I think it is one of the more diverse albums they have put out in a while.

That would definitely be Riot Act, sorry.

Even though Avocado is not my favorite (that would be Vitalogy) I still feel its a really good album. I actually like all the songs on the album and love a couple too (severed hand, comatose, army reserve). But of course I'm hoping for something different for their next album- something we wouldnt expect.

Oh please thread starter. Comatose and Worldwide Suicide melt the faces off- off anything on NO Code and Yield. Smart people (like Rolling Stone jouirnalist David Fricke) disagree with your remarks. Life Wasted,WWS,Comatose,Big Wave,Severed and MITS were the freshest sounding garage punk batch of rocking songs since Vitalogy songs 1-8.

    Deal with it.

I'd call it a "fun" album. Fun songs that are good enough to enjoy listening to without being particularly deep or moving you.

you are out of your mind!

Army reserve and come back don't move you?

    check your pulse dude.
  • Again, agreed. It is a fun album, a good sunny day album. I've just never really seen Pearl Jam as a sunny day band. :o

    (jaw drops)

let's see WWS, unemployable, Gone, Army Reserve , LIFE WASTED!!

yeah, real breezy stuff. Might want to check the cd and make sure you didn't put a partridge family disc in there by mistake.

I have to agree with the guy who says it's a sunny day type of album. I thought the same thing on my first listen of it.

overall, I think it's a pretty good album. better than Riot Act if you ask me. Come Back, Unemployable, and Big Wave are pretty bad but the rest is okay.

With the exception of the current state of politics, they don't have much to be agressive about - rich, accomplished musicians who travel the world in style and have loving families to return home to.

I actually think they need to retire some songs, like Leash. Singing about teenage angst at this point in their lives is just silly.

They're still a rock band, y'know - Leash is not just a huge crowdpleaser, it's a fucking great rock song. No reason to retire it.

Each album has grown along with the band and it's my humble opinion that there aren't any holes in any albums. This is the most rock solid and unwaivering band and we all should feel lucky and proud to be part of this. I just hope that there will come another worth passing the torch to. Can't wait for June 30th in Mansfield. Like E.V. asked at the Gorge in '05 "where do you go when you leave?" I feel like I'm the only one out there blasting PJ in my car. Where are the rest of you? Great crowds at the shows but everyone seems to dissappear into the woodworks after that. Hope to hear you out there and see you at the shows. Love you all Jamily!!!

    hey, welcome to the board.

i stay outta debates about this album. i think its solid, and tied for my favorite album. i just cant see how a PJ fan could not like this album myself.
but hey, to each their own, and thats why i wont go into why this is one of their best efforts.

Unemployable, Big Wave, Parachutes, Inside Job

...are the only good songs...the rest is generic crap. Funny how most fans feel the total opposite.

    Riot Act is 100X better.

It's amazing how opinions differ. the songs you listed above (along with Come Back) are the ones I'd say are generic crap (Unemployable in particular), whereas I think the rest of the album is pretty good

I LOVE both riot act and avocado. i go back and forth from what i like more, but i generally prefer riot act.

life wasted, severed hand, marker in the sand, comatose = A+ rockers

inside job & army reserve= A+ artsy rock (which i prefer with pj, and RA is more artsy)

parachutes, gone, wasted reprise, come back = great emotional/uplifting tunes

unemployable, big wave, world wide suicide = ok average tracks (but much beter then generic crap .. it's pj, come on now)

as for riot act, even the rockers, besides save you, are creative and artsy. this i dig ALOT. the only riot act tune i can do without with is bu$hleaguer. but live, it kicks ass. so yea, i think riot act is better actually. riot act is brilliant. can't keep, all or none, cropsduster, ghost, you are ... can't beat that shit

but yea, both are fantastic. every pj album is amazing!

I'll have to chime in with my LOVE for the Avocado.

It is at least tied for my favorite with Yield and Vitalogy.

I know this is a boring post. I guess I felt compelled to "add my vote" :)

i personally like avocado but thats just me

people talk about it lacking agression - cmon now how many years has it been since the band showed true aggresion on record? Its been years . . . .thats not who they are anymore - at least they dont across that way on their past several records. It still shows on stage form time to time tho

How can people say that Unemployable is generic crap, and in the same breath say that Severed Hand is one of their best rockers? Unemployable is full of gorgeous melodies and guitar parts unlike anything else in the Pearl Jam catalog, while Severed Hand is the stupidest most generic riff ever written, not to mention that horrible middle 8 that brings the song to a screeching halt. What is wrong with you people?

LIFE WASTED- This song is just plain great. This song makes me get pumped up.

WWS- As soon as I heard this song, I liked it.

COMATOSE- This song is almost maniacal in it's brilliance.

SEVERED HAND- Actually, not one of my favorites on Avocado, but it's very good.

MITS- One of my favorite PJ songs now. It's just so damn catchy, and the lyrics are amazing!

PARACHUTES- Absolutely brilliant and beautiful song! This brings out loads of emotions in me.

UMEMPLOYABLE- Decent song, but not one of my favorites.

BIG WAVE- I didn't like this song at first, and now I love it.

GONE- I love Gone. The more I hear it, the more I like it. It grows on u.

    WASTED REPRISE- Nothing great here

ARMY RESERVE- Best song on Avocado, and one of their best of all time.

COME BACK- I wasn't crazy about this song at first, but I like it now, and really love the final part of the song

INSIDE JOB- This song is awesome. It builds and grows into something huge. It's a classic from Mike.

To sum up, Avocado is one of their best. I think it sounds like pure Pearl Jam, and has plenty of rage and energy, along with some absolutely gorgeous songs, like Parachutes.

  • I think some songs hold up better than others after two years, but I still think it's a really strong album. My favourites are Life Wasted, Marker, Parachutes, Unemployable, Come Back and Inside Job. I can't believe how many people don't like Unemployable...

I like this album, I do... But it has very little depth compared to the others; none of the aggression; it's mixed in a totally lacklustre, conservative way; Matt hardly ever rocks hard (WWS is a major exercise in boredom-drumming - closed hi hats all the way, COME ON MAN this isn't jazz).

Where is the intelligence in the songs, compared to songs like 'No Way' and 'Faithful' and 'Last Exit' and 'Grievance' and 'Long Road'.... you name it....

Sorry everyone. I wish I felt differently.

its no Ten, but its light years from Riot Act which truly sucked ass. I thought Avocado was one of their tightest albums since the early days. No experimental weirdness. Not TOO political. Good mix of energy. I still put Avocado right behind Ten and Vitalogy. I thought it excellent.

Good songs let down by piss poor production.....

To me this album isn't a patch on the genius they touched with No Code, Yield and Binaural.....

Unemployable and Big Wave are my favourite songs on Avacado.....

I find Life Wasted extremely dull and repetitive.....it's like a shit Last Exit.....

  • LIFE WASTED- Its a good start for the album. One of the better songs on the album. B-

WWS- I never liked this song. I can't get through the entire song. Once Eddie starts singing the song goes down hill. D-

COMATOSE- Eddies voice strains my ears. Lyrics are terrible. Another song I usuallly can't get through. The guitar riffs don't seem to piece together. D-

SEVERED HAND- Great song. IT has a great solo. A-

MITS- I changed my mind...Probaly the best song on the album with the exception of Come Back. Great lyrics...beautiful song. A-

PARACHUTES- Beautiful song however I can't stand the strumming of the guitar. It takes away from the greatness it couldve been. B- couldve been an A+

UMEMPLOYABLE-This is an average song...nothing great. I can listen to it but it doesn't spark any emotions. The singing of Oh, OH, OHHH sounds horrible. C+

BIG WAVE- Another song I can't listen to. I usually can't get through the whole song. Once the "Got me a big wave, got me a Ughhhhhh!..can't stand it. time for the next song D-

GONE- Not PJ's best but I can listen to it. Today I'll give it a C+

WASTED REPRISE- Not bad but what the hell is that in the background!...Is that Boom??? Usually when there is an annoying ringing in my ears its Boom. Sorry. D..couldve been an A.

ARMY RESERVE- This is another song that couldve been great but it seems fragmented. For me this seems to be the theme of the album. Some songs sound great for 40-50 seconds then it changes pace and something happens. C

COME BACK- I wasn't crazy about this song at first either, but it grew on me and finally I enjoy this song. This is a recent change...maybe from 2 weeks ago. This is the only song that competes with other albums. Best song on the album. A+

INSIDE JOB- A decent song...especially the beginning..specifically up until 4:22. Then I seem to lose interest. If I was grading the first 4 minutes it would be my favorite. C+

I continue to try and like this album but I struggle. I was generous with my grading scale above. I feel like I commited to saying this album is great but I can't. Most PJ albums for me are very memorable. With this one I feel like there wasn't even a new PJ album released due to the insignificance of it. It feels like there hasn't been a new album since Riot Act since Avocado is so difficult to get into. If this was PJ's 1st album I probally wouldnt be a fan...however I know the next one will make up for it.
