WWS... How the Hell did Ed know?
It was not widely reported, if at all, that there were questions surrounding the friendly fire death of Pat Tillman. It became clear that there was a massive cover up after Pearl Jam was released.
How and why did Ed know to pick Pat Tillman as an example of how fucked up the USA government was with this war?

So WWS is about a guy that was killed by friendly fire?0

I think it's a coincidence. WWS could be applicable to anyone who has died fighting in Iraq.I smile, but who am I kidding...0

Pat Tillman was just one example.... but I didnt' interpret WWS that way. Interesting read of the song though.0 -
As I recall, Ed has mentioned a few times in interviews that the song was about Pat Tillman.

Sounds like the interviewer just asked if it was about Tillman. Ed only said it was about him and every other soldier. Never said it was specifically about Pat at all.0

Ok I don't have the "proof" in front of me at this moment that is required to restate a recollection from 2 years ago.
It never ceases to amaze me how absolutely anal people on this board are. If I had known that during cross examination I was going to need the quotes right out of Ed's mouth I would have saved them.~!~ Peace ~!~ Love ~!~ Pearl Jam ~!~0 -

I'm not saying one way or another, I never even heard of Pat Tillman...but since you affirm it's about him, and no-one else seems to recall anything about it...
it is reasonable to ask you to point to the 'mentioned a few times in interview' more precisely since no-one else seems to recall said interviews.
you started the thread, it's up to you to flesh out your theory.0 -

Actually, I remember that the song was about Pat Tillman as well. Like the original poster, I don't know exactly where it came from, but I can remember it being said in the interview. Tillman was a pro football player for the Arizona Cardinals who decided to give it all up and join the military and go fight for the US in the war. Then he was killed in combat, and later on the details came out that it was friendly fire that killed him. I don't remember timelines or anything like that, but I do distinctly remember that it was about him. I saw an interview with Ed somewhere. I never really thought of it in terms of the song being related to the friendly fire thing, just that he died in war. That's an interesting thought though.0

Pat's family knew something wasn't being disclosed about his death at his funeral, and said so. There were always friendly fire rumors floating around.0

anyone who read the daily paper knew after the incident that something was fishy about the pat tillman death...
and with regard to PJ Lukin's post, yes... there has been mention in interviews that the song was inspired in part by this case, for those of you asking for transcripts or what not, they are out there if you want to look for them...but this relationship has been noted over the years both here on the pit and also with interviews with Edlooking for 2 to Columbia...

I thought this song was about Pat Tillman as well. The football player who left the NFL to join the army. And then was killed by friendly fire or something....to that effect.0 -
Call me dumb, but what part of the song references friendly fire?Yield!
