    Sorry I somehow upset you.
No need to act that way. I cannot be bothered wasting my time on you if you are going to be like that.

Dude, seriously? I thought I just buried the hatchet. You didn't upset me at all. I was just nitpicking and already apologized for it. Anyway, rock on and have a good holiday, brother. It's no sweat. Peace

  • Not always. My daughter is very respectful and isn't interested in rebelling yet. She is 11, so maybe that will come later. But when she gets older she can be exposed to more. Honestly she isn't really interested in adult things. She likes being a kid.

I drive a school bus...I drive...with children...do you realize how hard it is to censor myself?? ;) Not in my head Baby!! After 20 years, I have heard it all...10 year old, "Hey, fucker, gimme that back!"..."My Mom said your a little fuckin asshole!" :o ...6 year old, "Your a c@*ksucker", another 6 year old, "Whatsa a c@*ksucker?"..."OHHHH Kelly, he said c@*ksucker!!" .. Sorry parents, your kids swear. As bus drivers, we are in the realm of neutrality for kids, we aren't their teachers, we aren't their parents, we are the cool ones, we become almost invisible sometimes & kids act totally different than at school or home. I actually gave the F word up for awhile...but then I thought fuck that, I neeeeed the emphasis & yes, more than a few of my high school kids have been privvy....oooopsie...for the most part I'm pretty patient... considering.
So Ed, carry on like ya mean it...

Not in a song but nonetheless funny... ;)

  • My nearly 3yr old daughter was on the couch next to me listening to Buenos Aires, and during Blood, Ed sang 'one of my fuckin' enemies' and i knew it was possibly coming, and i hoped it wouldn't... but sure enough, it was there... and i cringed when he did it....

I'm not trying to be a dick AT ALL but I read this and had to check the lyrics to make sure I wasn't mishearing it all these years. Its actually "I know you'll be a star." Like I said, not trying to be a jerk, I just read this and got concerned that I had been flubbing a lyric all these years! :)

As far as the swearing goes, it doesn't bother me, but then again I don't have kids. I have cats. They don't seem to mind.

    This is an interesting thread...

I'm afraid my 2 cents are in favour of 'Team Rock and Roll'...I feel it would be unrealistic for adult artists to censor themselves in case children are listening.

Has anyone ever listened to the Salt Lake 09-28-2009 boot? They definitely toned the swearing down and at one point Ed apologizes to the kids in the audience. A very unique concert.

    aaah me too :) haha
    but really, I love it.

I think it just intensifies the moment, right there and then. I mean, the band don't NEED Eddie to swear - he doesn't need to do it, to prove his passion or energy, but when he does, it's great. No big deal. It adds to that live feel - of things happening, right there and then. No censorship, just freedom to do and say exactly what he feels. For the moment and by the moment, in his words (paraphrased, I think... correct me if I'm wrong)

I swear a bit more than I should , but in my opinion, if it isn't aimed at someone in a malicious and nasty way or if it isn't about someone directly, there isn't a problem - so Eddie adding a "fuck" every now and then, isn't a big deal. That's just how I see it. I like it whenever he does it - even in songs like "Present Tense".

A child will hear swear words one way or another but it doesn't mean they'll start swearing. By placing such a huge emphasis on it, it adds to the appeal or it takes presidence over other equally important things - like other manners of conduct (physical actions + ways of speaking) that are just as "bad".

Eddie shouldn't have to censor himself at a show - I understand the concern for younger children but if you are that worried about language, I don't see how taking a child to a concert keeps with that discipline. There are worse things than swear words at shows.

Songwise - I personally don't think it detracts either. It adds to the songs for me. Not a huge impact (depending on which song of course) but it does add to it. Of course, I don't find casual swear words a big deal or offensice - except when they are used in a mean way and with the intention of harming someone or speaking negatively about someone, so that affects my whole argument.
  • Why can't you fucking people understand that cursing fucking pisses me off???!?

One more fucking curse word and i'll lose my fucking shit.

I have 3 little ones and a fourth on the way. I do try to filter out the bad words to set a good example. I know my 8 year old is up on lots of swear words courtesy of other kids in school, but that doesn't mean i'm going to open the flood gates and give him permission to start dropping F bombs. I've always told my kids they can ask me about the meaning of any word - even the naughty ones. We just had an open discussion about the phrase "fuck you" after he saw it written on the school bus seat. I laid it out for him and told him it was not appropriate or polite to say. I know he will probably let it fly when alone with his friends, but at least i'm not going to send him the message that i condone it.

I think that we here, hear more than most as far as the lyrics! Kids, probably do hear duck not fuck! lol Remember the saw things thread about RVM came out sofies or something like that?
Ed isn't always the clearest in his enunciations, but we have learned over the years!
As someone else said, it's rock, so ok with me! As to the live performances, I love it that he just goes with what he feels at the moment. But, as an example Present Tense, or some other slower songs mentioned, had they included fuck in the original studio lyrics, maybe not so much! :)
"I'd rather be with an animal." "Those that can be trusted can change their mind." "The in between is mine." "If I don't lose control, explore and not explode, a preternatural other plane with the power to maintain." "Yeh this is living." "Life is what you make it."
