Any chance you could update this? I saw it shot all the way up to #88 after the SNL performance. And I guess that's on the strength of late Saturday night / Sunday sales. Could be another good week coming up I suppose.
I don't have the numbers yet, but I can tell you that it sold about 4,000 in Week 24 (#168) and 7,500-8,000 (#88) in Week 25.
Some people talk as if they are irrelevant, but it's already gold in a day of pirating and online individual song purchases. That's rockin'.
Kansas City 6/12/03 ** Kissimmee 10/9/04 ** Atlantic City 10/1/05 ** Denver 7/2/06 ** Denver 7/3/06 ** Chicago 8/23/09 ** Chicago 8/24/09 ** Kansas City 5/3/10 ** Dallas 11/15/13 ** Oklahoma City 11/16/13 ** St. Louis 10/3/14 ** Tulsa 10/8/14 ** Chicago - Wrigley Field 8/20/16 ** Chicago - Wrigley Field 8/22/16 ** Oklahoma City 9/20/22 ** Ft. Worth 9/15/23 ** Atlanta N2 5/1/25
i'm going to predict 10,500-11,000 copies this week.
That would put it in reach of the top 50. Incidentally, I was in a Target today and the album was on the bottom shelf and there were tons of them. Another bit of marketing genius there-- hey, the band just played a semi-high-profile gig and people may come looking for the album. Let's put it at shoe level with nothing to call attention to it.

Platinum in Canada means 80,000+ sold...and with approx %10 of the population of the US...it means Backspacer is selling 1.6 times as much per capita....

Odd how it sold less than the previous week. When it was in the top 20 on itunes the whole week. Although the album was out of stock for online purchases at Target. Maybe that was a part of it?

Hey, Braveheart, we use commas in our numbers in the States. Get with the program!
But seriously, I have updated the original post for Week 26. The "SNL" appearance translated to roughly 5,500 additional copies sold. As I have pointed out before, very few platforms generate huge sales boosts: Grammys, Oscars, Super Bowl halftime, an Oprah recommendation. Not "SNL." Not Letterman. Not Conan (although the audience for Conan's first show was big enough to have allowed for a possible exception, except that the album wasn't out yet).
Funny how there is a negative fan reaction when the band "sells out" by doing things with Target or whatever, but fans still root for the album to sell a ton.

It's not really a contradiction. Just because you sell a lot of records, it doesn't mean you sold out to do it.

with only target, itunes and independent stores. I'd say that's pretty good.
