  • Haven't heard the DMB album...

I only know that once I rented their Central Park concert in DVD, and after 20 minutes of pain I ejected it and put Pearl Jam "Live at the Garden". Aaah, what a wonderful evening. :)

I saw DMB do practically the entire record live last summer and was not impressed. I did not buy it. PJ Backspacer is a very good record which has been in my cd player since I received it.
    ~!~ Peace ~!~ Love ~!~ Pearl Jam ~!~
  • everytime i hear a dave matthews band song, i think of people covered in their shit.

It's funny that you say that...in the early 90's I was the Exec. Sous Chef at the Whitney Hotel in Minneapolis and everyone stayed at the Whitney back then...including DMB...I have met Dave, spoken with him and all his managers/handlers and bandmates...a genuinely nice bunch of fellows...but Dave himself got so loaded that he shit in his room and wrote on the walls with it...and that is a fact...Dave likes his poop, Kurt Cobain threw red wine all over his room, Slash had strippers in the hallways, Jack Nicholson kicked Sean Penn as he laid passed out under our grand piano....but Dave was just inspired by shit.....

    so then....

    What Would You Say? ;)

  • Different strokes for differnt folks... musical taste, deviant behavior, whatever!

Anyway, i was in Boulder, CO from 92-96. DMB played CO quite often, and was able to see some amazing shows in Vail, Red Rocks, and the Fox Theater (I have an awesome poster of the 11/94 show). Good times, but I have sort of lost the passion...

That is the complete opposite direction of my interest in PJ. I have always been a fan but my interest has grown w/ the last 2 albums. I was very disappointed by Riot Act but the band has roped me back in! I have seen some great shows in the past few years, and caught the 3 of 4 Spectrum shows.

As far as I am concerned, it really is not close (PJ Rules), but I would never "hate" on anyone for any musical preference. DMB, Phish, U2, Springsteen, Jay-Z... Who cares. its about the love for music and the creative process!

On that note, pop music is trash!
    9.29.96, 8.28.98, 9.1.00, 7.5.03, 9.30.05, 6.1.06, 6.19.08, 6.20.08, 6.24.08, 10.27.09, 10.28.09, 10.30.09, 5.20.10, 9.3.11, 9.4.11, 9.2.12, 7.19.13...

    2013- Brooklyn2, Philly1, Philly2, NOLA

I agree completely, music is personal, but I'm just hating on the bad bands, not the people on the board :)

  • I really love DMB but I much prefer Backspacer to Big Whiskey.

I think the second half of Big Whiskey is much weaker than the first half, whereas Backspacer is absolute quality throughout.

  • I know fuck all about DMB... but saw them support Springsteen in Hyde park last summer... and they were fantastic... great build up to the boss :) I think they rock live.
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
    Verona??? it's all surmountable
Dublin 23.08.06 "The beauty of Ireland, right there!"
    Wembley? We all believe!
Copenhagen?? your light made us stars
    Chicago 07? And love
    What a different life
Had I not found this love with you
  • Pearl Jam is 10 times better than Dave Matthews Band, Backspacer is better than anything DMB has ever done.

Backspacer for me, but I do think Big Whiskey is a solid album.

I've really enjoyed both albums, but I've gotta give the nod to Backspacer.

I'd rather listen to Backspacer, but put into the context of the band's abilities, Big Whiskey.

Pearl Jam, in my opinion, put an album out on par with their last effort while DMB put out their best album in over a decade...

  • Band to band, live show to live show - PJ wins, no doubt. But I do honestly think that Big Whiskey is a better album than Backspacer.

  • DMB.. good..
    PJ.. incredible.

Backspacer hands, thumbs, toes, nose down.
  • DMB are sell outs. They tour every year and Dave takes a much larger cut than the rest of the band and when his new albums comes out his shows are 50% new material which sucks.

  • Big Whisky... great album, probably my favorite of theirs. I think a lot of the people who bash DMB stopped listening to them after Under The Table And Dreaming and think all they write is frat boy songs that sound like "Ants Marching" - they probably wouldn't recognize something like "Time Bomb" as being a DMB song. I wonder if the people on this board who bash DMB's early sound also hate people who judge PJ based on Ten...

I'll always be a bigger Pearl Jam fan than a DMB fan, but straight up I'll take Big Whisky over Backspacer - poo and all. For that matter, I like Black Gives Way To Blue more than Backspacer, despite William DuVall's lack of poo-related stories.
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

Hi, I'm Pearl Jam and I shop at Target. Perhaps you've heard my song "The Fixer" on a commercial for Target? Or while watching college football on ESPN (who also had contracts with AC/DC and DMB)?

Man, I hate those bands that tour every year and play a lot of their new music when they have an album to promote... I'm glad Pearl Jam never tours, and on the rare occasions that they do, they don't play much stuff from their new album...

thank you for responding. Also pearl jam used their music (yellow Ledbetter) for the series finale of FRIENDS and Used world wide suicide for CSI NY.
