There is no public transporation from Chicago to Alpine Valley. You will have to rent a car or car-pool with someone that is going. You will have the same issue from Milwaukee.

People from all around the Chicagoland area make the trip up the Alpine for various concerts every year. Most think of it as a Chicago-area venue even if it is probably a two hour-ish trip there. The real issue is the after the concert since like it does take a while to get out of the parking lot and after a long day, it is a tired drive back. It can be done everyday and many will do exactly that.
    Thanks!
I have checked google maps and from Chicago is almost 2 hours trip, and 45 minutes trip from Milwaukee. Maybe is easier from Milwaukee, right? Although I also want to spend few days in Chicago.

PS: during those days has any kind of sport league (NBA, NFL, MLB,...) started?

Baseball will still be going. The following weekend is when the NFL starts.

At the beginning of September the baseball season will still be going so Cubs, WhiteSox, Brewers are in the area. NFL season will have started if there is no lock out. NBA and NHL will not have started. Seeing a baseball game is your best bet.

Only preseason football is going on. Easy to get tickets but a complete waste of time and money unless you can get them for free.

I prefer to see a baseball match at the Cubs stadium, and it would be nice to see again drunk Eddie singing "Take me out to the ball game" :P

The Cubs are at home vs the Pirates that weekend(if it's Labor Day weekend) and the White Sox and Brewers are on the road.

  • I live within half an hour of Alpine... True there isnt any any public transportation, however; It is very common for a group of people/bars/clubs/maybe even churches to book a private bus company to take them to and from the venue. They allow you to drink on the bus, and bring grills etc... and they park right near the gate. They also will stop wherever you want along they way. Just something to think about. Not to expensive either. Probably a few hundred bucks / 50ish people if it were organized right???

Alot of times, and the cheaper route is that its a school type bus w/out a bathroom. It would be very easy to organize a group of people to group up and pitch in on a bus from any community within 60 miles of the venue. If/when its announced send me a pm and i can help find a bus service if needed.

If someone is worried about bars/restaurants around there venue...there are tons. After all , it is Wisconsin, the drinking capitol of the US. You might not find them in a search, but they are all over the place, in the middle of nowhere. A busdriver will know dozens of places to stop otw. Bars in the middle of nowhere are part of the "Wisconsin charm" just ask anyone from the chicago area. Would be fun for someone used to barhopping in a city.

Mukwonago is a nice area and easy access to I-43. I've never stayed in any of the hotels there, not even sure where they are to be honest.
That's where I have a room reserved. The site said it's 14 miles away but I was just wondering if it was decent. Thank you! :)

Which hotel is it? I was in the area today and I heard that Hwy 83 was under major construction north of I-43.

Alpine is basically between Elkhorn and East Troy and I live in Elkhorn. I can tell you that the Hampton Inn and AmericInn in Elkhorn will be the two nicest hotels. The Hampton is basically brand new. The Crossroads Motel is not a bad place at all and is the closest to the venue (although Elkhorn is not big, they are all within 15 mins). The Thomas Motel is an absolute dump, don't stay there unless it is a last resort.

Like a previous poster said, there are plenty of bars around, you just have to be willing to mingle with some harmless locals. I would definitely recommend the Hampton if you can get a room there. You are within walking distance of Culvers/McDonalds/Cousins and also a grocery and (more importantly) liquor store.

If this does happen during Labor Day, that just so happens to be the weekend of the Walworth County Fair that takes place in Elkhorn. Lodging could be a little bit more in demand due to this. Also, if you're staying for the weekend and have some time to kill, go check out the fair and get a cinnamon roll from the Silver Dollar Bakery. You will NOT be disappointed.

I booked a room at Country Inn & Suites, based on its proximity to Alpine Valley. Any locals have any info on that place? Not going to be in the hotel room much, but just curious. Thanks!
  • I'm looking at some other bands that are available around that date...

Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon, Neil Young are all currently not booked to tour for that weekend. Assuming that one or two of these bands join PJ along with Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, is Alpine Valley large enough to accomodate the massive crowd that will be sure to want to come?

Matt isn't going to play 2 sets, so you can pretty much rule out Soundgarden.

No, but if you've seen how exhausted he is after a PJ show you would know that he isn't going to play another set.

Well, I kind of hope it is at Alpine, since I live in Mil-town and it would only be a 40 minute drive, but I am also kind of hoping it is in Chicago. Is there any chance PJ throws a curveball and has this fest at Soldier Field? It would just be way more convenient for everybody with hotels, travel, location, etc.

Also, from the looks of it from the 04/08/11 Walworth County Today, Alpine will allow camping this year w/75 sites limited to 6 persons a site and two cars. That just won't be enough IMO.

Thats what i have been thinking even before the Alpine Valley rumor. Why not Soldier Field? Chicago is a big city with plenty of hotels and has a major airport so people can fly in from around the world. Don't count out Soldier Field just yet (wishful thinking Fingers, toes and testicals crossed)

And for 2 or 3 days worth of trampling? I highly doubt Soldier Field is an option for this. However, I would be on a plane to see them play Wrigley in a heartbeat!

Well if there is a football season, the Bears are home on Thursday September 1st so that pretty much ends the Soldier Field idea.

The Bears have a home preseason game that weekend(Labor Day Weekend). You can officially forget about Soldier Field. And before you suggest Wrigley Field, the Cubs are at home against the Pirates that Weekend(Labor Day Weekend)
