Yes, children in this country have a right to a 12th grade education.
See, the way I see it is times change. There was a time when that 12th grade education was all that was needed for a career. Not so much anymore. While I certainly don't have the answer it seems perfectly reasonable to look at the possibilities of providing up to a BS degree for all students (or at least the opportunity to get one without finances getting in the way for them individually).
but the only problem with providing cheep or free schooling is eventually the state is going to need money and have to raise costs on education. and then we have what we have going on in england right now...
I don't think university should be free however, i think there has to be more opportunities for grants, scholarships. don't fool yourself , well known schools have a lot of money. but at the same time, i think we as people have to understand that not everyone can go to a UCLA or Harvard. Community college are also affordable ways of getting an education and i find that people look at community colleges like they are for dumb people.0 -

I'm always amazed when people take out loans to go to an out-of-state school or private school when most states have several great options that are subsidized by taxpayers. If you are an Indiana resident and you think it's better to spend $30K a year at Notre Dame instead of paying less then $10K to go to Indiana for business major, you should probably pick a different major because running a business for profit probably isn't in the cards for you.
A guy I work with is sending his kid to Northwestern for engineering when he could just pay a fraction of that cost and send him to in-state Purdue University ... and Purdue has a nationally recognized program that offers more diversity! But his wife is all about status and she couldn't stand to send her kid to a lowly state school. Oh well, I guess you can tax stupidity.Be Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0 -

Seems stupid to leave the state and a good engineering school like Purdon't for Northwestern.hippiemom = goodness0 -

They don't ... some people I know do, mainly just a sports team cutdown. It has a great engineering school. I considered it, but choose to stay in state at an equally good school in my opinion.hippiemom = goodness0 -

Actually, Harvard doesn't charge tuition to students that come from low-income families. Instead, the students work summer jobs and pay the university a portion of what they earn. Of course, you still have to be smart enough to get into Harvard in the first place, but it's a good idea. And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.0 -

Satansbed began namecalling, so I replied in a PM. Then "Sea" sent me a PM saying I could get banned for name-calling- even in PMs. So, I refrained. What's so wrong w/ that? Some people here act like this is your own private club... Last I heard, as long as my check clears, Pearl Jam says I'm welcome... So take it up w/ Ed if you don't like it.

Wow! I didn't know that. thats great. In Canada, higher education is subsidize by the government for people with status in Canada. if your an international student you pay alot more.0 -

We're actually having some interesting debates about community colleges in Louisiana. Like most things education-related here in the Pelican State, the system is a bloody mess. We have entirely too many four-year universities here (around 15 for a state of only 4.5 million people), especially when the state produces such a low number of college-ready high school graduates.
The answer to that should be community college - it's cheaper, and you have the opportunity to get yourself to college level (if that's your goal) - but community college classes weren't transferable to the universities. You could go to Baton Rouge Community College for two years and then try to transfer to LSU only to find half of your credit hours don't count. So, LSU signed a partnership with BRCC, streamlining the process and making it easier for BRCC students to get in to LSU.
The response? An editorial in the LSU student newspaper ripping the idea, saying it completely devalued an LSU degree because only morons go to community colleges. And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.0 -

Why do you feel that higher education is reserved for people with status? I have 2 nieces who are attending very fine schools, neither of their parents are rolling in $$$$$, just your average working people, now my niece's will be in major debt upon graduation, but they are still able to attend.

democracy does not function without an educated citizenry. the US is a great example of that.
as such education should be a right, and not a privilege.0 -
Whether it is a right or not, it is an investment in our citizenry. A more educated population is just going to do better all the way around. Everyone benefits from people being more educated.R.i.p. Rigoberto Alpizar.

All I've read mentioned is University or College!!! What about skilled trades? The trades have been sadly neglected by governments and many areas are at a shortage of the skilled trades. The governments subsidize post secondary education, why do they not subsidize apprenticeships the same?I have certain rules I live by ... My First Rule ...
