Since the news came out about Obama's further movement toward weaking U.S. air pollution laws (and it should be noted that this news was released just before the Labor Day holiday, possibly with the hope that we would all forget about it by Tuesday) much has been said in the (so-called) liberal and certainly in the progressive press about how disheartening, even down right despicable, this action by our president is. This is not the action of a socialist preident. It is the action of a president who seems to be buckling under corporate pressure.
We living in a very critical time in human history. We already live in a world that has been permanently changed by human-generated pollution and environmental degradation. Findings have shown that if we do not cap the CO2 concentrations in the air at 350PPM we will sell out our grandchildren's hopes of having a hospitable world in which to live (see 350.org as a starting place- there's a ton of info out there to confirm this).
Our best hope is that if re-elected, our president will see the dire predicament in which we find ourselves and begin to change the disasterous direction in which his environmental, (read: anti-environmental/pro-corporate) policies have turned."It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0 -

i think suggesting that the band compromise on who they are and what they believe is insulting.fear4freedom wrote:thank all of you for reading and responding to my post! How can one band criticize Bush so intensely and harshly, while promoting Obama with so much pride, and not publicly criticize Obama now? Its hypocrisy to the bone! OH and yes Pearl Jam has utilized Capitalism on every front! You have to understand that everything PJ does is a product of the benefits of Capitalism! From the very beginning...to now....Capitalism needs to be understood and appreciated! Everything we do....is a product of it! Sean Penn and Hugo Chavez are not the way to go! Sorry!
they have a platform and they have earned that platform. anybody that has a platform and does not use it is doing the people a disservice. the guys are very genuine and have always worn their feelings and their thoughts on the issues on their sleeves for everyone to see. that passion is what endears them to millions of people. they have been a band now for 20 years and they have stayed true to who they are. they have played the game when they had to, but they still they have conviction and they still have their integrity. stone is not going to come out tomorrow and support michelle bachmann after all these years of raging against people like her. and to second what "_" said earlier, they don't care about those that disagree, and they shouldn't have to. we are not all going to 100% agree on anything, and you don't compromise your values to appeal to 50% of your audience.
i am closer to a socialist than obama ever will be, and to call him a socialist is an insult to socialists. i realize you are new here and you most likely did not see the thread, but weeks ago there was a poster on here who said they had "undeniable proof" that obama is a "kenyan marxist", and when asked for the proof he disappeared. i am still waiting for that proof, because it was probably the biggest load of bull i have ever read on this forum and i wanted to be proved wrong, ya know? i will never ever come out on here and talk about how great i think our capitalist system is, because i don't believe that it is that great.
i listened to aaron lewis of staind bash obama merciessly on the jason ellis show today and your posts sound surprisingly similar. are you aaron lewis?

It really is interesting how American's view complex concepts. Marxism, socialism, even capitalism all seem to be viewed in generic terms as vague images instead of complex philosophical and economic systems. The terms become labels that are either blindly praised or turned to name calling. In the 50's and 60's it was "commie pinkos", now in the 10's it's "Kenyan Marxist president" and all the while capitalism has been seen as an unchallenged, nearly perfect system. Are any of these systems taught in school any more?"It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0 -
it is a shame how our media and our education system allows this to happen. i mean, there is this big fucking thing called the internet that has a lot of information on it. stop spouting fox news/opinion talking points, do some research, or log on and buy a book...brianlux wrote:gimmesometruth27 wrote:i am closer to a socialist than obama ever will be, and to call him a socialist is an insult to socialists. i realize you are new here and you most likely did not see the thread, but weeks ago there was a poster on here who said they had "undeniable proof" that obama is a "kenyan marxist", and when asked for the proof he disappeared. i am still waiting for that proof, because it was probably the biggest load of bull i have ever read on this forum and i wanted to be proved wrong, ya know? i will never ever come out on here and talk about how great i think our capitalist system is, because i don't believe that it is that great.

ATTN GIMME SOME TRUTH!! If you take a close look at my posts i have never called Obama a socialist, marxist, radical or any particular personal attack! I am very civil and I do seek the truth also! I have respect for Obama even though i disagree with him completely on policy and leadership! I have never seen a lack of leadership like this! If Pearl Jam would walk the walk that they talked in the past.....they would criticize someone they voted for! THAT WOULD SAY SOMETHING! That would be conviction! If they were TRULY for THE PEOPLE they would criticize Obama publicly about many things that he is failing us on! That would show me that Pearl Jam is for REAL! That would show me they are party neutral and its all about the principles ....not the partys! Thats what PJ needs to do! Be FOR REAL! Show us they can drop their pride!
They should criticize the expanded war efforts in Libya, Afganistan, Iraq and other areas. They should publicly critcize the lack of leadership in enviromental efforts. They should publicly criticize the lack of leadership in the oil spill efforts. They should criticize the the growth of the federal govt..
Also, PJ could play a concert for our troops! They should also condemn conspiracy theories that weaken our country! They should also speak positively to others around the world about us! They should believe that we are part of the solution....not the problem!
It would be nice to know that they are on our side ....worldwide! It would be nice to know that they can be for real....and show us that its about us....not the govt. or the DEM. party!Theres no time like the present

why should pearl jam denounce socialism when clearly socialism is not a threat and will never happen in this country? that would be like asking them to prematurely denounce the hague for prosecuting george w bush, which also will never happen. they are going to say and do what they want to say and do and nothing we say on here is going to change their beliefs. i think that this year is about them and they are not concerned about what obama is doing. because really, talking about it does nothing. they are about to release a movie and do you think they really want to piss off a lot of people before that comes out? ed played no war here in st louis in july, so he is still speaking out. i am against action in libya and have denounced obama on many occasions here over expanding the wars, giving in and not fighting for universal single payer health care, blanket support of israel at the un, weakening the epa, and iam sick to death of hearing him give a speech promising to do things that he has no intention of doing.. he is spineless and weak. he has sold out his base. but he has not accomplished what he really wanted to do because the tea party hijacked gop will not allow him to do anything. he can't just create laws and issue executive orders at will. there is a process for passing legislation. for awhile there last year he only got 1 vote from one republican on a lot of the legislation he wanted passed. he ended up getting a few more on the health care bill, but that was because the gop people had to break party rank to save their own careers. the stalling and filibustering in the senate and unwillingness to agree on anything in congress has reduced him to a transient official who is powerless. it is not his fault when 60% of the legislative branch has already made up it's mind to vote no before debate is even heard.fear4freedom wrote:ATTN GIMME SOME TRUTH!! what is it you want them to say exactly? "we are against the war but we support the troops?" is that not a contradiction? how can anyone support the troops without supporting the mission? how about "we are not voting for obama, and we are not voting for a republican, and since obama will have no challenger in the priomary we are going to stay home and not vote"?? what kind of a message is that? when people don't vote the system fails..not that it works well at the moment, but how can you go from ed in 2003 saying "if you don't vote they should put that on your headstone!" to "don't vote"?
they have spoken out on oil spills. but the gop's motto is "drill baby drill" so how is them talking against drilling going to change anything? and everyone knows that that gulf spill was not obama's fault. it was bp's negligence. it just happened on obama's watch. who knew the damn thing was going to explode?
condeming the conspiracy theories is not a band's job. that is the job of the media. and i don't believe that we are part of the solution when we are fucking things up for so many other countries in the context of wars, pollution, economic sanctions, blanket support of israel and opposition to a palestinian state etc etc. financially crippling other countries and meddling in their affairs is not a solution..it makes the problems worse."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

Let's also remember that for such a well know band, Pearl Jam has done a lot in terms of activism. But that's not their job alone. We should not expect too much that way from a rock band but should be thankful for what they have done. I totally agree with this... WHY does anyone need confirmation from a rock band? I don't agree with everything they say... they do not speak for me. And i don't need nor want them to voice my opinions.
I figure, if someone wants to 'denounce Socialism'... then they should just fucking denounce Socialism... themselves.Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!
