so i have a tragic story to tell. i so dont wanna tell it but I feel with a newborn coming into the Pearl Jamily there is a need.
Monday Andy and I had the day off. I had to work at 5.
I cant remember what time it was but I was watching the telly and I could hear the dogs barking and growling, but it was different to the way they normally sounded.
I started heading out the back and asked Andy if he could hear them, as soon as he said no I knew something was wrong.
I started running down to the back yard and I saw our Neighbour hanging over the fence yelling at the dogs, i couldnt see them as our back yard drops off just before the fence. He screamed to me that the dogs had his cat.
At this stage the dogs started running up the side of the fence and Asher was first, with the Cat in his mouth. I screamed at him to drop the cat and luckily, due to endless playing with balls, he knew this command, although considering this was a meal to him, I didnt think he would drop it.
So while trying to keep to dogs off the Cat (and believe me, all they could see was prey) I screamed to Andy about a billion times. He ran down and grabbed Nooki and i Picked up Asher (all 27kgs of him) and we locked them in our top yard. I could not go back down so Andy did.
I was nearly sick.... i thought I was gonna have an attack of some sort. My heart was going crazy and all I could hear was the poor meows from a mauled Cat. When Andy finally came back I broke down in fits of tears.
I couldnt believe that the Cat had got into our back yard, just at the time the dogs were there, and unfortunately couldnt get out in time.
I knew the little kitty would not make it... i just knew. and I was horrified.
Our dogs are the most loving, amazing beautiful Huskies ever. They are so very loving with all humans and I could never imagine them ever attacking one.
A Cat on the other hand to them is prey. Huskies are not wolves, but they have a very high prey drive and this was the case on Monday. They dis not see the cat as something to sniff or play with, they just wanted to eat it... end of story. And its so hard for me to say that.
So then on Tuesdya, Im sure you all saw the news. A two week old Baby was killed by a Siberian Husky.
All that we really know is that the Husky was taken away just before the arrival to stay with relatives.
Then one week after the baby was brought home at 2 weeks old, the Husky was brought home. The baby was in its cot, the parents watching telly, the Dog was supposed to have been outside.
Who knows whether the Husky took the baby thinkin of it as prey, or a toy, or who knows what.
From this story we learn that we can never trust animals around children, ever. You can just never know what might happen. And its a funny thing for me to say because growing up, I never had any less than 20 pets!! At least a few Cats a couple of dogs, cows and horses at a time and from a very young age. I guess I was lucky nothing bad ever happened to me.. but you just never know.
And I feel terrible for the parents because they must feel the shittest they have ever felt in their lives right now, but they fucked up. They did not make sure the dog was locked outside, and this was their mistake, as much at the same time it was accidental, it was their mistake and to me that makes them responsible.
So Andy and I went to see the couple yesterday who lost their Cat. We did not know until yesterday if it was still alive or not. And the look on their faces was enough to let us know without words.
I could not be sorry enough to them, as they told us it was ok, and not anyones fault. Poor Buggers, I know i'd be devastated in their shoes.
The only solace I take from it... and its really not even solace, is that the Cat had only been with them for a little while. Im hoping that the short time might make the loss a little easier.... but I know if it was me, it would not..
My dogs are the best.... and I feel bad for them because they were only doing what is instinctual to them, but it doesnt help me either.
The point to this. Glenn, please take heed. Anyone with little kiddies, please take heed. No one should suffer the pain those parenys are feeling.he who forgets will be destined to remember0 -

You're right. It's only natural instinct. That way of thinking is bred into them. No amount of 'domestication' is gonna suppress those natural instincts.
It's exactly the same with cats. If a cat sees a hamster running around on the floor, it's not going to recognise it as a pet, it sees the hamster as food........natural instincts0 -
