Eddie announced last night in Portugal *at least* a pause in Pearl Jam tours. Quoting his speech in portuguese "Thanks for coming to our last show. It's not the last show forever, but the last in a long time." (video below)

Some of the lyrics in Backspacer were already giving me the feeling this would be it. And The End it's such a perfect ending...'I'm here...but not much longer.' Is this it? Can it be this was the last PJ show I'll ever see?

    What do you guys think?

I think everybody's reading way too much into it.
Agreed. he says shit like this a lot. I thinkl he said something like that at MSG 2008.

...and at the London O2 show last year...

I was going to say exactly the same.

  • hey, all knowledgeable 10clubbers. give this person a break. it's their first post. surely all of you (or some of you at the very least) thought this very same thing when seeing Parting Ways as the last song, too, no? there was even speculation about it but MANY board members when The End was seen as the last track on Backspacer. It's his first post, cut him/her some slack. Absolutely no reason to call the OP names, jesus. Grow up.

He also regularly says they worked with the venue to have the curfew extended only to end up playing the amount of time they usually do
  • I think it just means that Ed is going to give us another solo effort
  • I remember around the time Backspacer was released there was an interview with Kelly Curtis and he said something along the lines of that he feels that Pearl Jam are only about half way through their life-span. He also mentioned a lot of exciting stuff is going to be happening over the next couple of years and to wait and see.

We already have Euro Boots and Soundgarden to look forward to so i'm trying to stay postive on this one.

Just wildly guessing, but I think they'll take the rest of 2010 off (already July) and probably not doing anything for 2011. I expect they'd be back in 2012, which isn't really that long considering a lot of bands take that long off regularly.

I think Eddie said something like "This is going to be our last show here for quite some time" after Chicago 2 last August...

Eddie just needs to define his time frames. :)

Yeah, sorry everyone its the end. No more PJ, they're gone.

No need to renew that membership - go ahead and let it lapse.

no nothing to do with the possibility of getting better seats in the US, honest guv

This is seriously getting blown way out of proportion....I bet there will be one or two more shows this year. And at least a dozen shows next summer....2001-2002 was their least active years in the decade, and they played 8 shows during that period....

    It's out of proportion.
http://www1.folha.uol.com.br/ilustrada/ ... ugal.shtml ("PJ will take a hiatous from their career.") Folha de São Paulo is the biggest newspaper of Brazil.
My brother just called me saying "It's the end of PJ. How do you feel?"

Ed said that quote in Portuguese. It's not his native language. The same way English is not my native language.
Someone translated that quote for him. Maybe it isn't what he wanted to say.
Please, Kat and 10 C, we need some official words to put an end to this. It's spread all over the world.
Let's say knowledge is a tree, yeah.
It's growing up just like me.

  • In Columbus, OH, he said "I don't know how much longer we'll keep doing this, but the energy you bring to gigs like this makes us feel like at least there would be a reason to."

while I agree that this band is far from over, they are inevitably slowing down, and will eventually stop touring altogether. in the not to distant future, we will only have the rare opportunity to see them. in a few years, these guys will be in their 50's. JHC that makes me feel old as fuck.
  • it's all just different media speculating on the same quote, that Eddie has said countless times before, not to mention others like "see you next year" or "see you real soon" whathaveyou.

"...in a long time" could mean anything. It could mean a year. It could mean 2 years. That's nothing, really, and if it means that we get more studio music or re-releases or the like, then I'm down with that. I'll just take the money my wife and I were saving for the 20th anniversary show and travel to see another band.

I'm convinced this is a ploy from the band members to drive up prices of the memorabilia. They probably all have like twenty copies of Benny hall, some door mats, a few bottles of that Jack lying around and obviously the rinck roinck (sp?) cd. And whatever else you ever really wanted to get ahold of. Tell everyone your taking a break, scare the prices up and have a sell-off! Genious! Ed's probably trying to scrape some cash together for the Creed tour.

"Pearl Jam Publicist Says Eddie Vedder's Remarks About the Band's Last Show "In A Long Time" Are Nothing Serious

As we reported this morning, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder told the crowd at Lisbon's Optimus Alive festival Sunday night: "Thank you for coming to our last show. Not our last ever, but our last in a long time." But despite the ominous proclamation, longtime Pearl Jam publicist Nicole Vandenberg tells us in an email that it's nothing serious. "He says that at the end of all tours, because the tour has ended. The remark may have gotten a little lost in translation."

Pearl Jam doesn't have any shows lined up at the moment, and Vandenberg did not elaborate on any of the band's future plans, or whether they had finished their support of last November's record, Backspacer."
