Riot Act Irony

Kinda funny that the album that most ppl(not me) think is the weakest PJ album is riot Act, yet the touring of that album is arguably the best tour they've ever done.

just a guess but maybe becoming a father took some of the angst away.
i agree here...nothing beats the early 90s...nothing can match the amount of intensity the band put into the shows...

maybe not pissed, but in a different mind set than 03'. i am comparing the oo tour from touring band, 1 show at jones beach and a couple boots to the 03 tour when i saw them twice and a couple boots. so i'm not an expert but ed seemed more into cheering up the crowd and being happy with them as apposed to the more standoffish way he gave great and agressive shows in 2000. also remember 2000 tour was denmark. everyone was at peace in 03 and i loved it and it came at the right time in my life. i met my girlfriend of five years the day i went to a show at pnc in holmdel nj on 7/14. looking back that week of seeing pearl jam was one of if not the best week in my life at a time when everything else sucked. off topic but i love this band.

(in my opinion)
Ten VS tours -
GOOD: great energy and sound (craziness)
BAD: not variety in sets due to not many albums
Vitalogy
GOOD - great rockin vibe, setlists taking shape
BAD - EDs voice a bit too rough for me
No Code
only listened to a few,
GOOD: nice because of the no code tunes played, good sound, ed calming down?
BAD: i dont know?
Yield
GOOD: fresh new sound with matt cameron. Songs sound cleaner and tighter
BAD: Many older tunes lost from setlists (matt cameron new?)
Binaural
GOOD: great warm sound on guitar, drums and vocals, great setlists with binaural rares
BAD: More older songs went missing from sets again, sad vibe cause o' denmark tragedy in US shows.
Riot Act
GOOD: the start o' a new attitude towards live shows, great setlist mixups! some old tunes return, eds communication with crowd starting
BAD: some random setlists dont flow too well, some energy lost? eds voice weak in songs, bad why go?!
Canada South America shows
GOOD: fun setlists, great vibes, new energy, effort put into making setlists flow, eds voice picking up
BAD: I dont know? boots sometimes sound funny?
AVOCADO
GOOD: setlists flow real well, more old tunes revived, more energy, sound is real tight, band is rockin out more?
BAD: setlists lost some randomness, riot act/binaural forgotten about!
ive thought of that too. for years ive heard riot act is their worst but the 03 tour was insane.

In addition to legendary shows like the Mansfields, MSG I, and State College 2003 also had hidden gems like Buffalo, Champaign, Missoula, and Albany.
Deep, Why Go, All Those Yesterdays, Satan's Bed (ha), and Blood were all
brought back.
They tried a variety of non-traditonal openers like Alive, I Am Mine, Cropduster, Arc, Present Tense, Do The Evolution, Love Boat Captain, Crazy Mary, Better Man, Animal, and Last Exit.
2000 had been a very stressful tour after Roskilde. As a result the shows were intense and darker. Come 2003 the guys seemed to be in a good place and were really happy to be playing live. The shows reflect it in both their length, onstage demeanor, and their willingness to mix setlists up.
that was an insane tour!
it was their St. Louis comeback show, hadnt been here for 7 years and they played one hell of a set list
Set List: Oceans, Hail Hail, Brain Of J., Spin The Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Given To Fly, In Hiding, Corduroy, MFC, Wishlist, Nothingman, Improv into Habit, Even Flow, Daughter/(Institution by Suicidal Tendencies), Immortality, Black, Alive; 1st Encore: Do The Evolution, Jeremy, I Got Shit, Better Man/(Save It For Later), Fuckin' Up; 2nd Encore: Yellow Ledbetter
You're joking right?
Ed was great in '03. You couldn't tell the difference in Blood from that tour and Blood from '95. I specifically remember standing there in Houston, hearing that song and thinking, you know, if Ed hadn't cut his hair, I could swear this was '95.
Couple that with his newfound ability to do shit like Arc, and that tour was pretty bad ass from a vocal perspective.
IMO, 1998 and 2000 was maybe the worst (by ed standards) because he seemed caught between "grunge growling ed" and "ed who actually knows how to sing." it was a little off-putting.
for the least they could possibly do
And see, I saw them five times that year, and they were great. Those SF shows were pretty intense ... Mike smashing guitars, Ed flying all over the place, Jeff jumping up and down, Ed going out into the crowd for Last Kiss.
I was impressed by the energy these old motherfuckers were still able to summon.
for the least they could possibly do
2003 Riot Act tour- I don't know what he changed, but it sounds 1/4 as good. And on Black, it sounds like he's playing with a toy guitar from Wal-Mart for $16.99.

No, when I listen to Go and Breath from that tour, it sounds really bad to me. There's no intensity at all.
It's funny that you mention Blood because that and DTE are the only aggressive songs I can think of that he sang really well that tour.

Eds voive was great during the 2003 tour, so I agree.
yes... wonder where they would have gone if denmark didnt happen....

I'm going to disagree with you on Breath. There are some great versions of Breath from that tour. And unlike in 2000, he actually remembers all the lyrics.
Go, I'll give you, but it has nothing to do with Ed's voice. It's obvious to me some of those older songs (Go, RVM, even Even Flow) don't mean as much to the band any more, and they just kind of go through the motions during them. This wasn't just a product of 2003. It was that way in '06 as well.
Sometimes, I wish they'd stop playing them if they don't want to.
Really, every tour post-2000, Ed's voice has been pretty damn good.
for the least they could possibly do
Matt Cameron wasn't on Yield. Jack Irons was.
Edit: My Mistake. we're talking about touring
Does the 2005 tour count as Riot Act,that was incredible too, those South American fans could teach the rest of the world a thing or two about enjoying a concert.
As for the Avacado tour, saw them in the Point in Dublin and did not live up to my expectations(hate to sound ungrateful cos I'm not)which I think stemmed from just how great the 2003 shows were. I dunno, hope they they worry more about just making a good, honest album and tour with the next one rather than 'making their best album since Ten and VS.!' as was the tagline for that album and tour. Not to bring their integrity into question,I just think they're happier doing what they want to do with their music and judging by a lot of the 2006 shows(Reading being a notable exception) they need some sort of morale boost.
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.
