Wasn't the album released on Sept. 20? I don't get why Oct. 10 would be week 1... I must be missing something...

The chart is dated in conformity with the issue date of Billboard. The October 10 issue hits newsstands on October 3 and its album chart covers the sales week from September 21-27.

Technically, the album's September 20 sales should have been reflected on the October 3 chart, because the album came out on the last day of the sales week. I don't know why they were not.

I'm interested to see what the numbers are like after you've added **** Hosted SNL.
  • Do you know where Riot Act is right now? I remember Riot act getting to where Backspacer is about now pretty quickly and then taking forever to cross 500k. This one (Backspacer) seems to be the Tortoise, slow but steady. Also, I was curious if you know what RVM sales are through now. UpHereSoHigh used to post all of the releases weekly and his job changed and he no longer had soundscan access. I remember it getting close to 1 million and I bet it crossed over by now. Curious if you had that info. Thx for posting all of this.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river

I would love to see added to the OP all of the albums "current" numbers of sales, just as a marker for comparison.

    Estimated current U.S. sales are:

    Ten: 9,790,000
    Vs.: 5,942,000
    Vitalogy: 4,723,000
    No Code: 1,407,000
    Yield: 1,600,000
    Binaural: 750,000
    Riot Act: 509,000
    Pearl Jam: 708,000
    Backspacer: 500,000

Actual totals through November 2008 were:

    Ten: 9,578,314
    Vs.: 5,931,898
    Vitalogy: 4,715,263
    No Code: 1,404,672
    Yield: 1,596,624
    Binaural: 747,809
    Riot Act: 506,811
    Pearl Jam: 702,278

"Ten" is now nearing 9.8 million due to the reissue.

The projections above are based on the following facts:

As of July 2009, "Pearl Jam" had sold 706,000 and "Riot Act" had sold 508,000. From that, you can interpolate that, other than "Ten," the sales numbers for the other studio albums are not much higher than they were in November 2008.

"Vs." sold 28,000 between September 2006 and November 2008, "Vitalogy" sold 17,500 in the same span, "No Code" sold 7,000, "Yield" sold 10,500, "Binaural" sold 5,000, "Riot Act" sold 6,500 and "Pearl Jam" sold 68,000-- its numbers are higher because it was still within a few months of its release in September 2006.

All of this suggests that "Backspacer" should end up somewhere around 575,000 barring something unusual happening that boosts sales.

you can find reasonably accurate US sales as far as gold/platinum totals on riaa.org/index

go to gold and platinum, then searchable database.

according to them and it is not always up to current date:

ten 13X platinum (includes the two reissues)
    vs. 7X Plat
    Vit. 5X plat
    Merkin Ball- gold
    No Code- 1x Platinum
    Yield- 1 X platinum
    LO2L- 1X platinum
    Binaural-- gold
    Riot- gold
    Lost Dogs- gold
    Avocado- gold
    RVM- 1Xplatinum
    Back- gold

    last kiss single- gold

    SVT- platinum
    tourning Band- 1X platinum
    immagine in cornice: gold
    Live at garden 3X platinum
    Mirror Ball- gold
    ITW- no gold yet

32 million albums in the US so far roughly, not bad

    http://www.riaa.org/goldandplatinumdata ... =tblTopArt
pretty cool list, but not updated too often

this is true. If you look at even the biggest albums like Lady Gaga's "The Fame," it's only sold about 2.5 million albums with all those huge singles.

I think Backspacer is probably their biggest album since Yield in terms of commercial success. The Fixer was huge on rock radio if i'm not mistaken. 500k in 2010 is at least a million or 1.5 million about ten years ago.

I doubt they put out albums or tour becuase they need money. I'm sure they passed that point long ago. If they really need money, we'd see a lot more tour dates.
