Riot Act Irony

Kinda funny that the album that most ppl(not me) think is the weakest PJ album is riot Act, yet the touring of that album is arguably the best tour they've ever done.

    yea i think a lot of the riot act songs sound much better live. plus i think the band seemed less pissed off than in 2000 tour. like them playing 'alive'.

    everybody wants the most they can possibly get

    Personally I thought the 98 tour was the best, but everyone has their favs.

    Ed was always pissed until some time around Riot Act or Binaural. I wonder why it changed? i like him better now.

    Early 90's does it for me...can't recreate that ferocity...but yes the 03 shows were fantastic.

    i agree here...nothing beats the early 90s...nothing can match the amount of intensity the band put into the shows...

    i like em all, the last tour is always the best for me. i like to watch how they grow and change. so as it stands, the 06 tour is my fave.

    maybe not pissed, but in a different mind set than 03'. i am comparing the oo tour from touring band, 1 show at jones beach and a couple boots to the 03 tour when i saw them twice and a couple boots. so i'm not an expert but ed seemed more into cheering up the crowd and being happy with them as apposed to the more standoffish way he gave great and agressive shows in 2000. also remember 2000 tour was denmark. everyone was at peace in 03 and i loved it and it came at the right time in my life. i met my girlfriend of five years the day i went to a show at pnc in holmdel nj on 7/14. looking back that week of seeing pearl jam was one of if not the best week in my life at a time when everything else sucked. off topic but i love this band.

    Eddie's voice was at its weakest during the 2003 tour, so I don't agree.

    I like that different things about every tour, good and bad that makes them unique. Makes listening to PJ boots a greater experience.. for example

    (in my opinion)
    Ten VS tours -
    GOOD: great energy and sound (craziness)
    BAD: not variety in sets due to not many albums

    Vitalogy
    GOOD - great rockin vibe, setlists taking shape
    BAD - EDs voice a bit too rough for me

    No Code
    only listened to a few,
    GOOD: nice because of the no code tunes played, good sound, ed calming down?
    BAD: i dont know?

    Yield
    GOOD: fresh new sound with matt cameron. Songs sound cleaner and tighter
    BAD: Many older tunes lost from setlists (matt cameron new?)

    Binaural
    GOOD: great warm sound on guitar, drums and vocals, great setlists with binaural rares
    BAD: More older songs went missing from sets again, sad vibe cause o' denmark tragedy in US shows.

    Riot Act
    GOOD: the start o' a new attitude towards live shows, great setlist mixups! some old tunes return, eds communication with crowd starting
    BAD: some random setlists dont flow too well, some energy lost? eds voice weak in songs, bad why go?!

    Canada South America shows
    GOOD: fun setlists, great vibes, new energy, effort put into making setlists flow, eds voice picking up
    BAD: I dont know? boots sometimes sound funny?

    AVOCADO
    GOOD: setlists flow real well, more old tunes revived, more energy, sound is real tight, band is rockin out more?
    BAD: setlists lost some randomness, riot act/binaural forgotten about!

    ive thought of that too. for years ive heard riot act is their worst but the 03 tour was insane.

    Just about every tour is "arguably the best tour they've ever done." But I would never personally argue that the Riot Act tour is their best. Of the tours I have seen them on, here is how I would rank them:

    1. Yield
    2. Vs.
    3. Binaural
    4. Avocado
    5. Riot Act
    Liberace was great on the piano but he sucked on the organ.

    I like different tours for different reasons. Arguably the greatest strength of the Riot Act tour is that this is when PJ really started mixing things up setlist wise. Both with the setlists and with the vibe this was a very loose tour. It was also very political. Some sets went much longer than anything they had ever done. Breaking curfews every other night. Anything could happen on any given night. The Mansfield Experiment. State College. Bu$hleaguer and The Uniondale debocle. Chronological show in Holmdel, Arc 9 times, etc.

    In addition to legendary shows like the Mansfields, MSG I, and State College 2003 also had hidden gems like Buffalo, Champaign, Missoula, and Albany.
    Deep, Why Go, All Those Yesterdays, Satan's Bed (ha), and Blood were all
    brought back.

    They tried a variety of non-traditonal openers like Alive, I Am Mine, Cropduster, Arc, Present Tense, Do The Evolution, Love Boat Captain, Crazy Mary, Better Man, Animal, and Last Exit.

    2000 had been a very stressful tour after Roskilde. As a result the shows were intense and darker. Come 2003 the guys seemed to be in a good place and were really happy to be playing live. The shows reflect it in both their length, onstage demeanor, and their willingness to mix setlists up.

    I saw them in Boston on the 06 tour, they seemed like they were going through the motions and playing just a show, there were no extended jams/tags (that I remember) on songs like Even Flow and Better Man, lack of "rare" songs or covers (I swear they play RITFW or Fuckin Up EVERY time they're in Boston.) They just seemed to lack energy. that was the only show I saw that year, but it was definitely the worst.

    2000 tour was the best. ed's vocals and the entire band was on point throughout.

    IMO....the '98 was amazing.......when they made their comeback after everyone called them dead in the water after No Code. The '98 tour was a reconnection and they started to have fun.
    Like a word misplaced...nothing said...what a waste
