Has anyone, in the history of the world, EVER said the US is the only country with those problems?
I feel for you guys – everyone’s always pickin on ya, and for absolutely no reason…

Ever heard the term ‘negative sales’? If you want to convince someone that something is worth buying…you’d do better to focus on what's good about it, not what's bad about the competition.

    I don't give a shit about "selling".

If this had happened in the US, there'd be 8 threads on it already.

    It's a sickening story.

I guess we are more ready to accept there are issues and try to redress them. The US seem less enclined to do so.

Also, these issues are nowhere near the ampleur of the ones in the US. Unfortunately, this thing in Italy (and other similar 'riots' in other European countries, is a sad reflection on how we treat refugees/migrants.

Yes, it is. Which is why I don’t think it’s appropriate to use it as a soapbox to complain about how maligned the US is around the world…your first post reads more smug and self-centred than outraged…this story has nothing to do with the US, yet it sounds like you’re sticking your tongue out and saying ‘see, we’re not so bad’, instead of addressing the story – in effect, trying to ‘sell’ the US.
There’d probably be 8 threads about this if the majority of the posters here resided in Italy.

One man was shot with an air gun and wounded. A demonstration followed. Some goons drove the demonstrators out of town. There's widespread suspicion that the mafia provoked this unrest.

Therefore, Italy has a race problem, an immigrant problem, and a gun problem?

It IS sickening... However, if this was an Italian board, I bet there would be more people talking about this. I would venture to guess the majority of the fans on this board are North American.

Nothing hypocritical here at all. One man shot with an air gun doesn't excuse - or equate with - all the thousands of gun homicides that occur every year in the U.S. Sorry to pop your bubble.

Agreed. It certainly doesn't. Surprise, surprise we probably agree on gun control. Probably should have left that out as it diminished from the true issues at hand.

I guess my point of this thread is that despite what others seem to believe, shit stinks all across the globe. Everyone is dealing with some form of racism to different degrees, some better than others.

Racism is rampant in Russia and other Eastern European countries, and its a lot more overt than it is in North America. Likewise in China. To share a personal example, my father previously worked in there, as a staff hiring consultant (for lack of a better descriptor) with a post-secondary institution who was hiring foreigners to teach various subjects, including basic English. He found a good candidate from the UK, who happened to be of Nigerian extraction. My father's employers flat-out told him not to bother with this guy, explaining that a black instructor "was not what we are looking for". And apparently this was not an isolated incident. If some Americans adopt an air of superiority when it comes to social problems like racism, at least from time to time, maybe they can be excused. Much of the rest of the world still needs to concede that racism is even a problem.

True. I'd say Japan and Australia also have a high level of racism.

Come out to Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana and ask 10 people about Obama. What you won't hear is clear, concise political commentary. What you will hear is the word "nigger" from about half of them. Obama brought the N-word back to my neck of the woods. Of course, the dip shits here also believe that wolves attack people, despite the fact that it has never happened once in recorded history.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AChKAdp4i2M the uk police were found to be institutionally racist? hmm and they would report racist murders as sucide like a 'paki' found dead after his friends and family tried to report they were just attacked (i say tried because the police refused to do anything and told them to go home) or 2 black guys found hanged within 6 months of each other and the 1st one had nigger painted on his house and was told he was a 'dead nigger' and the 2nd after his nephew started asking questions when the police refused to investigate...

also, i wonder what the reaction would be in those countries if a black man was close to being pm?

Indeed ... I mean, enough people voted for a mixed race candidate in the U.S. to make it an honest-to-gosh reality. As much as racism still exists, one kinda has to concede that there's been a beneficial shift of some sort in the American fabric, if indeed such a thing has happened. Its easy to bash Americans for having a really sketchy history of racial policies; people like dunkman seem to take some sort of pleasure in doing so. The reality is that bad history can change (albeit slowly) into something more progressive ... If nothing else, there is now an overt anti-racism stance that permeates American culture. Not everyone is on board (and that goes for some blacks too!), but compared to the 1920s or 1930s? Racism has, in a way, been driven underground. Its become more covert, and this means that there is still work to do. Nevertheless, an overt stance against racism is a pretty good start. There are parts of the world where no one (or few) even questions prejudice based on group membership.

ehhhh... Irish isnt a race... it's a nationality... it was white people in scotland shouting abuse about white people from Ireland... it is as moronic as it sounds but it cant be racism if they are the same race!!

but i already said in my first post in this thread that all countries will have an element of racism, so pointing them out to me is kinda futile.. but the OP has made a thread in which one incident of Italian racism and provocation is some sort of rebuttal for the racism still very much prevalent in his own country.

True. Norman Finkelstein makes a good point about Germany when he says that "It's a real paradox that...it was Nazism and the defeat of Nazism, that finally knocked sense into that society. And post-war Germany, the Germany of today...the young people are by far and away the most morally serious, most intelligent of all the European countries".

This doesn't surprise me one bit.

My in-laws were born in Italy and my wife and I have been there a couple of times. My father-in-law told me a story the last time we were there about a guy from his hometown that killed his daughter's boyfriend because he was black. It's an unwritten rule in this town that you do not date black people, otherwise, there will be trouble.

Italians love Americans (go figure), but black people...yeah, not so much.

The Irish people (Irish: Muintir na hÉireann, na hÉireannaigh, na Gaedheil) are a Western European ethnic group who originate in Ireland, in north western Europe. Ireland has been populated for around 9,000 years (according to archaeological studies), with the Irish people's earliest ancestors recorded[8]

Geneticists Show That Irish Are A Race Apart
LONDON (Reuters) - Irish geneticists have used surnames and the male Y chromosome to reconstruct a one thousand year-old genetic map of Ireland that shows the Irish really are a race apart.

"When you look at this old genetic geography of Ireland what you find is that in the West (of the country) we are almost exclusively of one type of Y chromosome," Daniel Bradley told Reuters.

yes and then you ended it by implying the US was worse

and then in your 2nd reply 4 min later you outright said it was the most racist country in the west.

while i'm not trying to argue there wasn't a lot of racism and still is we at least elected a person who is 1/2 black as president, how many other countries in the west have done that? i guarantee you if some of the other countries in the west did there would be similar youtube videos calling that candidate similar names.

i doubt if 2 black men were found hanging 6 months apart, both related and 1 had racial slurs painted on his house and had his life threatened a few years ago in the US the police would just shrug and say both were suicides. what criteria are you using to judge the most racist country in the west?
