Agreed. Not surprising, it's my favorite song of all-time.
It's my favorite Beatles song. I have to be in the right mind frame to listen to The Beatles. It usually involves me working on art, studying, or a slow paced run.
This talk has made me put on Rubber Soul right now though.

Right on. I put on Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band the other night. Don't listen to the fab four as much as I used to.
Same here. I listened to them all the time when I was a kid. I don't listen to them as much but I still love them and they're still my absolute favorite.

There are times when I go on my Beatles fix and will listen to the whole discography from the beginning.

I'm sick of everybody mentioning these two bands when it comes to 'greatest band ever' arguments. I get it, the beetles wrote let it be and shit- so what, pearl jam wrote black, yellow Ledbetter and even flow- boom that just happened. Fuck off losers, pearl win based on the fact that they have more talent. The end

I think the next time Eddie Vedder plays, You Got to Hide Your Love, he should start off by say,
"I would just like to say that our band (Pearl Jam) is better than The Beatles and The Rolling Stones and The Kinks and The Who and whatever else British Invasion band or great band, because some guy of the Pearl Jam forum said so and a bunch of people who don't know shit about music because they are so obsessed with our band (Pearl Jam) that they have blinders on when it comes to appreciating other music agreed with him.
Also eat shit Tom Petty, Bruce Spingsteen, CCR and Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, Brian Eno and Bowie, you suck also and anyone else I may have left out, and Abbey Road and Exile on Main Street doesn't hold water to Pearl Jam's best albums, now here's a Beatles song for you."
Some people on here need to stop drinking so much Pearl Jam kool aid and realize that there are and have been PLENTY of bands as good or better than Pearl Jam, just because they are your favorite doesn't mean they are better than The Beatles or Rolling Stones, I'm sure if you asked ANY member of Pearl Jam if they think they are better than The Beatles or Rolling Stones they would laugh in your face. I like Dr. Pepper more than any other soda, does that mean it's better than Coke? The Gorge is my favorite music venue, does that mean it's "better" than Red Rocks or MSG?
Pearl Jam is a great band, but IMO don't compare to The Beatles. They have put out some amazing albums over the past 20 years, but look at what The Beatles put out in half the time, how they evolved musically, and single handedly influence the path of music. When "Tomorrow Never Knows" was released on Revolver most artists of the time started reevaluating their music. Just insane how influential they were.
I agree with covering "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"....that would be just amazing.
Have you ever heard the Grateful Dead live versions of Tomorrow Never Knows that they did from 1992-1995, they would do Baba O' Riley into Tomorrow Never Knows it was freaking AMAZING, but most people on this board wouldn't have heard this because they were in Jr. High or High School when the Dead was tearing those tunes up. They (Grateful Dead) also did great versions of Rain and I Want to Tell You before Jerry Garcia died and Phish has been playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps for over 15 years now and it's fantastic.
One of my greatest Grateful Dead concert moments was actually 19 years ago yesterday in Denver, Jerry Garcia had been sick and they had canceled all of their fall tour on the east coast, the first shows back were in Denver, they played a really good show, came out for the encore and played The Beatles: Rain, one of my FAVORITE Beatles song ever.
That's why I get upset when people try to compare the people that tour with or follow Pearl Jam around on tour with Deadheads or Grateful Dead, it's not the same people and it NEVER will be, I HAVE done both, saw Grateful dead 169 times all over the country, west coast, east coast, midwest, south EVERYWHERE and I have seen Pearl Jam all over about 35-40 shows, as I like to say, it's like comparing apples to cannon balls. But Pearl Jam is what I do now and I love it, it's just different, that's also why I don't get all pissed that they don't really play in Texas, I am used to having to travel to see my favorite bands.
If I was in my early 20's, I would have chalked up the ridiculousness of this thread to being on acid. Since I'm 31 now, I'll chalk it up to a flashback instead. Wow. Just wow.
Love Pearl Jam or not, comparing them to the Beatles is absolutely ridiculous. For one thing, if PJ had ever had to deal with Beatlemania, Ed would have quit the band before they even got past a second record. I don't even need to go beyond that part of it. Musically, the Beatles recorded 13 albums over 6.5 years (2/11/63 was Please Please Me, yup recorded in one day; and Abbey Road was finised 8/20/69) - SEVEN of those are absolute masterpieces. Their output, their influence, and most remarkably, their ability to deal with absolutely crippling invasion of their personal lives are unmatched, and, for reasons that have more to do with the dilution of popular music fanbases and distribution methods, never will be.
I mean I love PJ, but this thread is just patently ridiculous
But there is this band The Beatles from Liverpool that just changed music, a generation and how many thought about life.
It is worth mentioning that the ORIGINAL name Stuart Sutcliffe liked was "the Beetles", and for a few shows in 1960 they were billed as "Long John and the Beetles". I'm sure that's what the OP was referencing.

Beatles, Stones, Pearl Jam. Interesting discussion which I hadn't seen until now. Just in terms of number of fans, records sold, that sort of thing, who else belongs in this list? The Who? U2? REM?
I have to say this- better is relative. I know I guy who swears The Replacements were the greatest band ever. I'm ok with that notion because I'm a 'Mats fan myself and may not agree but why why argue the point. I'm sure someone out there would say the same for Uriah Heap.*
*For ten points, can anyone tell us the Paul Westerberg/ Uriah Heap connection?

In terms of records sold, Pearl Jam isn't even anywhere close to that list. We can say that's because the industry has changed, but in three years, Lady Gaga has already sold more records than Pearl Jam (64M to 60M and the gap will only get wider.) Believe it or not, the 300M club has the Beatles, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Madonna, and Zeppelin (who most would expect)... and then Queen, and ABBA! I think we often forget on this message board about just how popular Pearl Jam is. They've definitely got a devoted legion of followers that probably numbers around 1 million worldwide... and that's NOTHING compared to the likes of Bruce Springsteen, U2, AC/DC, Metallica, or even Bon Jovi in terms of active artists.

Good point! I never thought of number of records sold etc. as having anything to do with greatness. To me, one of the greatest rock and roll bands ever is Mission of Burma but I can understand why they're not that big in terms of numbers.

first off, it's the beAtles. secondly, they wrote a hell of a lot more than just "let it be and shit". there's a reason why the beatles are always #1 when it comes to greatest/most influential/talent/originality rankings; its because they were all of the above. they changed the face of music and changed the direction of popular music as we know it. without them music today would look completely different. the beatles farted more talent than pearl jam will ever have. i love pearl jam, they're my favourite band, but let's be realistic here.
also, the stones kick ass, too. do some homework before posting such asinine comments in a thread.

I don't know if this was sarcastic or not, but my point was NOT that records sold have anything to do with greatness - I personally don't believe they do. My point was that the poster I was responding to was looping PJ in with the Beatles and the Stones "in terms of number of fans, records sold, that sort of thing" and the truth is that PJ, as much as we love them, is not on that level. Pearl Jam is an incredible band. They have moved me in ways that I never thought possible. It's been a great 20 years. In terms of connecting on a PERSONAL level, there will never be another Pearl Jam for me. They mean more to me than any band ever could.
On the flip side, they're not even in the top 50 of the most "talented" bands I've listened to. The connection for most of us has been "holy shit those lyrics connect with 'xxxxx' that happened to me in my life" - it doesn't mean that Alive is a better song than "Day in the Life".

No, not sarcastic at all. I totally agree that number of records sold is not necessarily related to greatness. In the case of Beatles/Stones, yes, but others.... maybe not. I also think you're right about PJ not at the level of popularity of the Beatles or Stones. I'm also moved by PJ music in a way that goes beyond fame. I've always liked the Beatles, I've always like the Stones more and today I honestly have to say I like Pearl Jam best. Can't explain it and don't need to!
Answer to Paul Westerberg/Uriah Heap question: In one scene in his movie, "Come Feel Me Tremble" Paul is playing a gig. Someone asks him to play "Answering Machine". He strums a few chords, looks slightly perplexed, shrugs and says, "I can no more play 'Answering Machine' than I can play... Uriah Heap!"
