I think Force of Nature, Speed of Sound and Johnny Guitar are standout tracks and the rest is a sort of generic version of PJ. I hear people complain about a lack of Mike, but where the hell is Stone?

UK has to be the most overrated song in the bands catalog around here. Just boring to me and the lyrics.....yak

Bottom of my PJ list all in all.

Yep. Everytime I hear the "gems and rhinestones" bit I cringe. I think the song starts alright - builds like Given To Fly - but then it goes nowhere. Its like they forgot to write the 2nd half of the song.

Unthought Known is the song that "shook the Garden" at MSG 1 last year. Was my favorite off the album prior to the show and its powerful live rendition only reinforced my feelings about it. Also like most of the remaining songs on Backspacer save Johnny Guitar -- not sure why but I just don't feel it.

BTW, Ed told a story about how he wrote Unthought Known the other night at Beacon II... its probably in the fanviews thread. The condensed version -- he was a bit drunk and stoned and staring out his hotel room overlooking Central Park on a gorgeous starlit evening and woke up the next morning to find he had written the song and recorded something on a cassette!

Force Of Nature just recently (a few weeks ago) STRUCK me. I finally LOVE it. Not sure what happened, but I found it going through my head constantly almost everyday and have listened to it A LOT lately. The chorus is fantastic.

Amongst The Waves (along with Force of nature now!) are my faves from the album. Unthought Known, while good, is, as someone mentioned, kind of overrated, but I still like it. I hope to hear all three in the fall!!!

I read he was also hanging with Catherine Keener that night. She played the mom in Where the Wild Things Are, I have always had a feeling this book was talked about that night.

For me that song fits perfectly into the premise of the book, which is one of the greatest kids book ever.

As for the other debate here, I side with Riot Act, much stronger album than Backspacer. Not a fan of booms and feel many of the songs on Riot Act would be better without the piano or whatever the hells he plays.

But with that said Unthought, Speed of Sound, and Force of Nature are great songs and the best part of Backspacer.

The same thing happened to me with Force Of Nature a couple of weeks ago. Bought the San Diego '09 boot and after listening to Force Of Nature on it I was blown away by just how good it sounded. Its actually made me like Backspacer a bit more!

I listened to it a lot when it first came out but never really got into Backspacer so I pretty much put it away for a while. For whatever reason, I started listening to it again very recently and now it's in pretty heavy rotation for me. It's kinda my "go-to" PJ album at the moment. (Something to do with the spring/summer vibe alluded to earlier in the thread?)

Maybe it's not as deep/complex as their other stuff, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. And no, I don't prefer it to the first 5 albums, but it's definitely my favorite since Yield.

Add me to the list of those who aren't feeling "Johnny Guitar" though. Maybe if I catch a show where they play it live, my opinion of that song will change.

  • I love backspacer and i love how light it is but i really hope their next album is a little more complex and harder to digest like a binaural, riot act

Oh, and did anyone else buy the vinyl at Target for the nostalgia factor? I thought it would take me back to my youth to buy a record at a department store.

It really didn't work out that way for me. It just felt like I was buying something at Target.

Force Of Nature is amazing. It really struck a chord with me as well. I went through a couple of weeks last year where I listened to that song multiple times a day. Absolutely brillant song.

Monkeywrench/Republic records is making the classic Pearl Jam album "Backspacer" available to all retailers for the very first time! Originally released on September 20th 2009, the album contains 11 tracks including the hit single "The Fixer"

also, the lyric to end the song kicks, it's one of the songs where the lyrics grabbed me first
