interesting take on education. So I ask you what this article points to at the end
Is this a violation of human rights? More importantly, do we have the right to education, or is it simply a right for the pursuit of education?...meaning should the government be required to provide education, or just simply not make laws that would hurt someone's ability to become educated? hopefully that makes sense.
I know this is from the UK, but I think it is an applicable question across the board

in the society i believe in ... i believe everyone should have access to a base level of education which is essentially a bachelor's degree ...
i think education up until secondary school (high school) should be free and mandated by the government ... post-secondary education being highly subsidized ...0 -

the subsidizing part is the only part I have a problem with, and it isn't because I don't think people should get help, just that I always wonder if there wasn't such a deep pool of federal loan money, would universities charge nearly as much for their services? But on the other hand if they didn't charge as much would they be able to get the best and brightest to teach...it is a pickle for sure.
I will say this, I would much rather the government pay for kids to go to college rather than kids to go to war.that’s right! Can’t we all just get together and focus on our real enemies: monogamous gays and stem cells… - Ned Flanders

yeah ... i wholeheartedly agree ... i am conflicted because my understanding are many universities are flush with cash but still aggressively target alumni dollars and such ... in the end, money should not be the reason why a kid can't get a post-secondary degree ...0 -

Yes, children in this country have a right to a 12th grade education.0 -

See, the way I see it is times change. There was a time when that 12th grade education was all that was needed for a career. Not so much anymore. While I certainly don't have the answer it seems perfectly reasonable to look at the possibilities of providing up to a BS degree for all students (or at least the opportunity to get one without finances getting in the way for them individually).hippiemom = goodness0 -

but the only problem with providing cheep or free schooling is eventually the state is going to need money and have to raise costs on education. and then we have what we have going on in england right now..."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

right, costs definitely go up, just like anything else, I really feel a complete ovehaul of how we view education in the states is necessary. No one is really prepared for life when they graduate high school. We need to advance the learning earlier so the later years can be spent on teaching not only the importance of free thinking, but also vocational training. Why on earth does someone need to go to school after high school to become an electrician...we should be able to choose those things in school and be prepared when we are done. If we stop spending money on silly things we can start providing a real education system to our children...which in turn will create highly functional adults who hopefully can find gainful employment earlier in life which might lead to a decrease in the amount of people who need government services to survive...I don't know, but I do know something has to change, kids 15 years from now will be 40,000 in debt by the time they are done with higher education...the government should provide all it takes to get a decent job in the world, and right now a college education, or some form of secondary learning is darn near required.that’s right! i also think that schools should prepare kids, seniors in high school, how to balance a damn checkbook. my roommate freshman year of college overdrew his account and bounced like 20 checks the first few weeks in school....school didn't teach me that, my mom did lol...but kids going away from home for the first time to school or those going into the workforce out of high school need to be taught the basics to prepare them for the very real financial issues they need to know about."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln
