kind of interesting how wildly different peoples views on foo fighters. i know on this board many people, and in general, it was a major label album that got alot of attention and praise by fans and critics, im tlaking about wasting light. and then you have others on here who feel its a terrible album.
It is possible to like both bands. PJ and Foo Fighters are really very different type of bands and not really open to the type of comparisons you are making. And to me, Wasting Light is a hundred times better than Backspacer. I like Avocado, but Wasting Light is still slightly better.
In some ways I agree, and in some I don't. As I've stated already, I do like both bands.
I also agree they are different types of bands. But, if you're permitted to judge which album is better, I'm permitted to make comparisons of the two bands. I don't get the "not really open to the type of comparisons you're making" quote.
I think my comparisons were pretty accurate. One band is developed from rhythm section out. The other is developed from vocalist/guitarist in. Two different approaches. Both work. I prefer the latter, but still admire the former.
Oh and Backspacer is more diverse and just plain better than Wasting Light IMHO. Regardless of our differences of opinion there, can you name one stand-out lyrical song from Dave? Just one and post the lyrics? Thanks.
I think Learning to Fly qualifies as a stand-out lyrical song:
Run and tell all of the angels, this could take all night
Think I need a devil to help me get things right
Hook me up a new revolution ‘cause this one is a lie
We sat around laughin’ and watched the last one die
Yeah, I’m lookin’ to the sky to save me
Lookin’ for a sign of life
Lookin’ for something to help me burn out bright
I’m lookin’ for a complication
Lookin’ ‘cause I’m tired of lyin’
Make my way back home when I learn to fly high
I think I’m dyin' nursing patience
It can wait one night
I’d give it all away if you give me one last try
We’ll live happily ever trapped if you just save my life
Run and tell the angels that everything’s alright
I’m lookin’ to the sky to save me
Lookin’ for a sign of life
Lookin’ for somethin’ to help me burn out bright
I’m lookin’ for a complication
Lookin’ ‘cause I’m tired of tryin’
Make my way back home when I learn to fly high
Make my way back home when I learn to…
Fly along with me, I can’t quite make it alone
Try to make this life my own
Fly along with me, I can’t quite make it alone
Try to make this life my own
I’m lookin’ to the sky to save me
Lookin’ for a sign of life
Lookin’ for somethin’ to help me burn out bright
I’m lookin’ for a complication
Lookin’ ‘cause I’m tired of tryin’
Make my way back home when I learn to…
I’m lookin’ to the sky to save me
Lookin’ for a sign of life
Lookin’ for something to help me burn out bright
I’m lookin’ for a complication
Lookin’ ‘cause I’m tired of tryin’
Make my way back home when I learn to fly
Make my way back home when I learn to fly
Make my way back home when I learn to…

nonetheless, My Hero is a damn good song lyrically and musicially. Everlong is talked about often because its a damn good song. I'll Stick around is amazing.
Foo Fighters were great...15 years ago. Though I agree with everything Dave said, their performance that night was terrible at best. Of course he's gonna get criticized for the things he said...he was at the fucking Grammys! How many of those in attendance that night even know what analog is?
"FF, I've heard the droning about the Sawx being the baby dolls. Yeah, I get it, you guys invented baseball and suffered forever. I get it." -JearlPam0925

while i think dave is completely right on, and i think he's a great guy, its interesting he made the statement he did, when he did. i'd say in general music right now and for the last few years has all been about analog recording. Hell Adele's 21, the biggest selling album in years i dont think is analog, but its won just about every award in the industry and is all about adeles voice. no tricks, not even much music behind the voice. its just her voice.
and the music i love to preach about on here is all about analog as well. Hell the other big success story other than adele at the grammys was Bon Iver who knows analog like the back of his hand.
Indie music, and then the publics appetitie for indie has all been about this. Avett Bros, Fleet Foxes, Iron and wine, Josh Radin, william fitzsimmons, and so on are all hushed vocal sounds that sounds like they were recorded in some bedroom.
so while i agree with dave grohl, i think we have already seen a shift away from processed commercial sounds, the grammy awards proved that, adele won so did bon iver.

I took your comparisons to seem like you were comparing two bands of the same style. Like say PJ and Soundgarden or other grunge bands of the 90s. FF are a pop-style band and PJ is not (except for maybe The Fixer).
There are several songs I think are lyrical standouts of the FF:
Walk
Stacked Actors
I Should Have Known
Stranger Things Have happened
Let It Die
Both bands are amazing in their own unique ways, and Wasting Light and Backspacer are two of the best rock n' roll albums I've heard in a while. Both of these bands rock harder than most bands half their age, and they both put on great live shows. Neither one is better than the other, and trying to argue about it is stupid and pointless.
Wasting Light: 5 stars.
Backspacer: 5 stars.
End of story.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

its almost like dave made this speech 5 years too late or something
