What a ridiculous thread. I adore Pearl Jam, and I think they're one of the greatest bands ever. But nobody can touch what the Beatles, the Stones (or Zeppelin for that matter) did in their heydey. Those bands changed music forever. Pearl Jam were merely part of a larger movement of bands that ushered in a brief shift in musical tastes, and the mainstream jumped on board. I give them credit for being the last remaining survivor of that era, but other than hardcore Pearl Jam nerds and knowledgeable music connoisseurs, I'd argue that the average mainstream music listener probably isn't even aware that Pearl Jam still exists.

Pearl Jam might be better than "The Beetles", but no way in hell they are better than The Beatles.

Sorry, I love both bands. I am a way bigger fan of PJ than I ever was for The Beatles.
But, the fact is The Beatles were MUCH better innovators, song writers, risk takers, trend setters... the list goes on.

Oh, and their 6 year career as a band has lasted 47+ years now.

whats with all the "pointless thread" posts?
    - since when does any post have a point? and anyway who said a post had to have a point?
dont read it if it's considered too pointless for you.
AND finally - to use the argument, "pj wouldnt be here today if it weren't for blablabla" PLEASE - REALLY? thats confirmed is it? Did eddie and mike call you today and say - "o yeah by the way, i wouldnt have any talent if ringo fucking star wasn't born - and further, when i wrote black i was listening to satisfaction by the stones, and wondered how I could make the two sound similar without making it obvious..."
while we're at it, lets say that no bands would be here today (including the beatles) if it weren't for that guy in china thousands of years who tightened a bit of string around his tooth and his mums tooth and said "hey mum listen to this" and plucked the string thus generating vibration.
    yeah... that just happened too

The other is a pop culture magazine.

    The comparison is stupid.

yeah i get it - i spelt their names wrong, thing is, i don't really care - get over it

the comparison is stupid?... yeah well done
  • The Beatles were so influential. They gave us a lot of really good music in a very small amount of time. Sometimes releasing two albums a year...
  • What a lame-ass remark!
George Harrison is a poor man's Stone Gossard.

to all that believe PJ is better then the beatles or the rollingstones; we'll see how far eddies' smoking and wine can carry him/them.

Plus dont forget about pink floyd and the kinks, that which PJ could never top in creativity.

They're better than the beetles. I've never heard anything by them.

The Beatles on the other hand...

For a moment you had me scratching my head, I was like really? Never heard anything?

    :lol::lol::lol:

Music is subjective. So these kinds of statements are somewhat pointless to me. I did not grow up with the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, but I do love songs by both of them (and I also dislike some of their songs). I prefer the Beatles over the Stones.

In terms of being influential, and changing the music scene, I think The Beatles and The Rolling Stones beat Pearl Jam - easily.

What do I like better? Pearl Jam, no contest. But that is another story.

In my book there's a few bands/artists that are virtually untouchable just from their impact on other artists alone....Beatles, Zeppelin, Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, Dylan, Hendrix and Black Sabbath. Take the influence card out and you're still lookin at some monumental bodies of work that stretched the boundaries of what people thought were possible with rock music.

I regard PJ at what some would say is a foolishly high level, but it's a pretty hard argument to put them above or even among the very best.

I agree with this- although I place Dylan, Hendrix, and Sabbath on the next tier below the first five bands listed.

Obviously some will place their favourite band(s) above these types on sentimentality and personal value... and this is good. OP... fair enough- however as much as I love Pearl Jam and have frequently called them the 'Rolling Stones of our era'... it's a bit of a stretch for me to place them above the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, the Who, and my all time favourites- Pink Floyd.

Look at the recent Wall tour by Roger Waters and the massive turnouts and multiple shows throughout the planet. Waters is even doing a rerun (I'm seeing it again in Vancouver). PJ will never be able to pull off such an event at the magnitude we have witnessed Waters do this at. The reason... universal appreciation and love of an absolute epic album from one of history's most unique and outstanding bands. Timeless music.

Point of view can always be debated in friendly fashion and opinions should always be honored. Knowing what you are talking about helps.....beetles do not play the best music (in my opinion) The Beatles, on the other hand, were fantastic!!!

Well the Beatles & Stones were influenced by Elvis, the King of Rock & Roll.

  • GAH.

BeAtles. it's spelled with an 'a', folks.

Really. If you don't even know how to spell their name, you have no business judging their music...because clearly you have not spent enough time learning even the slightest thing about them, or their place in rock history.

As to the topic...PJ is my favorite band...but The Beatles changed the universe. Gotta give 'em forever props for that.

Art isn't a contest.. every artist isn't playing by a set of rules.. Like sports

Every artist is playing there own sport

It is like asking "Who is better, Steve Yzerman or Barry Sanders?"

While they are both great, it is impossible to compare the two, because they are playing different sports..

  • The Rolling Stones are now heading towards their 50th year.
I love it when a band comes along who are very middle of the road e.g. Boy And Bear from Australia. Critics rave about them & they can do know wrong. Lets see where they are in 5 tears time?
Bands like The Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam have stood the test of time & not had to reinvent themselves.

 PJ can only dream about being 1/10th as good and influential as The Beatles. I know this is a PJ forum but come on...its the freaking Beatles. Harrison, Lennon, and McCartney are three of the best singer/songwriter ever.

Oh and FYI, I'm 24 and The Beatles are my #1 band.

even mick jagger said that nobody played over an hour until zeppelin started doing 2-3 1/2 hours. i love all the classic stuff. you should listen to i've got a feeling. pj paid tribute to the beatles on their first release ever....also sheck out you've got to hide your love away by ed, little sister by pj & robert plant. or more recently, mother. i'm sure i am forgetting some, but give respect where it is due. without the past we wouldn't have what we do now...

I'm not even going to attempt to explain why I think Lukes comments are misguided, I don't think anything we say will change his mind, and that he's as entitled to his opinion as we are to ours. I would ask him to check out any of The Stones albums between '69 and '73 though ( esp 'Exile On Main St' and 'Sticky Fingers') and The Beatles White Album.

I'd also like to sat that it's nice to see someone who is passionate about their music, although I feel he should check out the history behind it.

4 of the best records ever..
    1.beggars banquet
    2.let it bleed
    3.sticky fingers
    4.exile on main st.
the stones were damn near untouchable during this era..i got the white album when no code came out. similar records, somewhat. both bands were in huge transition periods of their career. pj was stepping back & becoming more introspectrive & the beatles were literally fracturing. the emotional kalidescope on both bands albums were enormous. i was going through a pretty tough time and i grew with help from both. dear prudence, won't you come out to play....
