    food , shelter and clothing are basic necessities of living. All the rest is.......as you say selfish. Although I would posit the arguement the PJ and other artists fill a necessity too.

    Also - to the posters who call this just another anti-US thread or to the one who wished me to die, why don't you actually discuss the topic at hand compared to simply blowing it off - it's a lazy way to stick to your own little narrow views with dismissing others with no real fact to back it.

    I'm a patriot. I believe in the tenets our nation was founded upon. I'm not loyal to a party, administration or politician. Our nation is more than those simplistic things. In terms of 9-11, a ceremony remembering the dead doesn't mean much of anything if we don't learn and grow from the experience itself. The funeral for these people passed, perhaps it's time to actually stop what caused it instead of continuing it? Seems like a legitimate and logical process, but in our ultra-nationalist society, the ceremony is what's important. And for those of you who claim and say you're so caring about 3,000 people, do you do the same for other victims in tragedies of recent? Our society has a very false sense of morality, care and justice. Ceremonies and remembrances of these sort only point out the hypocrisy of it where it is displayed so over the top. People in our society aren't interested in changing, growing or having things fixed at the cost of it effecting them directly. The messages and meanings are forgotten over time and it's just an empty puppet show carried out to extract some type of patriotic and victimization thought process instead.

    i don't think we have to either or here. . many lives were lost on that day and because of that day.

    I agree with what you are getting at. That we should learn the lessons of what to do and what NOT to do that these attacks have shown us. We may be better served in thinking about the what we have and haven't done in the past 10 years, instead of just the one day. Have we honored the ones who died that day... or used their deaths to satisfy our own wants?
    I am hoping that is isn't going the be the predictable media blitz to garner ratings... or the same old tiresome politics of over analyzing and interpreting messages based upon out of context sentences in 5 second sound bites.
    But, in today's environment... I'm not holding my breath.

    Wow, i never knew that this was the topic. I agree that some have forgotten about that day but i don't think its fair to say that everyone has. I still think that there are many people who did change from that day.

    you might not like how they changed but they did change.

    Some individuals change, but as a whole, our nation has reiterated and followed the same path which what got us attacked to begin with. If you wanna call that "change" so be it, but we the people are our government and their actions are a reflection of and by us. Simply because we sit on our hands, doesn't mean we're removed from it.

    I didn't say it's ALL I think about.

    You're exactly right. It's incredibly sad how a tragedy caused more deaths and affected more lives than can possibly be imagined.

    Maybe instead of just saying 1000000 people died after those events, I should also say over 4000 American troops died as well. That seems to pull at America's heart strings more.

    It seems to me we have two topics going here. First is that many innocent people died on 9/11/01 and that was tragic, sad, horrible. We lost the Hellen Keller library- also sad and tragic. We're still loosing firefighters who went in to try to help to health issues and young men today going to wars that have no real meaning- also very sad and tragic. In quiet thoughtfulness we should remember those we've lost.

    But secondly we have an event to which we as a nation (the U.S.) have responded terribly. We've retaliated by killing more innocent people. We've amped up racial profiling in America. We've eroded individual freedoms. We've lied to oursleves and others. Many of us remember these things with a less-than-quiet anger.

    And lets not forget this- the root cause of 9/11 was two things: Oil and religion.

    If 'the Terrorists' create chatter that they are going to do something... and we scramble resources and spend millions on beefed up security... and all the terrorists are doing is lying about an attack... doesn't that mean THEY are winning?
