Backspacer

I just spun this vinyl while cleaning the house and it really sounded great. I never hated this album, but I never really loved it. But some things I've definitely noticed long before, but really connected with me today -

1. Gonna See My Friend is badass - one of my favorite album openers now, just a fun song

2. Just Breathe really is a beautiful song - being played a lot doesn't make a song bad

3. I'm still not feeling Johnny Guitar - sorry, I've tried

4. Unthought Known is one of the most incredible songs ever written - was really digging the piano in it today

5. Speed Of Sound doesn't deserve the terrible rap it gets - kind of a pretty song

6. Force Of Nature is vastly underrated - that song draws me in every time I listen to it, absolutely amazing song

All in all, I really enjoyed listening to Backspacer today and that made me happy. I needed a PJ lift today. Had Live On 10 Legs in my hand, and opted for Backspacer instead. Glad I did.

For whatever reason, Backspacer gets a bad rap around here.

It's a nice little record...it's a long way from being as bad as Riot Act. Now, that's bad.

Riot Act owns Backspacer. Can't Keep,Ghost,You Are, Save You, 1/2 Full and All Or None. It's not a complete album but Backspacer doesn't have a song as good as any of these imo.

Definitely wasn't comparing Backspacer to Riot Act. Just stating that I enjoyed Backspacer today and listed some highlights. Anyone else digging Backspacer lately?

Thanks for being on topic in an otherwise derailed thread. Favorite Backspacer tune?

Unthought Known is a great track.

Amongst The Waves is another highlight.

The first three songs are a nice way to start off a record.

I love Backspacer...Unthought Known might just be one of my all time faves (it's so hard to choose just one favorite song though!). Love Force of Nature too.

And I really like Johhny Guitar...but it's mostly just because some of the lyrics remind me of someone...

Amongst the Waves & Just Breathe are very touching.

And yeah, Gonna See My Friend is a good rockin tune!

Def like Backspacer better than Riot Act (though I wouldn't say Riot Act sucked!)

Favorite tracks for me are Just Breathe, Amongst The Waves and The End. Speed Of Sound too but I much prefer the demo version to the album version.

Got to see Speed Of Sound in Hartford last year and that helped me appreciate the song more.

I agree that Backspacer does not deserve the disrespect it gets round here.

Its a nice album... I found it to be a bit bubble-gummy when I first heard it...but like a lot of the other PJ stuff it grows on you. Just Breathe is heartbreakingly beautiful. Unthought Known is great.

I think it just depends on what we're in the mood for at the moment...

There's something in the PJ catalog for everyone and every moment

One of the things that makes it all so great :D

Me too. I like that version. To me it seems like they split the difference between the demo and the album versions. The full band thing worked live more than it did on the record. Eddie played it solo in either Boston or Providence and it was awesome. It is a beautiful song.
