I didn't even know that there was any backlash :? Although I don't think it was necessary to clarify I do appreciate that it was somewhat humorous.

Opinions on this?

    Why did he have to explain his speech? He didn't say anything wrong to begin with!

    I think he felt people felt he was taking a shot at all the computerized musical acts that really can't sing unless that have auto tunes and stuff, which I think he really was and to which I really agree.

    Well, I think he has a point when he suggests that people who rely on autotune are not really musicians.
    There are skills involved in making music that are real and they exist in some human beings. When people rely on computers to make up for their lack of skill, they don't actually HAVE these skills. :?

    I hate that he has to apologize for being honest!!!!

    It's pretty simple, if you play instruments and really sing and play live, not to a taped track and you actually play instruments and really sing when you record, you are a musician. If you play live to recorded tracks in the background and record music in the studio with a pre recorded track on a computer like that DUMB ASS show Lets Make a Hit with Jewel, then you are not.

    I try to explain this to my daughter, these people are entertainers, but NOT musicians, I'm glad someone FINALLY had the freaking guts to call out these people in front of the whole industry, we don't need more American Idol crap, it's just BAD. If people chose to listen to this stuff fine, just don't call the people who make this garbage "musicians" because they aren't.

    Like the guy in my avatar picture, he was a musician.....

  • I might be wrong but I think he is also talking about the disadvantages of digital recording and how a lot has become quite sterile. It is easy to make rhythm and bass lines perfect in respect to timing. I think I saw a quote from Flea that said something along the line.....with digital you may say, "that's a nice bass line," but with analog you may say, " that bass line has a nice feel to it." I also doubt the Foo Fighters use 2 inch tape.... but maybe. :D
  • I enjoyed the speech, but why did the Foo Fighters perform with deadmau5 after bashing his type of music? A bit hypercritical?

    I wouldn't read too much into that. This wasn't a compromise of values. It was merely a performance demanded by the evening- stepping out of character for the enjoyment of those that wanted to enjoy it. No big deal. Guys such as these can't be asses all the time. I think he would have looked arrogant by snubbing his nose at the performance when it was done for fun and entertainment.

    Grohl's answered the call when needed to. Look at the recent KC Westboro Church incident for proof of this. He's authentic. He has the respect of his peers. They would know better than us.

    This question is precisely the reason he had to issue the statement online this week. People thought it was hypocritical of him to bash "computer music" and perform alongside Deadmau5, so he was clarifying that he doesn't mind people in the electronica world who use computers, samples, turntables, etc. in a "rock'n'roll" kind of way to make something new and exciting, but that he objects to the use of tools like Autotune and ProTools to fix imperfections and take the spontaneity out of music and to make a homogenized pop-music product.

    And yes, Wasting Light was recorded directly to analog tape. There is a lot about this in the Foo Fighters: Back & Forth documentary. So he wasn't talking out of his ass with the "2-inch tape" quote.

    If you look at the whole quote he kinda was. He said "we didn't go down the street to the best studio in the world.....". They did record the album in analog, but he made it sound like they set up a tape machine and a mixing board and recorded the tunes. The reality was he made a world class studio in his garage.

    As far as the use of protools and making "perfect" recordings.....I think there is some validity to that approach, but it too often gets used as a crutch when we're talking about rock music. I think the sterility comes more into play in the creative process. A Nickelback song recorded to tape with some rough edges is still a Nickelback song. Bands like Tool and Radiohead seem to really seem to try to perfect everything in their recordings, where everything is really slick, yet they still maintain alot of that human touch.

    could he be any more self-absorbed?

    Agreed.

    That being said. Even though Foo Fighters hasn't written a decent song in about 10 years, I respect the fuck out of a lot of what he is saying.

    work = work +1;
    }system("pause");

    Agree to disagree with you on that one.

    Just compare Wasting Light to Backspacer or the Avacado album; it's not even close.

    Wasting Light blows those albums out of the water. I really hate to say that.

    Got to agree as well. Wasting Light blows not only those 2 albums away but many over the last decade by PJ. I've seen PJ 17 times and the Foos now 4 times. And have to say this... While their setlist doesn't change even close to what PJ's does, on show alone and performance, they Foos smoke PJ live. Never thought I'd ever say that, but yeah.....

    :?

    We have seen Pearl Jam 7 times, including the two Toronto shows, and then a week later we saw the Foo Fighters show in Pittsburgh.

    What a difference!!!

    We love PJ, but the Foos are much better live, and they play with a lot of fire and intensity (something that is badly lacking with PJ since 1994.)

    We also saw Soundgarden in 2011 up in Toronto opening night, and that too was an eye opener; they bring the fire and the brimstone so to speak.

    I deem the quality of the setlist more important the quantity of it, and the Foo Fighters took that to another level on the Wasting Light tour.

    We intend on going to more Foo Fighters shows as well as the PJ and Soundgarden shows.
