What record stores?
They went the way of the do do...
The local record stores some of us have in our cities... and also online record stores like amazon. I'm not sure about play.com and cdwow.com as I believe they are located on the island of Jersey, which is excluded from the EU tax zone, which means that we have to pay VAT when we receive the package in our EU country, unlike amazon in the UK or Germany.
play.com is awesome for Uk buying....and definitely no VAT...HMV online is based in Jersey too
Well play.com and the other online stores located in Jersey are definitely subject to the EU tax rules because they are on Jersey, which is a tax-free area (=doesn't belong to the EU tax zone) but also a part of the EU. Here's an example from the Finnish customs webpage: A private person in Finland buys DVD's or CD's from a webstore located on Jersey for 43,47 euros. The VAT is calculated as: 43,47 * 0,23 = 9,99 € and thus the buyer don't have to pay VAT because the VAT doesn't exceed 10 euros. The same goes for the USA and I always check that the price doesn't exceed this limit of 43,37€ which is about $59 with today's exchange rate.
It's strange if you say you have to pay VAT for products valued at a bit over £20 and still don't pay any tax for products bought from play.com or hmv.co.uk. Maybe UK and Jersey have some sort of tax agreement as Jersey is part of the UK? I believe the example with Finland and buying from Jersey or the US goes for every other EU country except for the UK, but with their own policy on when VAT is collected.
I'm not a majority here as I live in Japan. So maybe you are not interested to know this....
Shipping Super Deluxe Set to Japan is US$129.42!!! The most expensive.
To our nighboring countries, for example, South Korea it costs US$71.96 and to China US$ 83.13.
What makes this difference????

Prices will be inclusive of VAT. So prices listed on HMV & Play are all inclusive - no extra surcharge (at least for shipment to an EU country - I've shipped to France, Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain and Italy with no 'extras'). That is why one would have expected the price listed with Sony was inclusive.
The Channel Islands, though not part of the EU, are considered as such when it comes to free trade of goods (an agreement between the Channel Islands and the EU).

Off topic totally, you live in japan right? is there a standard japanese release of live on ten legs with Obi that isnt the SHM CD version?
Can you please explain the sudden price increase for the Pearl Jam Super Deluxe box set for the VS/Vitology re-issue? It was first listed as 120EUR, where now it stands at 150? And the extra 30 euro is explained as VAT which is impossible in the EU/Belgium.
Response:
I'm glad to provide you with the information regarding the variation in the charges of the product "Pearl Jam 1993-1995: Vs./Vitalogy Collector’s Edition Box Set". Please note that international orders are entitled for VAT/Duties. As you're order will be ship as an international order VAT/Duties are entitled in the price, so for this reason the variation of price is being displayed when the product is being ordered.

Don't really want to be another one complaining about this product but as a vinyl collector this isnt really all that good.
Super Deluxe, way too expensive. Only good thing is the Live at the Orpheum 2LP so its rubbish that its only available in the box.
Most people wont even have a deck that will play the casette.
Doesnt seem like the unreleased tracks from the CDs will be on the RSD
vinyl version of Vs or Vitalogy either or it would surely say.
Vs has still been in print for ages so whats the point in yet another pressing if there is no extra tracks.
At least Vitalogy is a 2LP.
Maybe someone should have asked the fans what they wanted.
Me:
Vs LP with the unreleased tracks plus an alternate take on the sleeve plus a download $25
Vitalogy LP with the unreleased tracks plus an alternate take on the sleeve plus a download $25
Live at the Orpheum LP including the 6 extra tracks plus a download (ten club exclusive) $25
All these could be available on CD as well.
Unfortunately box sets are just not value for money. And why as a ten club member I have to read about the forthcoming releases on the website, why not a priority email.
I ordered the Deluxe edition and it clearly states that if you order now you will receive 6 bonus tracks not on the CD. Does anyone know when you get those songs though? Will it be around the ship date?
I still don't understand why 10c can't take care of the international shipping themselves! Seems like things would be much easier that way. I can't even order the super deluxe box to my country. I also don't know if Israel does VAT on things ordered from abroad.
I emailed whatrecords last night after realizing I could not order and Tim replied within less than 30 minutes:
Hi Rafie,
I'm waiting for Sony to confirm that I can sell it.
Cheers
Tim
For now, I agree with Dimi. Looks like the easiest solution is to have it shipped to someone in the U.S. and have them ship it to me. My sister lives in Hawaii and I checked how much it should cost to ship to me. Even after the double postage (first from the 10c to her and then from her to me) it would still cost around $40 less then shipping to Greece (closest country available to me) through sony.
Still can't believe I met Mike Mccready at the Guggenheim and got a pic with him!!!!!

I still don't understand why 10c can't take care of the international shipping themselves! .
Probably because of the debacle of the Ten set. They listened but unfortunately it has backfired. Maybe Sony will let other retailers sell the set and we will have more choice of suppliers to suit our needs.

They did the same thing with the Drop in the Park show. I actually see it as a better value than the Ten box, which cost a similar amount of money. At least with this box we receive two albums along with a show, and even though one could argue that buying the Ten box also nets you two albums (remixed and not) that doesn't cut it for me.
I can understand the tape hate. I'm only 21, so obviously I was not an active fan when they were doing the Self-Pollution Radio broadcasts. Having it on the medium of the time is a really awesome throwback, at least to me.

The casette: A medium of the time that doesn't sound that good, wears out many many times faster than a vinyl record and also the medium that gave us the first portable music player: The Sony Walkman I listened to the casette that came with the Ten box the other day and it doesn't sound that great but I guess that the original demo casette didn't sound that great either. It's no hi-fi but it sure is nostalgic in a way. I'm fine with the Monkeywrench radio casette even though there's better sounding formats...
And what comes to the Orpheum concert I think that the complete concert should be included in the box as a download code, no matter if you pre-order or not! And for these prices it should be a 24bit 96kHz flac!
Someone may have already posted this question but I noticed that the 'buy' button is no longer on the Vs/Vitalogy page. Is there a problem with the site as I wanted to order the boxset...

i'm a vinyl collector, and i can't afford this at all right now (i work part time at minimum wage), but i think it looks so great that i'll try to save for it and hope to pick it up within a year, maybe for a little cheaper, as i did with the ten box.
i really don't understand the complaints - there are cheaper stand alone alternatives. i read an interview with ed talking about the ten re-issue, and he seemed extremely conscientious about it... wanting to put out something special and comprehensive but also knowing most people wouldn't be able to afford it if they did, so they ended up going to a lot of effort and creating several alternatives. i;m surprised that anyone who loves pearl jam and also loves record collecting wouldn't love this.
also, i don't want alternative covers - there is already lots of extra artwork, and the 'vitalogy' cover is perfect, and 'vs' already has an alternative vinyl cover. i'm sure most people have a tape deck. and if not they are very cheap - it is a tape because this medium reflects the times and that people taped it off the radio.
take a teenage riot to get me outta bed right now...

here it says that: "Value-Added-Tax-free imports from the Channel Islands are exports of goods from the Channel Islands on which value added tax (VAT) is not levied due to the operation of an EU tax relief called Low Value Consignment Relief (LVCR). LVCR is not limited to the Channel Islands and applies to all imports into the EU from countries outside of the EU...."
"Channel Islands are not part of the European Union but are part of the customs territory of the union. This means they do not charge VAT on purchases but there is a free movement of industrial and agricultural goods in trade between the Islands and the Union...."
"The Channel Islands offer the most convenient location for selling goods VAT-free into the UK by mail from outside the EU and have been more successful than any other offshore location..."
"When goods are imported into the United Kingdom from a non-EU territory, goods are generally subject to a VAT (currently 20% for most goods). However as a result of EU Council Directive 2009/132/EC, an optional exception is allowed on shipments of a low value in order to speed up the transit of low value goods which might otherwise be delayed by customs and also reduce the cost of tax collection where it might not be practicable. This administrative relief is known as Low Value Consignment Relief (LVCR). The maximum allowed value of the goods for which the exception applies is set by the state applying the exception, and can be set between €10 and €22.[5] Member states which allow the relief must ensure that it does not cause competitive distortion or allow VAT abuse. The UK has set the limit at which the relief applies to €22 (which is £18 at the exchange rate agreed upon by the EU)..."
The Wikipedia text wrote that "Many or most of these are shipped from the Channel Islands, although they are almost always controlled by UK-registered parent companies". Is play.com then a UK or Jersey company if it would be controlled by a UK registered parent company. Amazon.co.uk is for sure based in the UK.
I most certainly get the impressions that Jersey located companis sell their products tax-free to the UK and other EU-countries, but what I don't figure out is how the LVCR works? As I wrote before Finland doesn't collect the VAT if the VAT part stays under 10€, which means that the value of the product including shipping must stay under 43,43€. In the Wikipedia text above it says that "the maximum allowed value of the goods can be set between €10 and €22".... It would be interesting to hear how other EU countries than UK collect the VAT when you order from the US or Channel Islands (Jersey)

I agree the covers are perfect, but as someone who bought the originals at the time, it would good to see them do something different for new vinyl pressings like adding the extra tracks. The TEN 2LP reissue for me was worth it with the 2nd LP and new sleeve as I already had the original pressing. As mentioned Vs has remained in print for years so not much point in buying another copy if there is nothing especially new. The 3cd is looking best at the moment . I have no complaints at all that there is vaious alternatives to buy depending on the price you want to pay but for vinyl lovers its not great. At what will end up costing £200 I cant afford to love the super deluxe. Lost dogs and the Greatest hits were great value on vinyl, unfortunatly add on the word box set and you add on another £50 to £100.
Someone may have already posted this question but I noticed that the 'buy' button is no longer on the Vs/Vitalogy page. Is there a problem with the site as I wanted to order the boxset...

As someone who was a teen in the 90s. We hated cassette tapes, when CD prices and Players became affordable, the use of cassette tapes declined rapidly. Especially when Car CD players got better at not skipping.
By '95 CD's were probably already dominating over tapes. So I would say CD was the medium of choice when self pollution aired. So the fact it's being released as a casette doesn't really gel with the era (allthough alot of people were using tapes in '95, it was definitely on the decline, as CD was so superior).
Tapes were more a thing of the 80's and early 90's.
As for this boxset, I'll buy it, but I keep waiting to see if it'll be release domestically here in Canada, because the shipping from ordering from 10c is a bit steap (40 bux?!?!). I bought the 10 super deluxe and could of saved money buying it domestically.
I was talking to a buddy today about the reissues and the thing that jumped out at me, here at 32, is I can vividly remember not being able to sleep the night before Vitalogy came out. I had just turned 16 and could not wait to drive around and bleed my eardrums. Now I'm buying the reissue. Pretty crazy how time sneaks up on you...

Yes and no. In 95, tapes were on the decline except for one thing. Few people, at that time, could write music on a CD. I remember I was still using tapes when I needed to record music.

Thats a good and valid point. I think I paid over 400 dollars for my first burner in '98. Some I knew paid much more for one the year before that.
The problem was in '95 I'd already put a cd player in my car which pretty much rendered tapes useless to me :( Couldn't have the best of both worlds at the time.

Especially when you heard the difference between both tape and cd.

It's still there for me...

~80$ because I'm not from the US......is this really a PJ product, or just a Sony MoneyGrab???!
