A new scholarship is being offered in Texas, but only white men with a 3.0 grade-point average can apply.

The "Austin American-Statesmen" reports a Texas nonprofit group called the Former Majority Association for Equality is behind the scholarships.

Texas State University student Colby Bohannan says he launched the group after returning from the Iraq war to find there were college scholarships for women and minorities, but white males were left out.

Finally White Males will have an equal opportunity to educate themselves.

about freaking time! as the mother of a 17 year old white male who is entering college come september - 'bout effing time! we have searched quite a bit of scholarships and there are tons for girls only, spanish only, african american only, irish only, italian only......... the list is ridiculous and my son can't qualify for like 99%! but of course you know some one is going to get their panties in a bunch about this and they'll have to offer it to 'everyone.'

I agree. It's perfectly okay to give out scholarships exclusively to certain groups but say it's for white males only and people go nuts. What's the big deal anyway? The people offering the scholarship can give it to whomever they like, they're the ones forking out the money.

I hope your son get's the best education.

But a question, The highest paying and most powerful/influential jobs in Texas are still held by white males mostly.

How would one balance that equation? Perhaps find out why it's like that, then maybe we can come to a better understanding in regards to a White only Scholarship.

Are White males in Texas better qualified? Perhaps, if that's the case then maybe the time is not yet right for a White only Scholarship? Well until the field is truly balanced?

with all the other minority and female only scholarships you would sure think the opportunity to balance the equation has been here for quite some time now so no offense but I'm going to have to call bullshit on this.

yeah yeah yeah white man's burden, right??

you forget who has held the power in academia the last few hundred years.

no, it couldn't be because historically it was mainly only white males who were the only ones allowed into colleges. women were not readily accepted into public colleges, hence the creation of women's colleges. and let's not forget that it was not until the 1960s where a black woman could even enroll in the university of alabama. white males are still the majority in this counrty, so as a result they would take more of the scholarship money. i have no issue with minority groups having their own scholarship funds. if historically all scholarships were given to whoever was the most qualified then we would not have had to implement things like this.

do you think the most qualified are getting a fair opportunity for colleges with the current way of doing business
with minority and women only scholarships ? or is just a way to even out the books.

I have no problem with minority only scholarships. They are neccessary. But the last time I checked not all white Texan males were Republican oil barons. Texas has several towns listed among the worst places to live in the US so if someone wants to hand out scholarships where's the problem?

For a long time, some of the most-qualified were denied the right to a good education and the less-qualified took their spots.

I am normally not one to get in on race debates, but I don't understand the issue here...there are scholarships for all things and all people...it really is up to the administrators of the scholarship to make sure that the most deserving "white" male gets the scholarship...like the eddiec said, there are poor white people too who need scholarships like this, but I guess I always think of Appalachia when i think of people that fit that mold, I guess I have a different perception of Texas than the reality of the small town life they have there...
Realistically all scholarships should be available to all people, but if someone wants to put stipulations on the money they give out, well then more power to them.

    ok
lemme see if i got this
white men were the only ones with college educations for hundreds of years
white men reaped all of the benefits from this for hundreds of years
minorities and women suffered the consequences of this for hundreds of years
white men are still today are by far in the majority regarding salary and position
and we have people here visibly upset with minorities and women receiving scholarships
    sad

r u kidding me? i live in the here and now and in my 'here and now' everyone is struggling including white males - and i have 3 of them to put through college! just because years and years ago white males were considered "privledged" certainly doesn't mean that's the case now. everyone is struggling - my son can't apply for a shit load of scholarships because he is who he is - white male. and not for nothing -- he had to 'know someone' to finally land a minimum wage job yet i know plenty who are minorities whose kids are 'eligible' for tons of programs and internships because they are not 'white.' i see quite a bit of reverse discrimination.
