I was a paying member and tried to log on 15 mins ago to upload some holiday pics for friends...no explanation of what happened, no notice given, nothing...seems to be widespread. Looks to me like "US officials" are trying to gain a monopoly on internet content. If this continues it could mean a major assault on freedom of speech and information on the net but I suppose this was always a possibility. Reminds me of public broadcasting (tv and radio) selling out to advertising and becoming something else. Other thoughts?

Good to see the US government doesn't have any other problems it could work on ridding the world of.

That's my fucking beef with all of this bullshit. Not everything on there is illegal. You simply wanted to upload pictures for friends to see.

As per usual American officials being too big for their boots and trying to police the internet. They'll fail because when one door shuts another always opens. I've downloaded loads of stuff from Megaupload and it's all been legal. New Zealand authorities when asked to arrest these guys should have said "NO". Hope fully Megaupload will sue the pants off the US authorities for this.

If a grocery store is also selling cocaine...don't they close the whole store down?

Not if it's one of their customers selling it.
megaupload doesn't upload it's own content for public consumption. It's basically a bigass ftp site. And there are already a LOT of sites like it operating. This grandstanding, making an example, is a joke.

Right, people should be able to steal, huh?

in reality this situation is very complicated. There is a fine line to doing nothing and doing what they did, so I understand the frustration.

Did I say that? No...I poked a hole in your weak analogy. I understand that it's complicated...but I don't really understand the fine line you're talking about? Do or do not....pretty black and white to me. ;)
Should government be allowed to confiscate your legally obtained property, when you haven't broken any laws, because of a crime completely unrelated to you?
