damn
will flac have better sound than the cd? or are they ="The only thing I ever saw that came close to Objective Journalism was a closed-circuit TV setup that watched shoplifters in the General Store at Woody Creek, Colorado." hst0 -
Equal. Though I'm no audiophile.
A true one can answer that. Superior to mp3? Hell yes. I convert flacs that I buy to VBR for iPod use, which is about as good as it gets for mp3...unless someone else out there knows of something better.0 -
flac and cd should be equal.0
-
was just curious .
it would seem that from what i recall
cd's were always looked down on , cutting off frequency response
then dvd a and sacd came out as lossless and touting supior frequency response etc.
sorta thought the flac format was more along the lines of those.
hmm time to google
according to stereophile magazine:
Basically, if you want true CD quality from the files on your iPod or music server, you must use WAV or AIF encoding or FLAC, ALC, or WMA Lossless. Both MP3 and AAC introduce fairly large changes in the measured spectra, even at the highest rate of 320kbps. There seems little point in spending large sums of money on superbly specified audio equipment if you are going to play sonically compromised, lossy-compressed music on it."The only thing I ever saw that came close to Objective Journalism was a closed-circuit TV setup that watched shoplifters in the General Store at Woody Creek, Colorado." hst0 -

Of course the problem is that MP3 players dont play FLACs and such. You can however download a program called Rockbox that will convert your ipod and other mp3 players so it can play FLAC files.0 -
Wouldn't that limit the amount of songs you can put on your mp3 player/iPod?
I've got about 12 boots on an 80GB iPod right now...all VBR mp3.
I tried using AIFF, and even WAV once...just too much space was taken up.0 -
yeah for sure it would limit available space"The only thing I ever saw that came close to Objective Journalism was a closed-circuit TV setup that watched shoplifters in the General Store at Woody Creek, Colorado." hst0

Then again, if you are listening on your iPod whether you need a lossless file depends on how good your headphones are. It would be hard to tell the difference between 240+ kbps and FLAC on your stock ear-buds. Especially if you're on the bus or subway or listening in the car with the windows down.
If I have FLAC I keep it around as a backup but convert to MP3 for my traveling player or burning CDs for the car."Money is no object," I said, "but I am on a budget."0 -
A common misunderstanding is that the sound quality is based solely in the quality of the file (mp3 vs. Flac) and the headphones used. Not so.
Different MP3 players produce different qualities in sound...the Ipod, for example, is mediocre at best when it comes to sound quality. The new Sony Walkman which is around 100 bucks produces a much higher quality sound. Whats more important to you...the bells and whistles, or a player that is open-sourced and produces the highest quality in audio/video?
When it comes to the best of the best, go with Cowon. They are a Korean company and they are true audiophile experts. The S9 is their breadwinner, although they will soon be releasing the J3 model.
After doing endless research and being lucky enough to test about 12 different players, I went with the Cowon S9....best decision I ever made. No more buying into Apple's bullshit...I can't use Flac without doing a huge runaround. Really Apple? S9 is compatible with virtually all formats for both audio and video...no more converting...thank god! The quality of the screen on the player is stunning as well. It acts as a USB drive so I can EASILY carry all my docs/songs/vids/pics by simply dragging a dropping. No more Itunes...what a great feeling!
With that being said, I still can't figure out why the quality of PJ boots has gone down the toilet, yet the price is approaching double what they were in 03' for a CD. How about we compromise...get back the creators of the 00 or 03 boots and we'll pay 30 bucks a pop0 -

Too bad they only do up to 32gb.
Not enough for FLAC.
Ive used about 55gb on my ipod using mainly 256kps0 -

im just worried about it for source format and home use mostly
even my car stereo set up is too worth less i think to dicern
aac is fine in the car for me
i think ill get flac though , i am a fan of instant gratification
and ive been waiting too long already!!!!"The only thing I ever saw that came close to Objective Journalism was a closed-circuit TV setup that watched shoplifters in the General Store at Woody Creek, Colorado." hst0 -
That's another thing...
We've (as fans) created this sense of urgency when it comes to the boots. If quality mixing and mastering takes time, what's wrong with waiting? When this whole thing started, didn't we have to wait until after a leg of the tour to get them? Granted the volume was a little low, but the mix was pretty damn good. Now it's a mixed bag.
Don't get me wrong, I'm guilty of wanting shows now, now, NOW like everyone else.0 -
well what i heard on PJ ready of the raw unmixed stuff im happy with
it is after all a live show
im not looking for studio mixes and perfection
honestly the fact that it is a soundboard feed and not off a mini cassette makes me happy as can be"The only thing I ever saw that came close to Objective Journalism was a closed-circuit TV setup that watched shoplifters in the General Store at Woody Creek, Colorado." hst0 -

+1 on the S9. I bought the 32gb model a few months back. Being able to play FLAC is awesome. It sounds really good.
I also hate MTS devices with a passion (the ones you need to have a special program to sync to the device), the fact Cowon supports UMS on all their devices, so you can just plug it in, and access it like a flash drive is awesome.0 -
JohnnyGeetar wrote:No artwork came with the NOLA flacs.
I really think the artwork has fallen off since they began this back in 2000. I really liked having the setlist on the inside of the sleeves. That and the $10.98 price for one boot. Those were good times...
EDIT: I do think that the artwork for the 05/06 tours was good, but I'm not big on printing out, and cutting up...wastes paper.
Yea-the artwork looks like boring card board. which is lame, but no setlist either?
How is the Jazz fest boot? I was there so definitely gonna get it, just wondering how it sounded.
Does Ed give a toast to BP talking about their sons/daughters going to NO to help with the clean up?"Before his first step.. he is off again."

Agreed... Every day when I get on I go straight to look to see if any new ones have been posted. Patience is not my strong suit.
Guess I'll just have to keep listening to Kansas City some more.Columbus 2010 - Atlanta 2012 - Charlotte 20130 -
hey, i've never purchased a bootleg before, so i just have a question. Is it like a film of particular concert dates, or is it only a medley from all of them? how does it work? thanks, jen0

Bootlegs are official CD's or downloads of one show (all songs in order). Audio only. For the 2010 tour, you can order a separate bootleg for each show.0 -
I'm downloading Philly 10/30 and 10/31 to tide me over now... This is a sad addiction, help could be needed.Columbus 2010 - Atlanta 2012 - Charlotte 20130
