I mean consider the following:
* Loads of press for 'Pearl Jam'
* VH1 Storytellers
* Music Videos
* A commercial, shiny sounding album, full of attempted anthemic rock music that we haven't really heard since Ten
* Appearing with U2 on the same stage

nope pj didn't sell out. If you think about it they did less press for it than any other artist does for any of their cd's. It just seems like a lot cuz it's pj, when they do anything press related it seems huge.Wouldn't it be funny if the world ended in 2010, with lots of fire?0 -
Pearl Jam Sell Out - that should be their next album name.
And no, they did not. Chris Cornell sold out. The distinction should really be clear at this point!!0 -

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.0 -

Sell out...that terminology is dead
Who the fuck cares
does that affect the sound of their music to you or something
I sell out everyday, going to work to a job that I really hate just because I need to make 70 G's in today's societyGod Loves Pearl Jam0 -
it's great to have the troll back even if they did sell out they are still the best band by miles ....jesus greets me looks just like me ....0

"Sell Out" ... "G's"....... pfft. If you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem bro...joking aside, you're spot on. its not a real term.
If PJ make videos like Do The Evolution again im all for them making them. That shit is awesome0 -

Yo Yo...I spend my G's on Bling and 50 Cent albums
I down with whatever they put out, the life wasted video was kind of shotty but that is their artistic perogative, DTE video was sick, wouldn't that be sweet, another collaboration with Todd McFarlane to go along with the Brenden O'Brien produced record....Sell out or not, I am down with it...God Loves Pearl Jam0 -
It's about time we start seeing more Pearl Jam stuff out there. Start spreading the word...helpin' people out man.0

I see your point. But You really can't get away with not doing any interviews, videos, or basic promotion these days. Pearl Jam's promotion of Self Titled was rather tame compared to about 90% of the active touring bands out there.
Attention spans are really low these days. Record sales are poor even for the biggest Pop Stars. Not many bands could move 10-20 million albums the way Pearl Jam did in the early-mid 90's;especially with the internet.
Pearl Jam had their work cut out for them. It's not 1993 anymore...Pearl Jam can't get away with being well...Pearl Jam.
The sad fact of the matter is, aside from Pearl Jam's large fan base...Music has moved on.
Pearl Jam are considered legendary...Considered a great Band...But the kids these days only really know of them through their older siblings or frightenly enough...Their Parents :( Kids have to work alot harder than they'd like to find great bands bands like Pearl Jam.
The band is up against some pretty shitty odds from here on out; especially since by mainstream music standards, Pearl Jam basically fell off the map somwhere around 1996.
In reality, Pearl Jam are not going to sell Millions and Millions of records anymore. They've got a big enough fanbase to sustain themselves...Tour Sucessfully...and continue to make the music they want to make. And if you really stop and think about that...It's a pretty good life for a band that is 18-20 years into their career...
As for selling out...I think this entails far worse horrifc, vile, and ulitmatly embarrasing promotion tactics other than appearing every so often on TV, or getting an unknown director from Brazil to direct your 1 and only music video that mostly know one including the most die hard fans really understood or even liked.
Just be thankful they're not up there "Dancing With The Stars".0 -

Exactly, who the fuck cares?
I guess I'm a sell out too because I'm at a job I hate right now as well....thats why I spend so much time on the pit!0 -

The world was not ready for PJ back then...
....what was counter culture then is main stream now...
Politics, Rotting Economy, Environmental Issues...these are the foremost things discussed today which are themes in many of PJ songs dating back from Ten to the present. Most people didn't want to hear of that stuff back in the early 90's, now that we have our heads out of our asses folks relate more and in turn want to see more of PJ.....Culture was at a different place 15 years ago, they were more interested in turning PJ into a boyband of sorts, causing PJ to withdrawal from the limelight, since then PJ has elevated their status above the superficial nonsense that plagues " pop culture " which offers many a reprieve from the shit out there. I am glad they are " selling out ", I wish I had access to their stuff back in the 90's more but I guess that is what made the band into what they are now...peaceGod Loves Pearl Jam0 -
I think they were just a lot more comfortable doing press because both they, and the world at large, have moved on since the early 90s. There wasn't a million angsty teens about to start worshipping Eddie anymore, so it allowed them to take a kind of "elder statesmen" role... the survivors of the 90s, showing they're still alive, still relevant, and still opinionated.Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0

Album sales mean dick these days.0 -
there obviously wasn't THAT much press, when i went to the tree planting 2 weeks ago all the people i talked to about pearl jam said "oh, they're still a band?" plus the purpose of them not doing music videos is so that they dont give people an impression to what the song is about. they didnt want people to see a music video and go "oh i thought it was about something else" and get all worked up about it. and i dont care what anyone says, i can't for the fucking life of me understand what that life wasted video was all about. let them do whatever they want, you nor anybody on this site know what pearl jam want and how they want to run their career. they weren't ready nor mature enough to accept fame but now they grew up. let them have fun with their fame, theyre not 25 year olds anymore.PJ: 9/29/04, 5/12/06, 5/13/06, 6/22/08, 6/24/08, 6/25/08, 6/27/08, 6/30/08, 10/30/09, 10/31/09, 5/18/10, 5/20/10, 5/21/10, 9/3/11, 9/4/11, 10/18/13, 8/7/16

I don't think they sold out, i believe Ed said that "there were willing to play the game.""He floated back down 'cause he wanted to share,
His key to the locks on the chains he saw everywhere" GTF

is this topic argument bait?
I would define "selling out" as PJ doing something they were morally opposed to just for money. And promoting their music doesn't qualify. Hiring Timabaland to slick up your CD "for the kids," putting your song in a commercial for a product you despise, or charging $350 for concert tickets AND getting a cut of all Stub Hub sales (Madonna is doing this right now) are things that I would qualify as shi**y moves to make just for money. VH1 Storytellers? No way, that was awesome and 100% genuine PJ.Sam0
