This was one month after the invasion of Iraq. My perception is that the crazy amount of patriotism had already subsided by this point as many people were supporting the Afghanistan war but not this one.
Dude, it's embarrassing to look back on it now, but I'd say the VAST majority of rank-and-file Americans were completely on board with Iraq at first. One month in, patriotism was STILL at an all-time high.
When they toppled that statue of Saddam? America got a huge woody.
I'd imagine at the moment PJ took the stage in Uniondale that night, George W's approval rating was in the 60s, at least.everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do0 -
i was there, my very first pj show!
i thought it was AWESOME that they played the song, i honestly was a bit surprised by some of the crowds reaction (we cheered) but i do realize, we are minority here in nassau as it is big-time republican country and sure, after 09.11......so many of us NYers lost friends/family...or at least knew of people who did, i personally know no one untouched in one way or another. you live here, you were affected. idk if that contributed to the reaction or not, can't say....though i think it really added to the show, so memorable, and honestly i don't think ed should've been too surprised given the political demographic here. i was a bit disappointed with his anger over it, cutting the show short...but c'est la vie. don't love the tune but love it's message....and what a memory for a first show!Stay with me...
Let's just breathe...
I am myself like you somehow0 -
If you think a criticism of President Bush was anti-American... do you think a criticism of President Obama is also anti-American?Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

Eddie said some more things than what was showed in PJ20 that should have been in the movie (maybe they are in the Kids are 20 cut - I haven't seen it yet). I think he handled it well. It was a strange time because you weren't allowed to be pro- or anti-Bush at the time and he obviously took a side on a big stage in NY. I hate when people say bands shouldn't get political or actors shouldn't get political. They have the right like everyone else - it's our choice to ignore them or listen to them. One of the many great moments I've been able to see the band have over the past 12 years as a NYer, including the Betterman standoff between Eddie and the crowd at the Garden that was also featured in PJ20.
What I would love is a disc of Eddie's stories and rants - no music, just Eddie saying shit at shows between songs.

I hated bush I hated the WAR but I was at the show and i was booing also. it was too soon and not the place for it. only time the band ever pissed me off (not like i matter just wanted to chime in)
But can't you see how the Bush admin took advantage of this in order to drive the country to war?0 -
slightofjeff wrote:Cob wrote:I am still VERY confused as to what happened @ this show and again I wasn't there and I don't live in the New York area. Were people booing because they were/are Bush backers and/or Republicans and they didn't agree with a song being played that wasn't agreeing with their political affiliation?
Or were people booing because they somehow thought that the song was negative about what happened on 9/11??? As I said, I am VERY confused because the song is a dig @ George Bush Jr. (I don't call him W as he was Jr. in Texas FOREVER) and to me doesn't have a thing to do with what happened on that terrible day.
Would the same people if they were (Republicans) be booing today if say a band (or say Toby Keith) came out and played a song that was a dig @ Obama and the singer brought out a mask of Obama or would they be cheering?? As I have stated many times, I know people booed and some people left the show, but I am asking an honest question as to WHY they did this?
When you are at war, as the United States was on that day, and there's a dude on stage stomping the mask of your country's president, what are you supposed to think?
Right are wrong, the reaction that some had in the crowd -- particularly if they'd had loved ones killed in the attacks less than two years earlier -- is understandable, if not completely rational.
Ed never stomped on the mask did he?
People listen to Bushleaguer at Arnhem '06 and what Ed says after the song before going into Leash. I agree with everything he says

I still don't get the connection between being against Bush and being disrespectful to those who lost loved ones in 9/11.
Personally, I really like the song, and I respect them for openly stating their views on Bush and on the war, especially during that time. I also doubt I could support a band that completely contradicts my own political believes, and as someone mentioned above, you knew how they see saw the situation, so you'd expect statements.0 -

I have that shirt also, and have also had to explain that it says Get Right, (not at that show tho). It really is annoying to be from LI and encounter people like this. Gives Long Island a bad name.0 -

Looks like you are right. Most people I knew had already hated Bush at that point. But I was a high schooler in New York at that time so I was not exposed to many viewpoints.

Totally agree.0 -
I never thought people might be booing BUSH not the band criticizing Bush until I read it here... hmmmm... although it's entirely evident that they are booing the band by the end of the song.
I love on the bootleg you can hear a guy shouting out "play some fucking rock and roll!" between Ed's speech.
BTW that version is nothing without the speech that followed on the bootleg... does anyone know if the speech part is included in The Kids Are Twenty version?ABQ 93, Las Cruces 95, ABQ 98, Bridge School 10/30/99, Lubbock 00, ABQ 00, Denver 03, State College 03, San Diego 03, Vegas 03, PHX 03, D.C. 03, Camden 7/5/03, NYC 7/8/03 + 7/9/03, Vegas 06, San Francisco 7/15/06 + 7/16/06 + 7/18/06, Kansas City 10, [EV:ABQ 11/6/12], Chicago 13, PHX 13, Denver 14--PJ24!, Telluride 16, Chicago 8/20/16, Chicago 8/18/18, Phoenix 22, Denver 22, Vegas 5/16/24

It depends on how someone defines patriotism. Foaming at the mouth and chest-thumping because we're blowing up a country (that had nothing to do with 9/11) and carrying out an unjust war isn't my definition of patriotism.
The song should've been played. The climate at the time was that if anyone spoke out against the Bush administration, they were accused of basically committing treason. This general attitude is what Bush used to drive the country into an unjustifiable war. The general conformist attitude of the public, combined with the press giving Bush a free pass, contributed to going into Iraq, as well as Bush's re-election in '04.0
