Pearl Jam - The New Reality

Over the last year or so, I've been seeing a noticeable backlash against the band from their seemingly hardcore fanbase. In other words, people here. Extremely critical on every facet of what they do. Some have been able to roll with the punches, but they are in the minority. It really hit me last night while watching SNL and being very disappointed with their song selection for the performances.

Many years ago, PJ would buck the system and do whatever the hell they wanted to; it seemed selling records was very low on their priority list. They were young, angry, and hungry to tell their side of the story. I was young and angry once too. But over time, especially when you have a family, you tend to lose that anger (or at least you should), and your focus tends to get reevaluated.

Some think it is the sign of the times, with Bush being gone and Obama being in office, but I think it's more than that. I think they have taken a step back and realized that life doesn't have to be a constant fight against something. Sometimes you just have to embrace it as it is.

People didn't like the way Backspacer was promoted, apparently the band sold out by doing that Target commerical. People didn't like the lead off single, The Fixer, upset that is was too radio-friendly.

However, after seeing SNL last night, and also re-reading the Spin article, it has been made crystal clear to me. They have finally realized that this is not only their passion, but also their job and what puts food on their tables.

I was disappointed, like I said above, with the song selection last night on SNL. I wanted some hard rockers, something upbeat. We got one Ed number (with Mike just standing there like a statue-isn't it a BAND performance?), and a mid-tempo number. Ick. But you know what? They aren't doing this to shock people with playing something no one has heard before. They are there to promote their new record, and what better way to sell records than to play what the majority of viewers would dig? Then those people go out and buy the record, and also hear the big rockers like GSMF and SS, and possibly explore the back catalogue.

They are no longer here just for the amusement of their hardcore fans. They are getting older. They aren't touring as much, and in this day and age, it's a no-brainer that touring is every band's bread and butter. So they have to compromise. Do magazine interviews with a reporter hanging out at your house for 2 days, do commercials, do late-night TV that isn't just Letterman, etc. I have no problem with that, and if I do, I am fine with them not caring that I do.

They have finally evolved with the realities of the inudstry and many of us have been unable to accept that. But personally, if Ed was still the anti-social recluse of 1996, I'd probably be thinking "hey, Ed, here's my shrink's card, it might be time".

I'd like to introduce you to the new Pearl Jam. I have accepted this new reality. I mean, really, it's not our band, it's theirs, and always has been. We just wanted to believe they were ours.

The bottom line is, do you like the music? If you do, stay for the ride. It's been a doozie so far. And I think it's only going to get better.

I'll be sticking around for the long haul. Hopefully you will too.

    nice post.

I've purchased my one way ticket and am not planning to got off this ride for a long time.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of
arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to
slide in sideways, BBQ sandwich in one hand, cold beer in the other,
body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "Woo Hoo what a
    ride"!

Great Post. I feel the same exact way. Please people don't turn this awesome thread into a major fight. This is the truth and the band could do whatever the hell they want. I will always support them no matter what and love their music and that's how all "real" fans should feel.

I'm with them 'till the end, which I hope is a loooooooooooooooooooong time from now. But yeah they have changed tremendously, especially in the past ten years since the Binaural tour ended. I've seen them in '96, '97, '98, 00', '03, '06, '08, '09, all of those tours were different, the change has been slow but constant. However it was '06 at the Camden show that it hit me, I don't know how but the show, the music, the characters/personalities of Pearl Jam seemed different to me. Not bad, just different.

And even though I'm a huge Dave Abbruzzese fan, I'm not one of those to lay the "blame" or excuse for Pearl Jam's change at the feet of Matt Cameron. Go back and listen to "Live on Two Legs" or any of the Binaural Tour bootlegs (especially the North America leg II series), Matt Cameron kicks F'n ass on those performances. The change is Eddie, physically, emotionally, creatively.

and I, nor anyone else, should have a problem with that. Musical taste is too subjective to ever be right.

Amen brother! What people don't seem to get is that, if these guys still were doing things the way they did in 1994, they wouldn't be advertising with target, they'd be working there.

I've grown up with this band since 1991 and I've questioned alot of the decisions they've made, but the decisions they've made have helped them outlast their peers from the 90's. I must say that I am very happy that they're the band that made it.

i was watching and was honestly happy that they're still a band and sounding great. i wanted some rockers but i still enjoyed it. i've heard unthought known live a few times and i think this is the best performance of it by far.
i like the music. and i'm always right
    :)
  • Great fucking post. I agree.

I think if their new album were too similar to ones previous, people would bitch about the fact that its always the same... never try anything new. blah blah fucking blah.

People are always going to bitch. People feel that the band owes them tour dates.

Take it for what it is. Great fucking music, deep fucking lyrics, amazing fucking concerts.

    I'm in.

Excellent post. Very well thought out and well said.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the direction they are moving and am rather frustrated by some of their decisions. Many of the ideals, choices, and intangibles that made me proud to be a Pearl Jam fan are fading away and my "holier than thou" soapbox keeps getting shorter and shorter in discussions with my Green Day buddy or niche punk friend. This makes me sad.

However, I still love the music, and still hang on every tour rumor.

You are right that people need to realize that these guys are not angsty twenny-sumthings in the mid '90s. The are in their mid-40s, they have wives, they have kids, that have new perspective in their old age ( ;) ). I'm only 31, and lord knows I see things and act completely differently than I did when I was 25...

It may not be what we like to see, but it's reality.

PS: I think Unthought Known was a good choice... the world needs to hear that song. :) Just Breathe... eh... placating to the masses who are already in love w/ that song... Supersonic would have been great... if this was 1998...

Everyone, hug your families and be happy that you're still arguing over Pearl Jam's latest career decision 20 years after the first graced the airwaves!

A-freakin-men! I am in, it is subjective (most of the new lp is great), the shows are incredible, and I am indebted!

Haha, I agree with you, but this part of your post reminded me of what the snarky douchebags at Pitchfork had to say about BS:
Virtually the whole record settles into the same formula the band's been dutifully churning out since the dawn of the millennium-- lively but almost utterly hookless riff-driven hard rock. Lather, rinse, repeat.

nice post..but u have to understand fans getting old too,so complain more for nothing
im ok with the band,i want to travel to see them live,to buy their music..i dont care the name of the company they sell tix or the store the sell their music,if the play commercial,or cut their hair..i deal with what i have in front of me..so,they announce only one show for a year ,lets say in china?..i just search for flights and hotel and see if i can afford it..they sell 10c tix?i wait for pre-sale hour...no score?- go ticketmaster..announce cd,lp release..i go in good section..i wish they come to Greece more, but dreaming is good..but i can live by trying to see them, buy their music, love them with positive way..getting angry all the time, complaining, wait to see something u dont like and bitching isnt in my way of life in general, not only in pj issues

Over a 20 year period most of us are naturally going to evolve and change . . . and I'm not sure you can expect everything to be the same as the early and mid 90s. I like who they are now and then!

Also, what you need to do to promote and independent record release in 2010 is much different than the reality of early 90s.
