We have seen Pearl Jam 7 times, including the two Toronto shows, and then a week later we saw the Foo Fighters show in Pittsburgh.
What a difference!!!
We love PJ, but the Foos are much better live, and they play with a lot of fire and intensity (something that is badly lacking with PJ since 1994.)
We also saw Soundgarden in 2011 up in Toronto opening night, and that too was an eye opener; they bring the fire and the brimstone so to speak.
I deem the quality of the setlist more important the quantity of it, and the Foo Fighters took that to another level on the Wasting Light tour.
We intend on going to more Foo Fighters shows as well as the PJ and Soundgarden shows.
Hey I was at that Foo Fighter Show!!!
It was a fun Friday night. And the week before up in Toronto for the two nights of PJ were a blast as well.
We got a good dose of geeat concerts in September!!!!8/25/98 - Pittsburgh

wow, i think dave grohl is the complete opposite of a self absorbed person. he's often refered to as the nicest guy in rock. and from what ive gathered about him, seeing him and knowing of him since the early 90's, he seems a down to earth guy, nice and kind, and someone who has a wicked sense of humor.
I get the sense he takes a lighthearted approach to his life. and i think he'd say he may not be the best drummer or lead singer, and that the foos may not be the best band ever, and i think that takes guts to say that.
when i think of self absorbed the person that doesnt come to mind would be dave grohl.
ive never heard one bad story about the guy. im sure he's had a few bad encounters with fans. maybe when eating dinner with his wife and kids and someone came up to him maybe he'd feel angry or defensive, but i can see fans coming up to him in general and grohl being appreciate, funny and quite nice.0 -

I find his approach to the music industry as a breath of fresh air. Dave's transparency is one of the more unique qualities about him. Example, while recording Wasting Light, his little girl tapped him on the shoulder because she wanted to play in the pool. Dave went out swimming with his daughter while they were in the middle of recording. Priceless....
The Foo Fighters are not the greatest band out there, but they are an example of a band that has paid its dues over the years. They bring an intangible live in concert that I haven't seen in in a good while.
We have added them on our list of bands to see as often as possible.8/25/98 - Pittsburgh

Before I dig in, I loved his speech. I also think Dave is awesome. That was cool he went up there and said what needed to be said. He's the man. Now, on to bitching...ckoke wrote:EquallyWorthless wrote:Lifted wrote:could he be any more self-absorbed?
Agreed.
That being said. Even though Foo Fighters hasn't written a decent song in about 10 years, I respect the fuck out of a lot of what he is saying.
Agree to disagree with you on that one.
Just compare Wasting Light to Backspacer or the Avacado album; it's not even close.
Wasting Light blows those albums out of the water. I really hate to say that.
Nonsense. And I'm not saying that as the typical PJ drone, you'd see here. Backspacer is a fantastic album. Just because it didn't win a Grammy, doesn't mean it wasn't better than a Grammy winning album, unless we're sheep. The truth is Backspacer was better than Wasting Light. But, let's dig deeper..
Here's the deal, if you like rhythm sections, you'll prefer Foo Fighters to PJ pretty much every time. Why? Well, their songs are written by a drummer, with a great drummer at the helm. Pop fans like rhythm sections and songs based around them, hence the sheep-like love for the Foos. Things with their tunes are based on that section. Which is fun, no doubt. They do a great job of lifting songs. But, if you like lyrics... um... the dude's horrible. If you like complexity within songs, Dave dives. I love Foos, but they are just not PJ.
So, if you like good lyrics, simple riffs or melodies... you'll prefer PJ.
PJ smokes Foo Fighter in lyrics every single time. In my humble opinion Ed's voice is 10 times better than Daves too (but I understand where some may disagree). Moreover, PJ can go slow much better than the Foos (although Foos can go faster arguably better). See Just Breathe or The End, or in the past - Release, Off He Goes, Present Tense, etc. Eddie is simply a better solo artist than Dave, and each band is based on the former. I think the argument could go, that Dave is simply a better band member than Ed, and that's a good argument. Finally, PJ guitarist smoke Foo guitarists. Compare McCready to Pat Smear... seriously, try. The area where Foos are better, which I mentioned before, is the Pop arena. So, songs like The Fixer (PJ's attempt) are not quite as catchy as Foos Pop. Fair enough, but I'd take songs like Unthought Known or The End over anything the Foos can do. All in all, I favor PJ.
At the end of the day, I see that the two bands are that are both great. But, to say Wasting Light... which by the way is IMHO a shit album (praised because all other "pop" rock is shit), is better than Backspacer or Avacado... come on. You sound like a Grammy Muppet. Yeh, I said it.

Wasting Light is just a pitiful load of garbage. Backspacer and Self Titled are great albums.0 -

It is possible to like both bands. PJ and Foo Fighters are really very different type of bands and not really open to the type of comparisons you are making. And to me, Wasting Light is a hundred times better than Backspacer. I like Avocado, but Wasting Light is still slightly better.0 -
You can make comparisons between the two... but they differ quite a bit in style. With this said... and as a long time fan of both (aren't we all?):
Wasting Light= 4 stars
Self-Titled (Avocado)= 3 and 1/2 stars
Backspacer= 2 stars

There are skills involved in making music that are real and they exist in some human beings. When people rely on computers to make up for their lack of skill, they don't actually HAVE these skills. :?

Wait, what?
Seen the movie 'Midnight in Paris'? Its in our nature to just accept that the era that came before us, or an era considered the golden age is always better then what we are witnessing now. However, we will never really know, until we look back on the era we are witnessing now, and compare. It's a very romantic idea.{if (work != 0) {

In some ways I agree, and in some I don't. As I've stated already, I do like both bands.
I also agree they are different types of bands. But, if you're permitted to judge which album is better, I'm permitted to make comparisons of the two bands. I don't get the "not really open to the type of comparisons you're making" quote.
I think my comparisons were pretty accurate. One band is developed from rhythm section out. The other is developed from vocalist/guitarist in. Two different approaches. Both work. I prefer the latter, but still admire the former.
Oh and Backspacer is more diverse and just plain better than Wasting Light IMHO. Regardless of our differences of opinion there, can you name one stand-out lyrical song from Dave? Just one and post the lyrics? Thanks. Here's a new demo called "in the fire":

kind of interesting how wildly different peoples views on foo fighters. i know on this board many people, and in general, it was a major label album that got alot of attention and praise by fans and critics, im tlaking about wasting light. and then you have others on here who feel its a terrible album.0

I think Learning to Fly qualifies as a stand-out lyrical song:
Run and tell all of the angels, this could take all night
Think I need a devil to help me get things right
Hook me up a new revolution ‘cause this one is a lie
We sat around laughin’ and watched the last one die
Yeah, I’m lookin’ to the sky to save me
Lookin’ for a sign of life
Lookin’ for something to help me burn out bright
I’m lookin’ for a complication
Lookin’ ‘cause I’m tired of lyin’
Make my way back home when I learn to fly high
I think I’m dyin' nursing patience
It can wait one night
I’d give it all away if you give me one last try
We’ll live happily ever trapped if you just save my life
Run and tell the angels that everything’s alright
I’m lookin’ to the sky to save me
Lookin’ for a sign of life
Lookin’ for somethin’ to help me burn out bright
I’m lookin’ for a complication
Lookin’ ‘cause I’m tired of tryin’
Make my way back home when I learn to fly high
Make my way back home when I learn to…
Fly along with me, I can’t quite make it alone
Try to make this life my own
Fly along with me, I can’t quite make it alone
Try to make this life my own
I’m lookin’ to the sky to save me
Lookin’ for a sign of life
Lookin’ for somethin’ to help me burn out bright
I’m lookin’ for a complication
Lookin’ ‘cause I’m tired of tryin’
Make my way back home when I learn to…
I’m lookin’ to the sky to save me
Lookin’ for a sign of life
Lookin’ for something to help me burn out bright
I’m lookin’ for a complication
Lookin’ ‘cause I’m tired of tryin’
Make my way back home when I learn to fly
Make my way back home when I learn to fly
Make my way back home when I learn to…

im not really sure lyrics is their bag.
nonetheless, My Hero is a damn good song lyrically and musicially. Everlong is talked about often because its a damn good song. I'll Stick around is amazing.0 -
Foo Fighters were great...15 years ago. Though I agree with everything Dave said, their performance that night was terrible at best. Of course he's gonna get criticized for the things he said...he was at the fucking Grammys! How many of those in attendance that night even know what analog is?"FF, I've heard the droning about the Sawx being the baby dolls. Yeah, I get it, you guys invented baseball and suffered forever. I get it." -JearlPam09250

while i think dave is completely right on, and i think he's a great guy, its interesting he made the statement he did, when he did. i'd say in general music right now and for the last few years has all been about analog recording. Hell Adele's 21, the biggest selling album in years i dont think is analog, but its won just about every award in the industry and is all about adeles voice. no tricks, not even much music behind the voice. its just her voice.
and the music i love to preach about on here is all about analog as well. Hell the other big success story other than adele at the grammys was Bon Iver who knows analog like the back of his hand.
Indie music, and then the publics appetitie for indie has all been about this. Avett Bros, Fleet Foxes, Iron and wine, Josh Radin, william fitzsimmons, and so on are all hushed vocal sounds that sounds like they were recorded in some bedroom.
so while i agree with dave grohl, i think we have already seen a shift away from processed commercial sounds, the grammy awards proved that, adele won so did bon iver.0 -
there always going to be processed music, commercial music made to cause people to consume.
but i'd say music in general right now is pretty vital and alive.
its almost like dave made this speech 5 years too late or something0 -

I took your comparisons to seem like you were comparing two bands of the same style. Like say PJ and Soundgarden or other grunge bands of the 90s. FF are a pop-style band and PJ is not (except for maybe The Fixer).
There are several songs I think are lyrical standouts of the FF:
Walk
Stacked Actors
I Should Have Known
Stranger Things Have happened
Let It Die0 -
Both bands are amazing in their own unique ways, and Wasting Light and Backspacer are two of the best rock n' roll albums I've heard in a while. Both of these bands rock harder than most bands half their age, and they both put on great live shows. Neither one is better than the other, and trying to argue about it is stupid and pointless.
Wasting Light: 5 stars.
Backspacer: 5 stars.
End of story."I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."
