Great album....much better than Riot Act.380

Agreeing with pretty much everything you've said in this thread.....
Compared to the creative peaks they reached with No Code/Binaural/Riot Act I find Avocado so uninspiring......
Life Wasted sounds like a dull Last Exit, Gone is simply horrible and Comatose is simply 'meh'......
I too find it funny how many dismiss the albums best and more interesting tracks (Unemployable, Army Reserve and Come Back).....
I just hope the next album is more inspired.....they have O'Brien back in board so here's hoping.....'The more I studied religions the more I am convinced that man never worshipped anything but himself.' - Sir Richard Francis Burton0 -
MrSmith wrote:Some people won't be happy until Pearl Jam starts trying to sound like Radiohead. Pearl Jam is a classic inspired rock n roll band. Even No Code is classic inspired rock n roll, just from all different genres. and within their style, they are still more experimental than 99% of the bands out there. you dont need electronica and synthetic beats to be experimental.
they just need a good producer again ( i hope)
And i think Severed Hand is the best song they've made in over a decade, but thats just me. yeah maybe i've heard similar, but so what? I dont care if you think its cock rock.
No one's saying there's anything inherently wrong with Pearl Jam's style. This is just an uninspiring album. If I wanted them to sound like Radiohead I wouldn't have hung on for 16 years.. so that's just a ridiculous statement.
Jeez - just because you say you don't like one album around here you're considered an enemy of Pearl Jam/America.'We're learning songs for baby Jesus' birthday. His mum and dad were Merry and Joseph. He had a bed made of clay and the three kings bought him Gold, Frankenstein and Merv as presents.'

hm, I like it. Some damned good songs on that one... it was much better than Riot Act and Binaural (I like those too, but they are PJ's weakest in my opinion).
You have songs like Severed Hand, Army Reserve and Parachutes on it. Only bad thing about Avocado is the horrible Gone... "uughh" (can't stand that song).I don't want to be the fool that's behind me but I am...

Oh, how I wish PJ had named this album...and not put an avocado on the cover. People who call it avocado are lame. I wish everyone would stop referring to the album as avocado, although, I guess the band left little choice in the matter. I blame the band for this sad situation.0 -
Rhinocerous Surprise wrote:So what? Just cos Life Wasted and Severed Hand are straightforward rock songs doesn't make them bad. Sure, it'd be nice if Evacuation got a little more love, but I'm not above enjoying a dirty great rock song like Life Wasted either.
I laughed when I was on someone's myspacebook account and they didn't even mention that they liked PJ though there were alot of other bands listed.
Weird I tell you since they spend alot of time on here.
I guess I don't care what other's impressions of me are.
I love Pearl Jam, though I haven't listened to it in quite a while. Tho it comes on in the car and gym via live recordings.Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away0 -

I dont really like it either, but saying Pearl Jam needs to experiment more is just ridiculous. They couldnt be more experimental unless they started playing weird Icelandic Bjork/SigurRos music.
Avocado is still plenty experimental to me, maybe not compared to Riot Act. Its just doesnt sound very good.0 -
i think this album is perfect
PLAY IT EXTREMELY LOUD
or use headphones.0 -
its taken me over 8 years to realize No Code is my favorite album0

I'm not sure that i get all the hate for this album? Maybe it had to do with the band building up expectations for it before its release, but personally i prefer it to Binaural and Riot Act.
It may be more "straight ahead" than Riot Act, but i could never get over the filler on RA. There are some good tracks to be sure, but i prefer the consistency of PJ.
As for Binaural, certainly those sessions produced the best songs. Unfortunately many of them didn't make the album, and some of the songs on the album just sound poor compared to their live versions. With a few different decisions, this potentially could have been right up there with the truly great Pearl Jam albums, but instead, for me at least, is one of their weaker albums.Shows: Montreal 98, Barrie 98, Montreal 00, Montreal 03, Montreal 05, Ottawa 05, Toronto 06, Vancouver Night 1 08 (EV), Vancouver Night 2 08 (EV), MSG1 08, MSG2 08, Montreal Night 2 08 (EV), Toronto Night 1 08 (EV), Toronto 09, Hartford 11 (EV), Ottawa 11, Ottawa 16, Ottawa 22.0 -
I think any pearl jam album usually turns out to be 10 times better than any other album by any other band put out in the five years preceding it, however, I have probably listened to Avacado the least of any pearl jam album. maybe just because I was in the middle of finals my first year of grad school when it came out, don't know, but it hasn't had as much of an impact on me as some of the other albums. I don't think it's my least favorite though, I'm not sure where it rank for me.0

I honestly LOVE riot Act. it's one of my favorites. I get hell for that, but there is something about that album I just love. maybe it's because of the tour that followed it, but I think it's a great album. I think cropduster, ghost, you are, green disease, and get right are some of the most under-rated pearl jam songs ever.
binaural has never been a huge favorite of mine. I feel that was a weird time for the band, when they kind of were transitioning from a "current" band to an "old favorite amongst die hard fans" if you get what I'm saying.
hmm. I think I'll listen to riot act right now.0 -
How 'experimental' really is No Code? I think its experimental in the sense that it was a depature from previous albums, but compared to other albums by different bands, its pretty standard. Still amazing, but it's not exactly the universal musical milestone that some people seem to make it out to be.0

No Code is Pearl Jam's Pinkerton- if you're a "real" fan you're supposed to like it the best. But I'll just put it this way, I love the green album, and I love Ten, Yield, and Riot Act.0 -

Great album!!!
I think people compare every album that they put out to the previous ones.
As musician they are always trying something new which is what you want to do!!! If every album sounded like Ten and Vs people would complain about that too!!!!!!!!0 -
Avocado was and still is a great album.
I don't understand why people slag it so much. There are some really solid songs on there.
WWS was a strong single...It did really well on the radio, and is awesome live.
Life Wasted fucking rocks
Comatose fucking rocks
Army Reserve and Marker in the Sand are two of the coolest songs they've ever wrote.
Parachutes and Unemployable are great songs.
All in all, I think they did a very good job with this album. Pearl Jam is still making very exciting records. Avocado wasn't their best best album by a long shot...but we're going on 20 years into this bands carreer and they are still making quality albums...what more do you want?
