Eh, I don't get worked up about it. The guy is a WWII veteran and was way out of touch with the youth of the 90's and today. He's entitled to his opinion and I can respect that.He who forgets will be destined to remember.

I agree he does come off dickish in those clips
You should never make light of other peoples problems, no matter how small you may find them to be. They obviously arent to those struggling through them.
The irony of his statements was that in chastising young people for complaining about not "real problems," then suggesting things that to HIM are real problems, he basically does the exact thing he's at issue with.0 -
I thought Rooney was hilarious there... What is he supposed to say.Ed: 2011-07-09 2012-11-04

well to me the late 80's and early 90's were in a way were pretty depressing, and youth culture needed to pull their heads out of their asses to get out of that depression. So I quess were both right...
still he did come across as pretty.....out of touch. Oh...well...... . . . we will see it all again as things just seem to go round and round and round...

SO TRUE!
Yeah.......
I'm even driving closer to the speed limit as I get older too...."Then the Spirit of God hovered over the water, and God said, Let there be music, and there was Pearl Jam."
Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?0 -
I died. I died and you just stood there. I died and you watched. I died and you walked by and said no. I'm dead.0

yeup, he is totally a dick!
he was an alumni of an all boys military school i attended in albany, ny. met him a few times. he is a rotten old codger :thumbdown:it's largely due to eddie that i liked to jump off of things as a child...0 -
maybe so, but as I get older, I tend to agree with his stance that kids complain too much!
Did I really complain too much when I was younger?
Do I really bitch about kids now?
Shit!!!!!!!"Then the Spirit of God hovered over the water, and God said, Let there be music, and there was Pearl Jam."

Speaking as an "old lady" (at least by the standards of folks on this board): I saw the segment when it aired on "60 Minutes." It's actually far, far nastier than the parts Cameron Crowe chose to use suggest. He mocked Cobain for committing suicide, made fun of his torn jeans, called him a fraud. It was the most pointless, classless, tasteless character assassination I'd seen. There is absolutely no excuse for mocking the dead -- being a cranky old man is no excuse for acting like a raging a$$hole, folks.
I mentioned in the fanviews that that was the last time I watched "60 Minutes;" it is not allowed to air in my home. I have heard, however, that the studio was inundated with complaints and a half-hearted apology was issued the following week. Andy Rooney should have been fired for what he said; that sort of behavior is not acceptable in polite society, and "60 Minutes" and CBS showed a lack of class by letting it slide. All those who seek to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation ought to know that war is the surest and shortest means to accomplish it.0 -
I didn't see the movie yet or those clips but I like many of the comments here in this thread ...
those that show understanding.
Andy Rooney is the high point of 60 minutes for me...
love him and his satire but do I always agree, no.0 -
Pandora, it's not a question of understanding. I felt old watching PJ20. I feel a disconnect between myself and the teenagers I see today. We all age, we have no choice in that. We do, however, have some control over how we age. I like to take some inspiration from Jill Sobule: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5NaPTCk4DY
I accompany my son to a service activity where he spends time with senior citizens at an assisted living facility; all the residents are far older than Andy Rooney was when he spewed his bile. They absolutely love spending time with the teens who visit them, have nothing but praise for them, and after each visit they say "You're coming back next time, aren't you?" I think one of the challenges to all of us as we age is to remember what it was like to be at different stages in our lives and to retain a sense of empathy and openness.
None of this, though, really relates to what Andy Rooney did. Blaming his poor behavior on old age is giving him a free pass and painting all older people with the same broad brush -- old people are cranky, old people suck, old people are angry. Mocking the dead is unacceptable, period. You do not get a free pass because you are old or young or having a bad day. It simply is not done.
Back in the old days, when I was in junior high school, I played on a softball team with a bunch of girls for whom I have no polite words. During practice one day, a funeral procession drove past our field. Five or six of these young... ladies... began screaming at the cars: "Oh, who died? I bet they sucked! I hope you're miserable! You're all losers, so pathetic! I'm glad they're dead!" I ended up quitting that team. Did those girls deserve my understanding? I don't think so. Perhaps they deserve my pity -- perhaps.
The very idea that someone could go on national television and say, oh, wah wah wah, poor Kurt Cobain, his life was so hard he blew his head off, cry me a river, what a loser, wah wah wah, kids these days -- and anyone would find that appropriate, or amusing, or wave it off and say, oh, he's old, don't mind him, well that astounds me.All those who seek to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation ought to know that war is the surest and shortest means to accomplish it.0 -
This is one of those times where the younger me would have been majorly pissed off, but the older me says, "Meh. Must suck to be him."
I find myself saying that a lot more at this point in my life.15 years of sharks 06/30/08 (MA), 05/17/10 (Boston), 09/03/11 (Alpine Valley), 09/04/11 (Alpine Valley), 09/30/12 (Missoula), 07/19/13 (Wrigley), 10/15/13 (Worcester), 10/16/13 (Worcester), 10/25/13 (Hartford), 12/4/13 (Vancouver), 12/6/13 (Seattle), 6/26/14 (Berlin), 6/28/14 (Stockholm), 10/16/14 (Detroit)0 -

His words sound like his fathers, it is old school and I understand them and that....
do I agree, no.
I agree he has the right to say them and I'm sure there are plenty of people who agree with them too.
As far as teens visiting seniors, teens choosing to do this are displaying great character,
unfortunately that is not always the case though, some teens do not.
I'm sure many feel it was a horrible waste ...Kurt Cobain and some even to the point of being
angry and less sympathetic. Suicide for those who have never been close is hard for them to
comprehend, understand and their stance is it is wrong, a waste of a precious life.
Even those who came close, like me, feel this way.
Actually those girls at school did deserve your understanding not pity.
Again my opinion everyone deserves understanding.
Once one approaches life like that it is free flowing, no turning it off.
It is Empathy and what I strive for...
a work in progress of course.
It is not agreeing just understanding how and why a person says or does what they do,
and I try to do it for all.
And I, like you, as I approach 56, feel a disconnect but when one focuses on the positive
it is not so great. I keep a sense of humor, one thing I do like about Andy, and try not to take
it all so serious... It's my path... the small amount of time I have here and it is all good.
Cranky grouchy opinionated ...if an old person chooses to be a little bit of those hell
they earned it. I see those same qualities in the young at times
a little secret for the youth ... old people never feel as old as they look to the young
that's the really good part0
