Andy Rooney. .

I was a page at CBS at the time. My main responsibility was the Late Show with David Letterman but they would also put us in all the various offices (48 Hours, CBS Sunday Morning, CBS News, etc....) The week after Andy Rooney made his remarks about Kurt, I was assigned to "work" for 60 Minutes. I was put in Andy Rooney's office and was given stacks of mail to open. It was all hate mail towards Andy and his, at best, distasteful comments. I made sure some of the uglier ones got to him.0

To quote a great song writer:

"Don't let it get you down, you know, still give your love, just give it away...I love singin' that part." - EV0 -

Fantastic
Even some lines from the movie No Country For Old Men come to mind...."can't stop What's comin'""If you want a friend, feed any animal." - JA

Journey on Andy ...
you were quite the man, spoke from the heart, told it like it was...
at least as you saw it, fearless.
You were funny, bright, wise, creative, and always entertaining.
I shared many of the same opinions on life and people and the quirks of both.
Hope I get to meet you one day ...
pretty funny this am on the news...
was that your spirit playing one last joke?
I think so ... smiling down you were... laughing
I thought I heard... gotcha!
thank you Mr Rooney I'm glad we shared a lifetime0 -
his job was to pander to the older crowd watching 60 minutes, to give them a laugh and to make them feel like part of a larger group of understanding. it was a character that he had created. did he not believe the things he said? I'm sure he did. But I doubt he would have said the same thing about Kurt when he was younger. he just plain out didn't understand it. if it happened in his day, it wasn't talked about, that's for sure.

I think I need to watch that part again about Kurt....
because...
I took it as Andy had about the same tolerance I have for those who end their own lives.
Terribly selfish thing to do, will be felt on the other side and is the easy way out,
cowards way out.
He saw much in his life and respected the gift life is, the gift love is.
The gift of time here.
My feelings come from having been there,
the depths of despair, self loathing and pity
and then understanding that this life is not about ourselves
it is about those who love us and they are the ones who pay the price
in suicides.
I feel suicide is not an option.
But I will watch again,
also his comments went to a mourner I believe
saying how tough life is/ was.
He was the kind of guy not to give alot of sympathy after what he has seen,
what some people face in their lives.
He had a 'get over it' attitude in general. Not bad advice really.0 -

if you didn't go through with it, you HAVEN'T been where Kurt (or any other person who has done the same) was. So there is no place for judgement. By you or Andy Rooney or anyone else.Gimli 1993

if you truly believe that's the EASY way out, you were nowhere near doing it yourself. and there you are again, the non-judger, calling people cowards for something you know nothing about.pandora wrote:He had a 'get over it' attitude in general. Not bad advice really.
if you really believe people with mental/emotional diseases can "get over it", you need to read up a bit more on the subject.Gimli 1993

I doubt Andy Rooney was talking about people with serious medical/mental issues. I would assume he was talking more about the millions of grunge fans at the time who thought they had all of these "problems", when in fact it is just life.
I watch PJ20 and see band members who were going to concerts every night and jamming with their buddies or surfing during the day. The alternatives they had to music was to go back to school and get jobs. Doesn't sound like a bad life to me. Sounds like they controlled their own destiny, yet they were all "troubled"? I think that is what Andy Rooney was getting at.0 -
I get where Andy was coming from as I said in my post.
Glad I didn't go through with it 18 years ago ... that was a gift of life and love.
I hope others find the same...
others can find the same if they make suicide not an option.
I wish Kurt had chosen life for the sake of his daughter. I know we all do.
I feel he wishes the same.
If someone is in that dark place, know you are not alone, love surrounds you,
choose life for love.
I think this is where Andy was going with his comments.0
