man, this is great to read. i actually have tickets to the jammies, that would be sweet if anyone from the band or Danny shows up to accept the award (he was at the NYC premiere of it, so I'm assuming he's a New Yorker).

as for some of you hating on jam bands, maybe you should open your minds a little more to some of these guys. honestly, i dont think PJ live travels too far off the core heart of what jam bands are. plus it's great music and a shit ton of fun. do yourself a favor and try a jam festival this summer, you certainly won't regret it.

    Why not..voted!
The worst enemies of music? Money and Mathematics. Combined with music, they both do the exact opposite of what they're supposed to do. Money makes music cheap, mathematics makes it stupid and predictable.

  • I thought this thread was going to involve voting for whether or not PJ 'jammies' should be added to Goods. :(

If that were the poll, I'd vote yes. :p

Totally different deal from PJ, progressive, wacky time signature changes, wierd modal riffs. I bought my first PJ bootleg in 93 and saw my first show in 96, been on the train since. Rarely do I find something new that excites me. Umphrey's Mcgee are one of them. Ironically, I just caught them in Asheville last night. Incredible show. You can dl a AUD for free and archive.org. I despise a lot of jambands, but some are inventive. And a bunch of lot kids really dig PJ. That's why they're up for a jammy and were on the cover or Relix awhile back.

UM isn't even really a jamband though. They get as much from Floyd, Zappa, and King Crimson as they do Phish. If you've really checked it out and it isn't your thing, then your entitled to your opinion.

But, I doubt ANYONE on this board that has actually BEEN to a UM show will say they left anything less than blown away at the intensity. I've been to around 15 now and each time I got my face melted off.

Unfortunately, you can't really see bands like PJ and Radiohead in intimate venues anymore. You won't find a band that can make you rock, dance, and groove all over a ballroom sized venue like UM. It's a different kind of experience. Eddie knows all about it too. Early on (93-95) he was always raising hell about big venues and wanting to play the small clubs. Totally different dynamics.

Go see UM. You'll like them. Download a show for free from archive, first to make sure - I recommend you start with Feb 7, 2004 - it's a crispy soundboard and you get a spectacular note-for-note cover of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, plus some of the sickest guitar work you've ever heard in your life.

un-"sticky" this thread who cares about jammies or other superfluous awards. this is tour time...and a 1/3 of the entire front page lets important info slip through the cracks (ironic)

love you kat...but this joint needs a makeover
