Alright so I've had some time to get into the record and I have to say I think it's awesome. It's pretty cool that they've proven they don't need a theme to anchor to for the inspiration to make a great record.

The only song I don't really get is "All the Heavy Lifting". It's way too generic for Mastodon both lyrically and musically. I hate to say it but it sounds like Disturbed or something (who totally blow, though I'm sure "Lifting" is still better than anything they've ever written). Anyone else feel that way?

The album is growing on me. I was very underwhelmed at first. Slowly i'm liking it. I still think it is their worst yet, but the standard is pretty high so that does not mean it is not a good album

That's probably true. I still need more time for a final determination but it will be very tough to beat the last three records. I will put it over Remission, however. I like Remission a lot but this newer sound is more my usual style. Over the years, I see myself playing this over Remission.

Actually it sounds more like an awesome Queens of the Stone Age record than a Mastodon record. That's not a bad thing. Just my thoughts.

Yeah i agree. When i first heard it iwas like it sounds like a more technical version of the sword. I see the QOTSA thing. My buddy called it a stoner metal album. Its got some good stuff on it for sure

So the album's really sinking in now more and more. I'm really feeling Dry Bone Valley a lot now. My current favorite on the record at this point. It switches a lot and I can't really include the first 2 tracts on the record as I listened to them constantly leading up to the release. Eventually they will blend into the rest as time goes by but right now I'm more interested in the "new" stuff. I just love Brann's vocals on DBV. Almost has an old-school feel to it and the rolling drums are killer. What are your favorites?

Shit man. Not that many people into talking Mastodon here I guess. That's cool but I trolled around the boards over at MastodonRocks.com and those guys are real dicks to each other there. Made me appreciate the usual respectful tone here.

Sorry to hear that  Maybe I just need to listen to the new album more, but Crack the Skye is still my fave!

There were a lot of assholes on the Black Crowes thread too. But it seems that forum has completely disappeared. :?

This is one of the nicer forums I've visited, which is why I regularly come back. Good people here.

This band can do no wrong for me. While quite different for them, this is probably my album of the year. Stargasm is my fave track on the record. Totally agree on the QOTSA sound. Hear some Alice in Chains at times too.

Mastodon's Troy Sanders, QOTSA Troy Van Leeuwen and a few guys from At The Drive In are putting out an 8 song EP under the band name Gone Is Gone. The first song is here. Not too bad.

Their new double album is awesome. So many things I like about it. Notably the production-David Bottrill was at the helm and compressed it just a tad. Always felt they sounded a bit looser than they should and Dailor's drums were a bit overpowering. Got it bang on for me and the songs are great. Especially the one with Kim Thayil.

Emperor Of Sand is also fantastic if you're going further into their catalogue.
