Why?
First post ever.......
I am writing this post to those that seem to have a problem with the ten club and / or Pearl Jam. I grew up in Chicago through some very hard times, mainly affecting my parents. Music seemed to be my escape, mostly listening to what my older siblings and neighbors listened to. The Police, The Dead, The Ramones, The Who, etc...and then one day, I found my band. In 1991, my sophomore year of high school, I was blessed with a song that turned all of my music interests upside down. I heard Alive on one of the Chicago stations, and immediately felt that this is my music. Nothing glam, nothing old and certainly nothing that had ever been done before.
I bought the Ten album the next morning - skipping class. I listened to Ten in its entirety, at least five times that day. Many of the emotions that I dealt with in my years were addressed in the album. I finally felt a bond with music that I had never felt before. Many of my friends at the time were listening to Skid Row, Motley Crue, Poison, etc...with no lyrical sense or meaning. I finally found something that I had been longing for...music that spoke to me.
I saw Pearl Jam for the first time in 1992 - on my 16th birthday at the Metro. Holy shit! It was unbelievable. I will never forget that show, as I skipped my drivers test to hang out at the metro waiting for the best band ever to play the first chords of Release. It was at that time that I realized that there was no band better - in the past, in the present or in the future.
I have seen PJ many, many times throughout the years, travelling back in forth from Minneapolis (home now) to Chicago, to Wisconsin, to Cali, to DC, to where ever else the road / wave takes me. The music - please, it is the music that has brought us here (not the goods, or limited t-shirts, posters, dvds, etc), the music means something to all of us. It will always be our bond. Although I have never met any of you, I feel at home any time I see our favorite band walk on to stage and bust out the first note. What those five individuals put together back in 1991 and continued during the last 20 years is special. Just look at any other band that has been around that long - or better yet look at new bands these days that have a little bit of promise - they don't really compare (in my opinion).
Anyway, my point is this...Pearl Jam is a band that speaks to those that want to hear them. They do what they do for us. They do what they do for the greater good of music. They do what they do because they care. And lastly, they do what they do, because that is what they want to do. I am tired of reading this board to see complaints about stuff that was produced as a privilege to us as fans. We do not deserve anything - we are fans of a fucking awesome band - and that is it. Our privilege is the music. We are blessed each year with concerts - near or fucking far away. It is our choice to travel or not. Regardless, we are rewarded with bootlegs to share an experience that we could not be present for...
Well, my time is up...I have spent way too much time on a first post. I hope those that read this put things in perspective before complaining. We are lucky to have seen Pearl Jam live, the material stuff is a nice to have and that is all. Cheers to the music and long live PJ.

And my counterpoint would be that many of us are troubled that the band we have grown up loving more than anything else seems to be changing in a way that is troubling.
I don't feel a sense of privilege for these products, I feel a lack of respect, and I feel hurt that a band who has so valiantly fought AGAINST the system for so many years seems to be buying into it now more than ever.
I will agree, however, that Pearl Jam is still flippin' awesome, despite my bitching!
I felt like I was reading my own feelings....thank you for your post.
Thank you to Pearl Jam for sharing their souls through the music.
too many words for me tonight.....but rock on.
Well said.
You feel hurt? Don't. The band is thriving and so they should. The things that disappoint you are things that are completely irrelevant. You either dig the band and their music or you don't. Selling socks and backpacks doesn't diminish the quality of the band's music (make it less profound) nor their character- the fans want the goods and these guys deserve to make a lucrative living being one of the greatest bands ever. Don't you think?
I see nothing wrong with people complaining about the merchandise.
If all Pearl Jam stood for was the music, they would not have T-Shirts, DVDs, Blu Rays, Vinyl, Special Limited Vinyl, Hoodies, Posters, Special Limited Hoodies, Limited Posters, Books, Limited Books, Limited Special Edition Books, Stickers, Pins, Badges, Back Packs, Limited Back Packs, Limited Lap Top Bags, 'Onesies', Limited Water Bottles, Keychains, Hats, Beanies, Limited song books, Fucking socks, etc....
Are we seeing a pattern here?
They make music because people love music.
They make merchandise because people love merchandise.
We on the forum discuss ALL... ALL that is Pearl Jam.
Now if they made an album and only allowed 1000 people to hear it ever... would you complain? I would.
The complaints to me are sound. All these people want is an equal opportunity to possess something that means a lot to them. Whether you believe an object should have any kind of meaning is your opinion. But at the same respect... how can a song contain any meaning? Or an image? The difference between a song and a book or a poster is unique to each person. Most people on this board would agree that the music is the most important part of Pearl Jam... but it's not the ONLY part of Pearl Jam.
.... I respect opinions. And to the OP... welcome to the board!

Can I get this on a sticker and or badge please?
Personally, I agree with OP because for me (us - I'm speaking for hubby as well) it IS all about the music. I really don't care for merch. I'll buy it, but I see it as an added bonus, to have these little odds and ends to brighten up my otherwise very dull, corporate life. Bleh...
The merch shit doesn't own me, the music does.
Kudos to the OP for this post.
its about the fuckin music....thanks again..

It's all about perspective.
I have a brother who is homeless, going through a daily struggle of battling addictions to oxycodone and crack cocaine. He has possible untreated bipolar disorder on top of that. Maybe a bit of obsessive compulsive disorder, too. It remains to be seen as he is in ongoing observation.
His biggest joy in life is his daily methadone shot, and maybe nailing a home cooked meal, and a warm spot to sleep.
Just having a brother in this state, who not too long ago was normal, has shifted my perspective in life so greatly, I cannot put it into words.
I just don't pay attention to the complaining about the merch, etc, because in my opinion, these things are so damn trivial I feel like I'm watching a cartoon.
I wish all of you can peer into a day in the life of my brother. Backpacks or limited editions this and thats and the bitching about such things in life....wow...
Reset your perspective.
That's all I gotta say.
Amen!
In the end, its all just stuff anyways. Happiness is only real when shared. Like at a Pearl Jam concert.
