Nahh sorry . I was a very devout catholic into my 20's prayed a lot to be saved from the hell I suffered under the church. from sexual abuse from a preist to being beaten by a father who represents nuns to the vatican council. So dont give me your crap about prayers being answered. cause they never were.
It wasnt untill I had faith in myself and my freinds instead of GOD that my life changed that I became the man Im proud to be.
I turned my back on god and found faith in my fellow man.
not in a fictional story designed to control society.
funny isnt it in all areas of the world GODS have developed so that their peoples will do as they are told. so that they will do thy bidding even if its nots gods written will.

I am very glad I was not raised in church, fire and brimstone as the way. For some, as yourself this is a hurdle or a hinderance to overcome.
I sought knowledge on my own as an adult instead of the brain washing that takes place for the very young. It has allowed me to have an open mind when it comes to God. More importantly an open heart because this is where you find God.
In my heart I know God is very pleased you have found faith in your fellow man, this more important than our faith in him. Our love for each other is our greatest gift.
It was the evils of man, as always, that hurt you, not God.
God is there for peace and unconditional love and guidance IF you need him. I see it as you turning your back on religion not God because the two are NOT the same.
This I hope one day you will know and you can return to a friend who never left your side.

Not to come down on you like a ton of bricks or anything, but the way I see you interpret God, do you even need God? I mean, since it seems to you he's that little voice in your mind that tells you to go on and gives you comfort. Wouldn't another concept than God suffice? Since God to many is the christian version where he's basically a judgmental old fellow sitting on a cloud casting continous judgment on us (rarely favourable), it seems your concept is a far way away from that.

I guess what I'm asking is what is really the difference between God (as you outline), and your own mind judging what's good and coping and finding comfort in various aspects of life?

I am sincerely asking btw, not to bait you or setting you up for an attack...

    Peace

Hey not too worried about an attack ;) but debate I'm not good at, I just speak from my heart most times.
Oh yes, I need God and I believe but not in the religions made by man.
He's not a voice that tells me to go on or comfort me although I have found inner peace in my belief of the beyond.
In my life I am working towards a nonjudgmental, unconditional love and believe this is a reflection of God.
I did ask for a miracle, we could say proof, that I was not living here in vain. This miracle changed my life and brought to me where I am today, a spiritual place without doubt that God exists and my soul will journey on when I leave this world.
It is religion that confuses, the description you gave a good example. Religion alienates the logical mind and affronts those who are emotional due to prejudice and contradiction. So people who do not agree with religion feel they can not believe in God. This is not true.
God lives inside us and can guide us and fulfill our needs without entering a church.

I suspected that it was something along those lines. I think we can see eye to eye on a lot of this stuff. Only difference being that I prefer not to use the term or concept of God to be necessary for the "religion of love". ;)

You might appreciate this book I just read on the subject: "The book of atheist spirituality" written by a guy named Comte-Sponville. Not confrontational like some of the others out there, but calmly arguing his position without ridiculing those that do believe in something.

You can have all that spirituality without having God anywhere in it. :)

Thank you I will look into that. Love is the key, the rest semantics. How a person finds the inner peace that brings kindness and acceptance of others is all the matters, whether one believes in a God or not we must work towards believing in each other.
