MASTODON

Big Mastodon fan here. Have been since Remission.
My first live experience was seeing them with Slayer and Children of Bodom at a MySpace secret show in SLC, Utah back in August of 2006. My, was that a wonderful day of unexpected metal. Mastodon killed it. They were supporting Leviathan and the absolutely played each song perfectly. I was really impressed.
Saw them last October in support of Crack The Skye, and again... they did a wonderful job. The show was much more elaborate. They've certainly been gaining popularity. They are scheduled for yet another show here very soon and I cannot wait! Also really excited about the new album.
Mastodon and Down are probably my two favorite modern metal bands. Type O Negative would top that list... but, ya know... with Peter Steele passing they are kind of no more.7/2/06 - Denver, CO

Solid, but not up there with Blood Mtn. or Crack the Skye for me.0

Very good to hear! I have had the album now for two days but haven't been able to listen to it yet! Stuck at work for a bit longer but can't wait to crank it when I get off (wow, that's kind of a filthy sounding sentence...)0 -

Same here! I honestly didn't know what to expect with a title like that but the song rules. The whole album is amazing!

So I think the band is stalking me i seem to see them everywehre. I've seen them out on the town twice this week along.
Saw Troy and Brann ath the Kyuss/Sword/Monsto show on Monday night (sure it had some to do with troy's brother being in Monstro)
Saw Brent at the Wilco show (yeh did not expect to see him there!) last night about 4 rows behind me.
I think they are stalking me and it needs to stop.
I like that i see them at shows though. Love knowing I am listening or listened to the same shit they do.
As for the new album..... its not blown me away but i'll give it some more time.Charlotte 00 | Charlotte 03 | Asheville 04 | Atlanta 12 | Greenville 16 | Columbia 16 |Seattle 18 | Nashville 22 | Ohana Festival 24 x2 | Atlanta 25 x20 -
Alright so I've had some time to get into the record and I have to say I think it's awesome. It's pretty cool that they've proven they don't need a theme to anchor to for the inspiration to make a great record.
The only song I don't really get is "All the Heavy Lifting". It's way too generic for Mastodon both lyrically and musically. I hate to say it but it sounds like Disturbed or something (who totally blow, though I'm sure "Lifting" is still better than anything they've ever written). Anyone else feel that way?Post edited by october22 on0 -
The album is growing on me. I was very underwhelmed at first. Slowly i'm liking it. I still think it is their worst yet, but the standard is pretty high so that does not mean it is not a good albumCharlotte 00 | Charlotte 03 | Asheville 04 | Atlanta 12 | Greenville 16 | Columbia 16 |Seattle 18 | Nashville 22 | Ohana Festival 24 x2 | Atlanta 25 x20

That's probably true. I still need more time for a final determination but it will be very tough to beat the last three records. I will put it over Remission, however. I like Remission a lot but this newer sound is more my usual style. Over the years, I see myself playing this over Remission.0 -
Actually it sounds more like an awesome Queens of the Stone Age record than a Mastodon record. That's not a bad thing. Just my thoughts.0

Yeah i agree. When i first heard it iwas like it sounds like a more technical version of the sword. I see the QOTSA thing. My buddy called it a stoner metal album. Its got some good stuff on it for sureCharlotte 00 | Charlotte 03 | Asheville 04 | Atlanta 12 | Greenville 16 | Columbia 16 |Seattle 18 | Nashville 22 | Ohana Festival 24 x2 | Atlanta 25 x20

So the album's really sinking in now more and more. I'm really feeling Dry Bone Valley a lot now. My current favorite on the record at this point. It switches a lot and I can't really include the first 2 tracts on the record as I listened to them constantly leading up to the release. Eventually they will blend into the rest as time goes by but right now I'm more interested in the "new" stuff. I just love Brann's vocals on DBV. Almost has an old-school feel to it and the rolling drums are killer. What are your favorites?0

Shit man. Not that many people into talking Mastodon here I guess. That's cool but I trolled around the boards over at MastodonRocks.com and those guys are real dicks to each other there. Made me appreciate the usual respectful tone here.0

There were a lot of assholes on the Black Crowes thread too. But it seems that forum has completely disappeared. :?
This is one of the nicer forums I've visited, which is why I regularly come back. Good people here.7/2/06 - Denver, CO

This band can do no wrong for me. While quite different for them, this is probably my album of the year. Stargasm is my fave track on the record. Totally agree on the QOTSA sound. Hear some Alice in Chains at times too.0
