Backspacer realistic review

I have a problem with this section. Just Breathe was influenced by ITW. It was NOT a leftover. Think about it.... how does the subject matter have ANYTHING to do with that movie? The whole assumption that this song "didn't make the cut" is flawed. I have seen it in reviews too. It is an asumption and not a fact.
The guitar portion of the song is similar to guaranteed. That is where the similarities end. This song has nothing to do with that movie and I think it is MILES and MILES better than guaranteed.0 -
I am the OP, and I have to say again that yous should come down off this BackSpacer High.
Someone said that they hated Riot Act and Binural, but they like this Ablum (Backspacer)???
That to me is obsurd. Binural is a great album and Riot Act is not too far behind.
Even Pearl Jam (self-titled ablum) is much better than Backspacer. Life-wasted and
Severed Hand alone make a better album than the new one.
The songs on BS are just flat-out boring. Here's a test:
Find someone who is not a die-hard PJ fan and try to get them to listen to the whole album.
They won't make it far. I'm a die-hard fan and I couldn't even finish it on my first try.
There is no way in Hell that this Album is even close to being their best, or even since No Code.
I actually was a bit embarrased and still am when I listen to a few songs.
As far as the "realistic" bashings I've recieved, I not saying that my review is the realistic one- I just
wanted to get a few opinions that weren't all " Wow this is the best album ever".
Still one of the best bands of all-time and can't wait for 10/30 in Philly!0 -

again, stating your OPINION as FACT is unecessary if you want a discussion, which it seemed you did. But finding people disagree is the point of a discussion. I don't think you can convince me that Got some and the fixer will be heard live for years to come, and that to me is the mark of a good album.
Instead of wishing some of us to come down off our highs, I wish that you could get on the same one I am on. I don't love the whole album, but I will say that there are songs that are great. But the beauty of life is that you get to voice your opinion and I get to hear it and respond with my own. I for one am glad there are people that don't like it, it is some how comforting to me to know that people out there use their own mind when figuring out if they like something. I know I do. I like the album for the songs, not because "it is teh newz pearl jamz!!!111!!11111!!!11" I am excited because it seems like they really enjoyed their time in the studio and this might mean not such a long break next time!that’s right! Its not their best and its not their worst. There are some gems and some pyrite. Still my all time favorite band and i believe they are incapable of putting out a bad record.0

It's true that some people have made sweeping and somewhat assinine statements about BS, but all I am saying, is that to be critical and honest about things one cares about is a true expression of love and commitment. I love PJ's music and the integrity they bring to everything they do, musically and philosophically. But, I do feel that BS is not one of their better works, doesn't mean I am questioning their character, work ethic or integrity....me pointing out slightofjeff as being intense, is because, well he kind of has been....I hold the pain, release me!0 -
Anything Ed's voice attempts is gold in my eyes. I've been a diehard fan for years and have had to endure not being able to listen to them in my friends company because I know how annoyed they get by it. Whats beautiful is now some of those friends are coming to me saying "man I've never been a fan of PJ but that new album is killer." I say well you've missed out on 8 other killer albums bud.
BS is pretty commercial but its still the same bones under a new skin. We should be happy they are reaching other people, now I dont have to be the only nutjob in my state who sees the genius in them.0 -

I guess I'll address this being that I was the one who referred to Riot Act and Binaural. I never once said that I hated them, only stated that I have openly criticized them both. I did so in response to the absurd notion that only fans, who eat up everything Pearl Jam serves them, are the ones that enjoy Backspacer. Get it? And if you love an album as much as you claim, at least learn to spell it correctly..
With your outrageous test suggestion you have successfully upended your own stupidity as we are all in agreement, whether a fan of Backspacer or not, that this record is extremely accessible. For your experiment, please find that same person you described and force them to listen to Help Help, Bushleaguer, Cropduster, and Ghost and see if said person doesn't punch you in the mouth..

GSMF: still great. Matt is on fire here. just a fun rocking song.
Got Some: the 'diplomatic resolve' bit is a tiny bit annoying, but this is a great song anyway. one of my favorites

Johnny Guitar: probably my favorite. Matt and Ed go well together here. fun story.
Just Breathe: great song. i love how the band compliments without ruining it. I love Ed's delivery, too.
Amongst the Waves: i can't help but compare it to older songs in the same vein, and this is severely lacking. just sounds generic. and the lyrics...how should i put this... are not what i like.
Unthought Known: I kinda go back and forth on this one. One day i like it, the next its just ok. its a well crafted song, though. i think i'll like this one when its all said and done.
Supersonic: not exactly a grower. its a good little dumb song.
Speed of Sound: Sounds like it was written for a bad play or 80s movie. Reminds me of Meatloaf. Ridiculous song. haha.
Force of Nature: hard to have an opinion on it. i really like the lyrics, but the music just kinda chugs along. i dont know.
The End: Lyrically its great. Ed's delivery is a bit less likeable here than in Just Breathe. its a nice little album closer.
all in all its a pretty good album. makes me excited for what comes next. i think the next album will be sweet.0 -

Yeah, but it's all in the ear of the beholder. You may not think BS is their best. I don't either. But hell, there are some people around here that think Riot Act is a masterpiece... I don't think they're necessarily being dishonest about it... maybe delusional and slightly deaf, but it doesn't mean they're not honest 0 -
this board is made up of equal parts tyrannical dictators expressing their opinions as fact and generally being haters, and namby pamby oversensitive ninnies that get their feelings hurt everytime someone says something sucks. :x :oops: :P
