Has anyone, in the history of the world, EVER said the US is the only country with those problems?
I feel for you guys – everyone’s always pickin on ya, and for absolutely no reason…

Ever heard the term ‘negative sales’? If you want to convince someone that something is worth buying…you’d do better to focus on what's good about it, not what's bad about the competition.

    I don't give a shit about "selling".

If this had happened in the US, there'd be 8 threads on it already.

    It's a sickening story.

I guess we are more ready to accept there are issues and try to redress them. The US seem less enclined to do so.

Also, these issues are nowhere near the ampleur of the ones in the US. Unfortunately, this thing in Italy (and other similar 'riots' in other European countries, is a sad reflection on how we treat refugees/migrants.

Yes, it is. Which is why I don’t think it’s appropriate to use it as a soapbox to complain about how maligned the US is around the world…your first post reads more smug and self-centred than outraged…this story has nothing to do with the US, yet it sounds like you’re sticking your tongue out and saying ‘see, we’re not so bad’, instead of addressing the story – in effect, trying to ‘sell’ the US.
There’d probably be 8 threads about this if the majority of the posters here resided in Italy.

One man was shot with an air gun and wounded. A demonstration followed. Some goons drove the demonstrators out of town. There's widespread suspicion that the mafia provoked this unrest.

Therefore, Italy has a race problem, an immigrant problem, and a gun problem?

    Righteo.
  • Sadly it is everywhere. But of the type you are referring to, very much in Europe. :(

It IS sickening... However, if this was an Italian board, I bet there would be more people talking about this. I would venture to guess the majority of the fans on this board are North American.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V

Oh, yep, that's all it is. You're right, you're always right. Shrug off anything that doesn't happen in the US or is caused by the US. Hypocrite.

Nothing hypocritical here at all. One man shot with an air gun doesn't excuse - or equate with - all the thousands of gun homicides that occur every year in the U.S. Sorry to pop your bubble.

Agreed. It certainly doesn't. Surprise, surprise we probably agree on gun control. Probably should have left that out as it diminished from the true issues at hand.

I guess my point of this thread is that despite what others seem to believe, shit stinks all across the globe. Everyone is dealing with some form of racism to different degrees, some better than others.

Racism is rampant in Russia and other Eastern European countries, and its a lot more overt than it is in North America. Likewise in China. To share a personal example, my father previously worked in there, as a staff hiring consultant (for lack of a better descriptor) with a post-secondary institution who was hiring foreigners to teach various subjects, including basic English. He found a good candidate from the UK, who happened to be of Nigerian extraction. My father's employers flat-out told him not to bother with this guy, explaining that a black instructor "was not what we are looking for". And apparently this was not an isolated incident. If some Americans adopt an air of superiority when it comes to social problems like racism, at least from time to time, maybe they can be excused. Much of the rest of the world still needs to concede that racism is even a problem.

True. I'd say Japan and Australia also have a high level of racism.

Pretty sure there is racism in every country in the world... although i dont think Italy had to wait until the fucking 1960s to allow black people to sit where they want on their buses.

oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.
