Has anyone bought a record of an artist just because the guys are fans?

Neil Young and the Who. I'm glad about that. I also bought hovercraft's experiment below - not so glad about that one.0

I've found some really great music through this band.0

I usually check out the bands that open for PJ- that's how I discovered and now love KOL"I can't hear you, you're trailing off and did I catch a niner in there? Were you calling from a walkie-talkie?"
 "No, it was cordless."0

Wow, i guess i'm one of the few that actually understand why PJ or maybe just Ed liked Sleater-Kinney. Now, i agree the voice is an aquired taste, but these chicks rock. I've never heard anyone play guitar like Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss is up there with Matt as far as drumming goes. The lyrics can be pretty deep at times if you can get past the voice. I actually like the voice, I couldn't imagine SK with any other vocalist. Anyway, I think it was in a RS interview that Ed was asked what music he was listening to and he mentioned SK and Cat Power. I checked both out and I liked them. A few months later they annouced that SK would tour with them and It got even better. Anyway, yes there have been a ton of bands that PJ have introduced me to. It's better to get recommendations from your friends than from the mainstream media.Down in the hole, Jesus tries to crack a smile beneath another shovel load.0

 ditto.
 yuck!
as for young and the who it's not because of pj, it's because my 'rents played them so i grew up listening.
KOL - again not because of pj. because the sex on fire vid is kinda hot. hehehe...yeah, i said it. what.*~Pearl Jam will be blasted from speakers until morale improves~*0

man, there's some real antipathy for sleater-kinney around here, eh? for me, i was sorta ambivalent towards 'em until i saw them open up for PJ in 03, and i gotta say those chicks won me over, they wail (in the good way...) i didn't find them to be an aquired taste at all and dug them right away once i started actually listening to them...to each their own i guess...
(but surely no one has a problem with corin tucker in hard sun...)0

band introduced me to KOL, MMJ, Wintersleep and Liam Finn...all of which have become standard in the rotation for me (most have also been passed along to countless friends and family who have become fans) - seems my tastes have almost always aligned pretty well with music connected to the band (with a few notable exceptions - SK comes to mind)0

            No
I've been a Who fan for 30 years, I ddn't need Ed or PJ to introduce me to them
and I've been a Neil fan for longer that PJ have been around
other than that, there's really no one else out there that i've heard that makes me want to go out and buy their stuffDon't come closer or I'll have to go0

After that Doug Pinnick performance with WMA Atlanta 94 I almost got tempted to getting into Kings X just for kicks, but keep forgetting. Maybe I'll go to Imeem later.model role model0

Sure. Back in the early 90's I was in HS and didn't know much about Neil Young so they opened the door for me. More recently they exposed me to Death Cab, KOL, MMJ, Robert Pollard. I can't say I love all of their music, but I did enjoy seeing most of them live (especially Death Cab and MMJ).0

I watched Harold and Maude yesterday...because, Ed mentioned it so much in his solo shows. I have been on a Cat Stevens kick since. I have always been familiar with Cat Stevens (my parents had his records when I was a kid), but, the songs have new meaning now that I am older.
If I knew where it was I would take you there. There's much more than this0

i've been introduced to bands thanks to PJ, like death cab and ben harper, but i wouldn't buy an album sight unseen (or sound unheard i suppose!) just because someone in the band likes it. i'm more liable to trust a friend's recommendation just because they'd know me and know what i already like.
i was a huge neil finn fan before ed worked with him, and saw liam before he went on tour with ed, so i prefer to think that ed just has my good taste in that respect 0 0

back in '92, seeing my idol wearing those ice cube shirts, i got into listening to those beats & films ice cube did. still today, i enjoy some of his films & listen to .. well, the old school tunes of his.0

Not particularly - I was raised on The Who, Crosby, Stills, Nash &Young, et al. - but after listening to Death Cab for Cutie on the recommendation of someone who saw them open for PJ, I bought their three most recent albums.
