Community college are also affordable ways of getting an education and i find that people look at community colleges like they are for dumb people.

Actually, Harvard doesn't charge tuition to students that come from low-income families. Instead, the students work summer jobs and pay the university a portion of what they earn. Of course, you still have to be smart enough to get into Harvard in the first place, but it's a good idea.

Wow! I didn't know that. thats great. In Canada, higher education is subsidize by the government for people with status in Canada. if your an international student you pay alot more.

Satansbed began namecalling, so I replied in a PM. Then "Sea" sent me a PM saying I could get banned for name-calling- even in PMs. So, I refrained. What's so wrong w/ that? Some people here act like this is your own private club... Last I heard, as long as my check clears, Pearl Jam says I'm welcome... So take it up w/ Ed if you don't like it.

Having people "pegged" is a nice way of saying you think I'm brilliant, I guess... 8-)

uhhh ... no, you say it yourself ... seriously, just own up to it ... you bought another membership and you are having another go at this forum ... i don't see the need to continue on with this charade ...

We're actually having some interesting debates about community colleges in Louisiana. Like most things education-related here in the Pelican State, the system is a bloody mess. We have entirely too many four-year universities here (around 15 for a state of only 4.5 million people), especially when the state produces such a low number of college-ready high school graduates.

The answer to that should be community college - it's cheaper, and you have the opportunity to get yourself to college level (if that's your goal) - but community college classes weren't transferable to the universities. You could go to Baton Rouge Community College for two years and then try to transfer to LSU only to find half of your credit hours don't count. So, LSU signed a partnership with BRCC, streamlining the process and making it easier for BRCC students to get in to LSU.

The response? An editorial in the LSU student newspaper ripping the idea, saying it completely devalued an LSU degree because only morons go to community colleges.
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

I had a few friends go to community colleges before transferring to 4-year schools and they said it was easier then high school. They spent the majority of time playing basketball and grades were not an issue. I can understand why a credit transfer may ruffle feathers.

Why do you feel that higher education is reserved for people with status? I have 2 nieces who are attending very fine schools, neither of their parents are rolling in $$$$$, just your average working people, now my niece's will be in major debt upon graduation, but they are still able to attend.

Foreign students should pay 100 % of the cost, if you can get more, then the school should if they use the difference to keep tuition down.

democracy does not function without an educated citizenry. the US is a great example of that.

as such education should be a right, and not a privilege.

Whether it is a right or not, it is an investment in our citizenry. A more educated population is just going to do better all the way around. Everyone benefits from people being more educated.

All I've read mentioned is University or College!!! What about skilled trades? The trades have been sadly neglected by governments and many areas are at a shortage of the skilled trades. The governments subsidize post secondary education, why do they not subsidize apprenticeships the same?

that's a good question that i can't answer. I do however know that some apprenticeships program do pay their student and that might be a reason for teh lack of funding by the government.

i do not condone posting a pm and yes it is wrong, but what is done is done.
did you read that pm? i am sure that if anyone else had gotten a pm that vile they would have considered posting it to show everyone what kind of a person we are dealing with here. i guess i am just saying that the pm and posting the pm were both inappropriate actions...

but back on topic, if this country placed the emphasis on education instead of glorifying self promotion, getting rich quick, and being a hustler, and rewarding attention whores we might move up in the world. look at japan and china. education is a cornerstone of their society and culture. look at america where you are considered a dork if you excel at school and if you happen to be born rich you get your own tv show, an example of this is paris hilton, who is a dumbass who happened to be born rich and famous yet contributes nothing to society at all. a couple of years ago a local casino here paid her $300,000 to show up for 3 hours and help open up their new vegas-style club. and thousands of people waited in line to see her. what a joke...and if you are self centered and conniving enough you get to end up on shows like the real world, jersey shore, survivor etc and you get rich and famous that way. nobody does anything legitimately anymore because it is easier to drop out of school and earn a living as a hustler.

if we emphasized education more culturally, then in a few generations we might not be a society full of idiots.

the first person i ever saw post a PM (which the mods deleted and was under his old banned user name) is the same person you are so concerned that satansbed posted a pm from.

    oh the irony.

What irony...any time I see anyone post a pm I think their actions are wrong and they are being a crybaby.

I'm concerned whenever anyone does something slimy like that. Aren't you? Or do you only care if it's certain posters?

it was not what a reasonable person would consider a 'normal' private message. and of course a normal pm should not be shared in an open forum. i'd hardly call posting the deranged abusive rantings of someone "slimy" or being a "cry baby". more like a warning to others that this is what you are dealing with and ignore this person.

lol and i'm the last person anyone can accuse of favoring posters. i don't care who you are, i call it as i see it.

I dont think education should be a requirement, i think if you choose not to go to school there should not be any fall out from your desicion, high school's get money for there rate of gradution, higher the rate usually more money you get from goverment programs and such, one of the reasons high schools are so concerned with truant kids and so quick to inform parents about absents and lateness, they wan't every body to graduate,
to make themselves look good. I think if a kid decides he/she has had enough of school they should be able to walk away unharrassed. This is soppossed rto be a free country and our pets have more rights than our kids.

I see your point but to play devil's advocate most kids don't understand what they may be throwing away by dropping out. So maybe we should force em to go, at least until their 18?
