riot act is a great album, but thats another story..you have the chance to see live songs from Backspacer?PissBottleMan wrote:Citizen Zack wrote:Favorite Backspacer tune?
Unthought Known is a great track.
Amongst The Waves is another highlight.
The first three songs are a nice way to start off a record.

i saw all exept Force of nature and speed of sound and totally change my opinion about some songs, like johhny guitar ,fixer etc...its great live,at the album doesnt sounds that great as live.."...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”0 -
I love Backspacer, it's a fun album to listen to all the way through I think. It's my favorite since Yield even though I like the albums inbetween.
My favorites are Speed of Sound, Force of Nature, Gonna see my Friend, and Got Some. Speed of Sound is the only one I've listened to on repeat for an hour on end though, I love that song.0 -
I kind of put Backspacer away. Not that I dont like it, because i think its a damn good album, but i always kind of forget about it.
While not initially liking GSMF that much, one day it hit me like a ton of bricks as to how much this one jams!!
Force of nature is one of their better songs in the entire catalog IMO.
Just Breathe was my wedding song.
The only song i dont quite dig is Amongst the Waves. I dont know what it is. To me, it seems a bit boring i guess. Plain for a Pearl Jam song. There's a trapdoor in the sun.0 -
Backspacer is a good album, easy to listen to.
Force of Nature is a powerful song, one of my favs.
But I hope the next record will be more complex, something in the direction of the wonderful No Code album.0 -
I like Backspacer in the Spring/Summer and Riot Act in the Fall/Winter
two completely different beasts here, folks“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”0 -
LOVE Backspacer! Some of my favorites are Gonna See My Friends, Got Some, Johnny Guitar, Amongst the Waves, Speed of Sound, and Force of Nature.
Force of Nature stays on repeat for a while whenever the song comes on. My favorite on the album.
I didn't care for Johnny Guitar and Speed of Sound until Hartford last year. They nailed "Speed of Sound" in Hartford.Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford

Don't come closer or I'll have to go0 -
I think Backspacer is a great timeline album... for myself anyways. The time Riot Act was released I was going through some rough times and I could agree with all the tracks from it... Fav- 1/2Full.
Backspacer... it seems life is more centered and I can now enjoy the beauty of life. Amongst the Waves WOW and of course the other greats.
Bottom line I think all PJ albums are awesome because through out the 20 yrs... each song/cd has been there and they still trigger memories to this day.
I await Elderly woman in TO and Hamilton.

Backspacer is awesome. Middle of the record is the best part...Just Breathe > Amongst the Waves > Unthought Known. Cameron's drumming is at its finest on the opening trio, which make for a powerhouse uptempo 9 minutes. The End is an epic, even at its short length. Force of Nature is a soaring beauty, Speed of Sound is a fascinating character study, Johnny Guitar is a new slant on Ed's love for the underdog with a sick middle eight and Supersonic just rocks, tiny little badass McCready solo and all.
If someone put a gun to my head to rank the tracks (from weakest to strongest):
11. Supersonic
10. Speed of Sound
9. Johnny Guitar
8. Force of Nature
7. The Fixer
6. Got Some
5. Gonna See My Friend
4. Just Breathe
3. The End
2. Amongst the Waves
1. Unthought KnownI am lost, I'm no guide, but I'm by your side.
I am right by your side.0 -
i'm glad you like it more. that gives me hope. i like it..just don't love it. but i was that way with every pj album...0

It's a nice little record...it's a long way from being as bad as Riot Act. Now, that's bad.

I concur. LolAnother habit says it's in love with you
Another habit says its long overdue

Backspacer is a good record, just minus Speed of Sound and supersonic.
Live on 10 legs.......now I find that flat out boring.0 -

Riot Act owns Backspacer. Can't Keep,Ghost,You Are, Save You, 1/2 Full and All Or None. It's not a complete album but Backspacer doesn't have a song as good as any of these imo.PissBottleMan wrote:For whatever reason, Backspacer gets a bad rap around here.

Riot Act is amazing. In my opinion not a bad song on it. Backspacer.......I just can't get into it. Unthought Known I just think is a poor man's Given To Fly. Its not even that. Ed doing it solo I like but PJ doing it I don't like. Supersonic is dreadful. Still like The Fixer, but gone off Got Some.
Obviously Just Breathe and The End are beautiful but I can't help but think Just Breathe belongs on Into The Wild. Its an Ed song, not a PJ song.
Gotta say though, I'm loving Force Of Nature. Listened to San Diego '09 boot last week and it sounded great, made me like that song alot more so that is probably my favourite Backspacer song.
Anyway thats my thoughts, be it right or wrong.2000: Manchester

I agree with this. I wasn't keen on all of Backspacer at first because it didn't seem like a PJ record. But I've come to appreciate the fact that the band (and us) have grown and matured and changed. And Backspacer reflects that nicely. I do think there's a lack of McCready on the record. But all in all, I'm appreciating it more lately. Glad I gave it a spin today."Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them." - Thoreau

Just listened to Backspacer. Actually liked it alot more. Think I'm warming to it though I think it will always be my least favourite album.
Still think 'Supersonic' is awful though!!!2000: Manchester

I also like Backspacer a lot. My faves are Force of Nature, Speed of Sound, The Fixer (it's such a good song to go to work to, always makes me smile and lifts my mood
), and I also love Just Breathe and The End. Unthought Known grew a lot on me when I heard it live.
I listened to it a lot when it came out. It truly deserves a little more attention from me, it's such a feelgood record.

)
Oh, and I also have lots of love for Riot Act! I liked what one poster said about Backspacer for spring and summer and Riot Act for autumn / winter. Fits imo
Please, Pearl Jam, consider a Benaroya Hall vinyl reissue! http://community.pearljam.com/discussion/148993/please-pearl-jam-consider-a-vinyl-benaroya-hall-re-issue0 -
Love them both. Equally.

this may sound a wee bit strange, but i usually start listening with the third song first then through all the other songs ..then back to the first and second, again~
