agreed. i can't ascertain why this particular discussion was bumped, unless it was to just stir things up. it was over pages ago. i hope this does not turn into "death penalty redux"...

some people say god bless you, some don't....some welcome the blessing from a stranger, some don't. i can't be bothered wasting the energy to think about it...
the pot was being stirred when the thread was started and people added to it. sorry it was resting well when i stumbled across it. it is wrong to revive a thread?

i keep forgetting this is the home of the m train
i never said it was wrong to revive a thread. never. i am sorry if you took my post as implying that. it was not my intention to offend you.

  • why all the anger and violent suggestions? I started this simply to ask if anyone felt the same way. Some do, some don't. Look at the first page. All very light-hearted and even slight embarassment that I felt this way. I don't think anyone's getting all bent out of shape about this but you. Despite what you and GF think, there was no fishing for religion bashing at all. It never is. Sorry some will go to any lengths to get defensive about something. Some always think it's always about religion bashing. I just find it odd that we correlate a bodily function with God. Do you say a hail Mary when you fart? Didn't think so.

Calling names and suggesting violence is not necessary.

some things are worth being upset over. that isn't.

    Well it is pretty stupid.
The need to put other people down because you don't agree with them is ridiculous actually, and you probably aren't a very happy person generally. So I agree with you TA.
people are being put down for saying something pollite
    that's all it is

someone sneezes... someone says (god) "bless you" and the tension builds
    the tension builds
oh my god, they said "(god) bless you" to me... i am outraged and uneasy @ this moment
my skin is crawling and i feel like screaming and i am needing to get away from this person
but i sneeze and i sneeze and i sneeze and they keep on blessing me and god and god and i sneeze
and i am upset about it and i feel my blood boiling...

    what a dick

next time they sneeze they should be kicked in the face

if anyone is offended by another person saying "God bless you"

just create a tshirt that says "no God blessing needed here." you can only wear it when you have a cold.
live and let live...unless it violates the pearligious doctrine.

Without having to go through the whole thread again, I think it was explained why the 'bless you' after a sneeze - bubonic plague and sneezing being a symptom (thus a blessing when sneezing), soul being thrown out of the body with a sneeze (guess it would have to be a pretty big one!) and the 'bless you' sort of counter-acting this, etc.

Then it just became part of the language, with the religious symbolism losing it's meaning. Just something one says, a very banal expression in the English language.

I'm sure if farts had ever been a symptom of a mass killer disease in the 'old' days or if they thought when one farted, they lost their souls, we would also be saying 'bless you' everytime - as long as they were not silent farts.
  • I know the history of it all. obviously, I was trying to brighten the mood a bit.

Hahaha...it's funny that you think people show outrage at silly things...and then skip the fact that people are upset when someone says "God Bless You" to them. ;)
i'm not skipping anything, the thread was bumped after a couple of months and i was responding to the comments from today.

if it makes you feel better i will say i think it's silly when people get upset after it's said to them too.

gosh i'm glad we cleared that up, could've been a disaster of biblical proportions.
