the death penalty

I'm not an eye for an eye person, and I don't believe in the death penalty. However, I also think that some prisons are a little too cushy and comfortable, which affects recidivism rates - prison isn't much of a deterrent. I'm all for making the prison experience as miserable as possible for people who cannot be reformed, and people who commit certain atrocities. And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.0

And while it may be cushy as someone put it I think the true punishment is not being with those you love or care about or just want to be with. As cushy as it may sound to some people, you're being held captive and that's a pretty harsh punishment IMO.0 -

GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK! POOR FUCKING MURDERERS GOT PUT INTO A NICE COMFY SLEEP AND THEN THEY STOPPED THEIR HEARTBEAT. THEY SHOULD'VE GOTTEN A FUCKING BULLET BEHIND THE LEFT EAR A LONG TIME AGO. PICTURE THESE MEN RAPING YOUR DAUGHTER FOR AN HOUR, SMASHING YOUR DAUGHTERS TEETH OUT AND CRUSHING YOUR DAUGHTERS THROAT BY STEPPING ON IT WITH A BOOT. AND THEN THEY GO AND BRAG ABOUT IT TO PEOPLE THEY KNOW. THESE FUCKING GUYS GOT OFF TOO EASY AND YOU PEOPLE WITH YOUR POLITICAL CORRECTNESS MAKE ME FUCKING SICK. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOU PEOPLE STAND UP IN FRONT OF THIS YOUNG GIRLS PARENTS AND TELL THEM THE BULLSHIT YOU SPEW ON THIS WEBSIGHT. THEN AGAIN, FOR SOME REASON, I'M GUESSING MOST OF YOU WOULDN'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT.0

I think, for the reasons you outlined, that they may be a deterrent to people with close ties to society... but I don't think loners tend to care about whether or not they're around loved ones. It's also problematic when you can enjoy a higher standard of living in prison than you can in a lot of inner cities, ghettos, and trailer parks - that's why the recidivism rates are as high as they are in certain places. At least in prison you're guaranteed a bed, a roof over your head, and three square meals a day - and in a lot of places you also get TV and numerous forms of entertainment. That beats living in a place with no food in the pantry and the heat turned off because you can't pay the bills.
Interestingly enough, in New Zealand they're planning on banning smoking in prisons in the hopes that it will lower rates of offending. An article in a newspaper quoted a few gang members saying it will make them think twice, because they'd rather not commit violent acts than be forced to quit smoking cold turkey lol Of course, the same article also featured gang members saying it will make prison violence go up, because wardens would still be allowed to smoke so inmates would just start assaulting wardens to get a cigarette. And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.0 -

That's a good question - theoretically they should be, but I don't know how well that works in practice. And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.0 -

In addition to food & shelter, I know some people return to prison for the healthcare. To me that tells us that we should provide these necessities to people who aren't in prison too.0 -

humanity? these guys don't deserve humanity. they don't deserve to wake up in the morning and see the sunshine. they don't deserve to be released out of their cage to be fed a square meal. they don't deserve to have a yard break where they get to work out or play basketball. they don't deserve to relax and read a book. they don't deserve to be tucked back into their little cages at night. they don't deserve the pleasure of being able to sit down and enjoy taking a good shit. they don't deserve to lay their heads down on a pillow at night and go to sleep. they don't deserve to be able to dream. and they don't deserve our taxes....THEY DESERVED TO DIE! Who says you need any kind of "authority" to judge people? We're all entitled to judge whoever we want and I know that because we all do it all the time. I'm about as liberal as most people get, but I can still think of a ton of situations where I could personally end another's life and not feel the least bit bad about it. If I were to see some poacher taking the life of a bear, lion, or wolf, I would be hard pressed to not bury that motherfucker in a shallow grave. If I knew I'd get away with it, I'd be happy to pull the trigger, but not before I wounded them severly and introduced myself to let them know who was killing them and why.

You make it sound so ugly. Our whole fucking planet is in dire straights and I no longer feel compelled to tolerate the problems. Yes, I could. I can't even mention how close I've come. Let's just say there are a few people out there who owe their lives to my wife stopping me.
