Evacuation Rules wrote:The new boots suck so far...you can barely hear Stone. When he solo's in MFC, he's the quietest instrument in the mix. Who is mixing these boots? Pete Townshend?
How do they sound in comparison to the 2008 boots?0 -
Equally bad IMO.0

This is what I was affraid of. Is the mixing in-house, or out-sourced? I ask cuz 2006 (Basecamp), I thought did a fantastic job with the mixing. Regardless of the fact that there weren't physical cd's/artwork made for that year. I thought all vocals and instruments were very front and center with just enough crowd so u could hear during sing-alongs and loud applause. I know some people complain that the crowd isn't loud enough, but are u paying to hear the band or the crowd? I know that I want to hear the band mixed in with a little crowd. I also thought 2000 and 2003 were also very good. 2000 getting better as time went on. Then in 2008 the boots which were distributed by Kufala, and all of a sudden the sound quality has dropped tremendously. Is this Kufala's bad or is it the band's people? I only say this cuz since 2008 it seems that the boots just don't sound as good as previous releases. Now, some people are also saying that the Philly shows sound amazing, but to me sound nothing like 2006/2003/2000. The band seems very distant, and not upfront like 2006/2003/2000. Philly sounds very tinney to my ears. Now I don't know if that's because of the acoustics in the building also contributing or what? Now I am no sound professional, I just know what I hear, and what I hear just doesn't sound the same. And a lot of these shows are in the same places. I love pearl jam live and I will continue to purchase the live shows, but I just hope that the mixing and audio quality improves. So I guess my big question is, how can things change so much for the worse in just a few years? Thanks much. LaterFoo4Everlong0 -
Wait til you hear St. Louis. best sounding boot in a long time.
The mixes are being done offsite post show. The New Orleans show doesn't sound as good as the others because it is outside so you might have claim on the sound quality there but you might want to get some ear candles or some q-tips before throwing on the next 4 shows from the tour. They are sounding pretty champ.
We have St. Louis through Cleveland in production right now and will be ready to ship as soon as they are put on sale which should be soon.
We are going to start shipping Philly sets tomorrow as well. Big week.

Then whoever is mixing them needs to learn how to balance 3 guitars. You can barely hear Stone.0 -
I think the KC boot is the best sounding boot since 2003. Everything sounds great! Thanks KufalaStraight down the center for a hot chicken dinner!0

Everyone bitching about the sound quality can just STFU-now. The band is sensitive to your concerns. Why do you think it's taken so long for this set of shows to be released. Listen to Kufala. We all agree New Orleans doesn't sound as good as most, but none of the open air outdoor shows sound as good as most. Go back and listen to Outside Lands and ACL from last year. It's a product of the environment. Bonnaroo is probably the best sounding of the US outdoor festival boots but they spent several weeks mixing that one. And I'm sorry to say I'm in the minority apparently, but I think the new KC boot sounds pretty good too.
We all want our boots. We want them now and we want them to be perfect. Perfection takes time and time has been taken. Kufala has spoken and these boots coming tomorrow will have proven to be worth the wait.
So chill and get ready for four amazing shows!
Peace. Out.

I have always believed forums should be used for discussion, and not all discussion is positive - that being said, I think some of you people have become spoiled with all of these high quality recordings that the band has so graciously allowed for the past decade. To think nothing like this had ever been done before (at least on this scale) when they made headlines back in 2000 - releasing all 72 shows from that tour and putting them in retail stores for everyone to buy at a reasonable price. It was awesome then, and with technology now, it's even more awesome that we can get instant FLAC digital downloads (and of course mp3) or you can get a CD mailed to you in a fairly quick fashion.
So to everybody complaining about the quality - it's only been 2 shows - and I have the KC boot - and think the quality is pretty good - with the only knock being Eddie's slightly flat vocals, if anything. That's not Kufala's fault.
Just relax, and be grateful. If you want to bitch about the quality, then go for it, but just try not to forget that they don't have to offer these - I would hate to have to go back to the days of trading crappy sounding audience recordings.0 -

I am at peace with my lust.....for Eddie.0 -
yeah the only show im interested in getting is buffalo, only because i was there, so i have no problem waiting a little bit for them to mix it to excellent quality, of all the boots i have probably the MSG show from 06-25-2008 is the best sounding.
i can also attest that the philly boot i got is also very good quality."I want to Rock & Roll all night, and part of everyday"

Am I going to be buying a bunch of boots today?0

Guys - COME ON. Please stop complaining! Since when has a little bit of raw sound quality ruined a bootleg? If anything, it adds honesty to the recording.
Additionally, I thought the New Orleans bootleg was fantastic. I wish all outdoor recordings were that choice.
Kufala, you have my seal of approval.Bristow, VA (5/13/10)0 -
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Kufala just the distributor? They have no part of the mixing.
They do provide outstanding service, but I don't think they mess with the engineering of the boots.
And I really hope they're right about STL.0 -
