly. it's common sense.

I couldn't agree more. That's exactly why lawguy was giving out a friendly warning to the people that do not know the enviroment. It's really not that hard to understand.

your point is taken, but this is great advice in any city.
yes, there's some sicko out in that area right now...and your warning is heeded. that said, people will do what they want.

you can't beat into people's head that there's a danger if they don't care.

just let it go. it was very informative and i'm sure appreciated by many.

those who dis this b/c it's chicago. it's simply an informational thread. just be careful...wherever you are.

i go out at dark plenty. i quit drinking for other reasons. but when i go out i travel in groups and if that is not possible i take cabs/busses and always keep a careful eye on my surroundings. i venture out plenty. and i wander plenty. im also ready to fight if need be, or to hand over my wallet if need be. if i was a girl, id carry a can of mace and have my hand on it the whole way home. lone women are the top target of criminals.

i dont worry about the winter. any mugger would freeze to death waiting for you to walk by.
