Yes, this is shorter than an usual PJ show, but this is not shorter than many other bands' shows. And at festivals, they don't have the choice, the possibility, to play longer. There is curfew and rules they are obliged to follow.

I was there yesterday and the show really kicked ass, even if considered as short. 1/2 or 1 hour more would have been good, of course, but I didn't feel disappointed when they left the stage. The energy was good, and the sound was pretty good.

PJ in previous Werchter show wasn't that short, they've also played FestiMad couple years ago, wasn't short. This year HRC wasn't short either.

I've loved... I always do... but the great setlist wasn't targeting PJ big fans. When I see in a previous post that Brother was on the setlist and it's changed... because of the crowd???!!! jeeeeeeeezzzz... the pit sucked..... some folks really enjoying PJ... but the rest... an usual French concert.... !!!

Headliners cannot play the same amount of time than others bands in a festivals, that's why they're called headliners!

So yes, it was really short for a festival headliner…. Not PJ’s fault of course, they did their best for this gig and for this crowd.

Ben Harper, I loved the beginning, Under Pressure, perfect, after Dublin, I don't hope it again. Ben is perfect for the first party for pj.

Pearl Jam, I was just 10m from the scene, 8th rank I think ... Mike side on middle barrier.
It starts Unthought Known, very good opener, original, I love, great starter !
State of love and trust, awesome, just breathe, shudder ... I told me, good thing for the encore to come. Of the earth, now we know it, it's huge, hope it'll be on the next record or EP, porch ... I told me, already in the show, cool, changing !!! what ? They leave the scene, it's already the end the main set, oh shit ...
the encore1, red mosquito, huge, baba o riley excellent !

Very short set, only 17 songs, but we can expect, even if the other thing of techno on the green room (the other scene) during again ... great sounding, good setlist for a fest, I found the public rather good. The group was in a good forme, and they have fun ... really liked the little inventions in French of Vedder. Beautiful place, I liked the shadows of Vedder on the church on the right ... just change the classics, no more Alive, Betterman, Even Flow, yellow ledbetter and don't forget the many other classics, others albums, Binaural, Yield, No Code, ... and It'll be perfect ... oh, It's was perfect, like usually !!!

    Thanks you PEARL JAM, ...

... see you soon in FRANCE, for a Olympia with 3h of show !

    sorry my bad english !

  • It's been a long day, we're in Rome now going to the Heinekin Festival for PJ in Venice tomorrow.

    Arras.

My thoughts on the Arras Music Festival.

I really wish they would of kept the same venue in the actual city center Square. We has booked back in January and the venue change was unexpected, but our fault to not recheck closer to the date, so it was a dissapointment.

(Arras is Beautiful, the Canadian Memorial was epic) (we're from Kelowna, BC)

    Anyways...
So right off the bat, I couldn't sneek my Canon SLR in, got busted for that. So no photos. I picked up a couple Arras posters, as mentioned, I thought the rest of the merch was weak.

Nothing really to do but drink Heiniken and have french fries with Mayo, other Festivals actually have vendors going on during. Thats the gripe I had before I suppose...

Ok, so F*^k " -M- " That was the worst junk I've heard/seen in my life. Sorry to be a downer to any fans, but brutal IMO. Ha, it literally put my in a horrible mood and seemed to drag on forever.

Like many other fans we were also Mike's side, we had a dinky Canadian flag. You probably saw me as I was blocking your views. (Shaved Bald head, protecting blonde wife, lol) Mike seemed to recognize alot of people in the front by the rail. We tried to get his attention, but I gues the 4 inch Canadian flag we took from our front desk of the hotel wasn't cutting it. Poor planning on our part.

I knew the set would be short, it's a Festival. What I didn't expect was the Queen tributes, they were Awesome! I was pumped.

Venice will be our 7th show, and yes it sounds selfish, but I'd love to get the bands attention somehow, or get backstage. We saw people on the sides and I KNOW they wern't die-hard fans. Hell the whole reason we came to Europe was to follow them around. Anyways, even getting the poster signed would be awesome. I thought about putting out mailing address, some postage money and the poster in a tube, and throwing it on stage near the end of the show, when Ed's generally hanging out with the band and exchanging things with people.

    I'm blabbing.

Sum up, it was great, not even close to the energy as was in Vancouver at GM or Ed's solo tour, but great none-the less.

For me by far the less show of the five shows I attended the last 10 days. I was looking forward to the location judging from pictures from earlier editions but upon arriving I was disappointed to find out the organisation moved the festival to another location. Setlist was a disappointment for me, not one "rare" song for die hard fans. I'm sure people who attended their first PJ show had a great time though. Only light sparks for me were Baba o' Riley, Red mosquito and SOLAT. Plus the fact that it was dark for the entire set. I guess France just isn't my cup of tea, cause I also had teh feeling there was a certain amount of energy and vibe lacking.

I completely agree with you. I live in Paris (I'm not French)... I go to a lot of concerts, Frenchs crowds always lack of vibes and energy.

I was with I friend of mine, it was his fists PJ show… for him it was amazingly great. I did enjoy the show, but it was a general-public-type of show… you know, playing all Ten era iconic songs, plus some other singles…

We need a real Backsapacer tour !!!!

    Ah la France
As a french objective guy let me share my point of view.
I was not there on saturday (good friends getting married on the same day), but this show was not on the top of my list anyway, and it was obvious to me that the band play in front of a minor crowd. 2 reasons for that:
    - i hate to say it, but PJ is small in France. The last show in 06 was not sold out and the last albums sold pretty badly. The band does have its core of hardcore fans like everywhere else, but the overall public has forgotten the band since a long time.
    - the Arras program was really mainstream , and for the french audience, the headliner on that day was "M". A french pop/rock singer which sells out all his shows all over the country. Great showman but really shitty songs if you want my opinion.
As a french guy i feel quite ashamed the band doesnt get the recognition it deserves in our country. And when i travel around to see the band i meet spanish, english, portuguese ,german, polish and italian friends, but never french.
I ve been in festivals to see the band in spain and belgium and even if the setlists are stills as short, at least the audience delivers. So i am looking forward Bilbao on friday!

Good points of Alexis G, I agree with those.
It seems that PJ is something special in countries like Italy, Portugal, Netherlands and Germany but don’t have that in Spain, France, England for example.

I was in Arras, and completely agree with this review:
Sets are almost always "short" at festivals. I'm tired of reading people complaining about how "short" the sets are.

I was also disappointed that the show wasn't where it was supposed to be. It promised to be in the old city centre, but now it was in some sort of old military complex.

I was standing at about 30/40 meters from the band, and from my view the crowd looked very entertained.

Alexis, don't worry. I keep meeting French fans everywhere so it's not all lost. Not big groups, but nice people :). I don't go to French concerts anymore after the PJ concerts in 1996 and 2000 where I hated the crowd for being violent and (very) rude, but it's always a pleasure meeting the traveling French. For instance, in our Bed & Breakfast in Dublin there was one boy with his mother who did not know any other French fans. Or in London last year there were two nice boys who got Ed's wine bottle :). But there is not much left online for the French. This link still works: http://pjbootstrading.org/phpBB3/

I dont know why the top act,or headliner,at some festivals play such shorts sets.I saw Radiohead headline 2 festivals.Glastonbury(England) 2003,and All Points West (NYC) 2008.They played full sets, well over 2 hours.Since they were the top act on the bill, they played the longest.Pearl Jam played Bonnaroo in 2008,they headlined and played for 3 hours.Dave Matthews Band play festivals all the time. They are the top act at this years Mile High Festival, again. They will play a full set like last year.I would think the top act on the bill would play a full setlist. We,the fans, are paying top money to see the top act.Bruce played the Hyde Park Festival in 2009.I did not attend, but he played his usual, long, close to 3 hour set.Maybe some festivals dont allow the headliner to play a full set?? I would have been very pissed,if Radiohead played for a short time at Glastonbury 2003.As someone pointed out,FANS travel long distances for these festivals.I flew to England from NYC for Glastonbury 2003.But still, the headliner is really who we want to see. They should play a full set.Peace. :)

No, this is not true, many French fans trip in many other countries to see Pearl Jam, will see here, http://www.pjbootstrading.org/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=27

Me for example, I went to Los Angeles in 2008, just to Eddie, on three days! The dream of my life! I must had to see it.

We need Pearl Jam in FRANCE!

Actually, you're not that harsch: few French people go abroad to see Pearl jam, for two reasons:

    1. Most of French people don't know Pearl Jam (they're generally good at listening to La Nouvelle Star or Star Academy, a kind of French X-Factor. Universal Music France and his producer, Pascal Negre, are really good into decredibilizing rock music and selling their products.

    2. Most of us don't speak English. :(

I lived in France for seven years, my wife is french and I have to say that I only met two people who actually knew PJ not even "fans" just people that remembered them from the "Nirvana " era and that particular song something like "Jeremy".... so yes, there are french fans but is definitely not in France that PJ has their biggest fan base in Europe !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As already said, PJ is not well known in France. Basically our country has some poor knowledge about rock music.
So I'm glad PJ came to Arras even if it was for a short festival set. I will remember this gig for a long time since it was the first one I actually managed to go front row at the barrier, I touched Eddie sweaty hands (I have washed my hands since then :D) and got a pick from Mike, Stone smiled when I expressed my happiness seeing them just in front of me 8-) ...
I was pleased to hear Jeremy and Baba O'Riley : first time out of 10 shows.

Then regarding french fans, this thread reminded me there was a french forum and that I should join it ;)
I think many PJ french fans are touring because I heard some french speaking in Dublin, London and Werchter this tour. Being shy, I didn't speak to any of them  . Also, I have noticed that french are not used to bring their flag in other countries ... don't know why ... maybe because we're afraid of people laughing at us because of our football team

I don't know about all this curfew and the band didn't have a choice stuff.... Does anyone know when the friday and sunday shows ended at arras? My 2.5 hour expectations were based on the main square schedule site:
    http://www.mainsquarefestival.fr/en/pra ... px?id=3862
    Schedules of the festival ground
    Friday, July 2nd
    Doors opening : 04.00 pm
Start of the shows : 05.30 pm
End of the last show : 04.00 am
    Saturday, July 3rd
    Doors opening : 11.00 am
Start of the shows : 01.00 pm
End of the last show : 02.00 am
    Sunday, July 4th
    Doors opening : 12.00 pm
Start of the shows : 01.00 pm
End of the last show : 12.00 am

The show did not promptly end at 1 am. I think this was a choice by the band because they had to play the next night in belgium and the 6th in venice. To me it was obvious eddie was sober (he has been known to have one bottle full of gatorade). Although the show was short, it was one of the better pearl jam experiences of my life. The band sounded great! and the do do dodo dododoo's at the end of black was surreal. It was also fun to hear the french muddle sounds of words they clearly didn't know...they played a lot of ten and backspacer songs, but that's ok, they are both great albums.
  • Sorry guys but this was mostly a disapointing show mainly because it was sooooo short.

this was the 6th time I saw pj (the last time was berlin last year) and it was by far the shortest, as some people said if the gig had been 30mn -1h longer it would have been fine.

I saw them at werchter last time and they definitely played longer than that.

and the crowd was good, it's not fair to blame them, not the best crowd I've seen of course but a decent one.

some friends of mine came to this concert, I kept telling them how good pj was live and their reaction when it was over was ".... already?! wtf?" anyway this may be the last time I'm seeing them at a festival

Hi there and specialy to Melbourne Flower,
I was there and really happy to see PJ a new time.
For Fleur, i am the Sandra's friend witch was looking for you for a long time ;-) ...
The PJ band is not well known in France, for sure it's really a big problem.
I meet a lot of people at work and no one knows them, it is really sad, so i wear as much as possible PJ T-shirts to make people ask to me who is PJ
The Arras festival PJ show was really to short but as someone wrote it : It's a festival.
Nothing to compare to a real PJ show.
    Cheers
    Max
